What's Your Love Story?

 

   I was praying the sorrowful mysteries this week with the Gospel of Mark. Just before Judas' betrayal, we hear the story of the woman who poured an alabaster jar of perfumed oil over Jesus' head. Jesus was deeply touched by this woman's love. But Mark tells us that many present didn't understand. They thought her generosity toward Jesus was a ridiculous waste of money. Jesus responded to their criticism with the following: "Amen, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed to the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her." (Mark 14:9)

  I sat with this for a while.  Our love for Jesus may not be understood by the world, but others' views shouldn't dictate how generously we love Him. When it comes to loving Jesus, don't hold back.  Give Him everything. One day, our stories will be told as well. Try to imagine Jesus telling others in heaven about your love for Him. I hope the story is as lavish as that of the woman with the alabaster jar.

It's Definitely Possible

 

  I've been planning an upcoming summer vacation in the mountains. I always check out the local Catholic churches and their Masses ahead of time.  I was shocked to discover that the churches were not that close and that there was only one Mass time.  It made me realize how fortunate I am.  In my hometown, I have at least seven churches within fifteen minutes of me, each offering multiple Masses. The Church may be flourishing where I live, but there is still much work to be done.

  As we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus into heaven, my thoughts turn to the apostles' faith. They were given a task that seemed almost impossible — to share the Gospel throughout the world. Without the help of the Holy Spirit, this task would have been impossible, but the gift of the Holy Spirit opens the heart to God in ways beyond our comprehension.  Everything is possible!

  Let's all continue spreading the Gospel. The Holy Spirit is as strong today as He was for the apostles. Let's spend the next week in prayer with Mary.  Let's pray that God opens our eyes to see who else needs to hear the Good News.  It's possible you may not even have to venture more than fifteen minutes from your home. You can do this! The Holy Spirit dwells in you.  Your faith can move mountains and people, too!

When Jesus Walks In

  

  I enjoy reading the Sunday Gospel to prepare for Mass. The Baptism of Jesus is one of my favorites!  I love all the imagery in this setting-the Spirit of God descending upon Jesus, the voice of God proclaiming His love for His Son, and Jesus blessing the waters of Baptism for all of us.  I have to admit, I also like the little interaction between John the Baptist and Jesus. John the Baptist is preaching and baptizing sinners. He fully understands his mission, and then... Jesus walks in. At first, John is reluctant to baptize Jesus. In John's eyes, this doesn't make sense, but Jesus reassures John to trust in God's Plan.

  How many times in my life have I had a similar conversation with Jesus?  "Jesus, is this really the Plan? I didn't see it going this way.  How is that supposed to work?  I don't really understand this." These questions rarely provide quick clarity. Instead, they often lead to more prayer, where I feel Jesus gently prompting my heart with the words, "Trust Me."

  As we pull out our new 2026 calendars to plan, remember that God also has plans for us. It might be wise to pray about these first.  It's okay to pencil in our own ideas, as long as we remember that some may need to be erased or adjusted by God's plan. It is through obedience and trust that the Spirit will come upon us and we will hear God's voice.

A Son Is Given To Us

 

 

 I hope everyone is having a wonderful Christmas!  I love that Christmas is a whole season and not just a single day. I really enjoy the days after Christmas. All the busy, running around town is over, and the Christmas peace, which is what I truly wanted for Christmas, finds me. As I gaze upon my manger, I am so grateful that I opened the door to Mary and Joseph again this year.  They came and placed the Christ Child into my home. My heart overflows with joy and love. With Elizabeth I ponder the incredible blessing, “ And how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me,” and share the Son of God with me?

 "For a child is born to us, a son given to us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful..." (Isaiah 9: 5-6). I hope you all continue to enjoy the blessings of this Christmas.

You Can Bank On It

 

  My kids and I were sitting around the kitchen snack bar when a bank commercial came on TV. The bank's name started with the letters "JE" and ended with an "S". My son laughed and said, "Oh, I thought that said Jesus Bank." 

  We all laughed at his comment, and I replied, "I'm glad you see Jesus in everything!" Then I started thinking...what would a Jesus bank be like?  That sounds like the kind of bank I would want to belong to

  I imagine that a Jesus bank would have vast deposits of faith. This family bank has existed for thousands of centuries and is known for its loyalty. Built on the cornerstone of love, you can trust every promise made to you. Everyone's saving grace accounts would be freely given and yield a high return. Bonuses are often awarded for good works and acts of charity.  A checking account of actual grace is linked to the savings grace account for those daily situations when extra help is needed.  This bank becomes personally invested in everything you do, and its doors are open to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  No matter what stage of life you're at, the Jesus Bank is committed to being there for you always. 

  Would I bank at this bank?  Absolutely! I would bank on Jesus every day of my life, and every day in eternity!

No Fear Lives Here

 

  It's that time of year when haunted houses pop up everywhere. Sometimes it's the neighbor a few houses down, and sometimes it's a paid attraction. I have little interest in adding fear and anxiety to my life. I would much rather walk into a house where the peace of Christ surrounds me.

  Imagine living in a world that doesn't want to increase our fears but instead takes them away. Imagine a world where people turn to God and trust His wisdom and love. Imagine a world where Jesus, Mary, and the saints walk among us and guide our steps. Imagine a world where everyone gathers in prayer, and your faith grows because of your neighbor's prayer. Imagine a world where the Gospel is not just a story in a book, but the driving force behind all your decisions. 

  This is the world I want in to live in.  It sounds heavenly, and it is entirely possible.  Jesus gives us His divine life and soul in every Eucharist we receive.  Jesus said, "I came that they may have life and have it more abundantly." Jesus came to establish God's Kingdom here on Earth. There is no lock on the door to the Kingdom.  Jesus has flung the gates wide open. Don't let any fears hold you back.  Why celebrate your love of fear when you can celebrate the love of Christ?

What Path Are You On?

   

  Many years ago, when Maps was a new app on my phone, my family and I had a funny experience. Our vacation was over, and we were heading to the airport. My son entered the airport information. As we drove down the expressway, I saw signs for the airport. "Should I get off here?" I asked my son.

  "No.  Just keep following maps.  It always finds the quickest route."  

  We drove for several more miles following the directions from "Maps." After taking a few more turns down what looked like a back road, the voice announced, "You have arrived. Your destination is on the left. Be prepared to walk two minutes." Stunned, we all looked to our left. Behind a very tall fence were the airport runways. We were close to the airport, but definitely not in the right place. What were we supposed to do? Abandon the car, climb over the fence, and run across the runways?! We can laugh about it now, but it was incredibly frustrating at the time. Circling back definitely put us on a time crunch.

  I share this story because I want everyone to check their path this week. Today's world offers many popular options.  Some paths will definitely lead you away from God.  Some will get you close.  But are you on the path that will get you inside the gates? Double-check the voice of scripture and listen to His guidance. God has a very beautiful, intentional path designed just for you.  Make sure the voice you are hearing is His. And don't short-change yourself on time; be sure you have plenty of time to correct for mistakes. 

 So let's double-check our position and direct our hearts toward heaven. God wants everyone to make it back home. In fact, He's waiting for us with open arms.

Keep Striving

 

  I have a running game with the children I teach at the church. I bring to mind a previous Gospel story we discussed, share four statements about it, and ask them which one is correct. I make the game easy for them, so everyone will win a prize.  Last week, however, I was surprised by how many children answered the question incorrectly.  I thought the answer was very obvious.  While preparing for this week, I decided to quiz one of my sons with my question.  Again, I believed the answer was clear.  He said," Well, I think number two is the correct answer. 'If we want to be followers of Jesus, we need to make God our number one priority',  but I don't think number four is wrong."

  I look at the fourth statement.  It read, "There is nothing hard about being a follower of Jesus.  It's super easy." My eyebrows and voice raised at the same time. "You think being a Christian is easy? Really?  I certainly don't."

  "Yes, it is, " he answered.

  "So you have no problem with the ten commandments, forgiving others,  praying for your enemies, or being kind to those who mistreat you? What about always being honest? How's that going for you? Or proclaiming the Gospel to others?"

  My son started laughing. "Ok, I see your point."

  This week, ask yourself, "Which of Jesus' teachings do you find most difficult?"  Spend some time in prayer with the Holy Spirit discussing it.  For most of us, following Jesus is challenging.  It's challenging but not impossible.  The Holy Spirit will give us the necessary graces, but we must do the work and stay committed.

  Now that I have given this question more thought, I have decided to change the fourth statement.  Now it will read, "Following Jesus is impossible, and no one can do it."  That statement should be clearly wrong to all my students, and with the Holy Spirit's help, I will pray that anyone who has walked away from the faith will realize this as well. There is a prize to be won, and Jesus wants everyone to obtain it.

Oh, His Light!

  

 My sister and I went on a girls' trip to Antelope Canyon in Arizona earlier this year. We were lucky enough to take three different tours of the canyons: one by boat and two separate hikes. The canyons were breathtaking and mesmerizing.  Depending on the sunlight filtering through, the canyons looked completely different.  You could stand in one spot and turn 360 degrees, watching the color intensity shift before your eyes. I took picture after picture trying to capture their beauty, but I fell short of doing it justice.

  Faith can be like that, too. Feeling God's love is incredible! Then God reveals a little more, and you are even more amazed. As you turn to focus on His mercy, you can't even fully grasp it! As you try to share this experience and describe God's love to someone else, your words fall short because you can't truly capture how He has touched your life and changed your heart. His beauty can't be contained in just one conversation or thousands of books. His Light transforms everything! God is the adventure of a lifetime, and we are all lucky enough to experience it!

Listen Carefully

 

  Last week, I was shopping for a new rocking recliner. With the arrival of another beautiful grandchild, I thought it would be a good idea. I found the perfect chair until I looked at the price tag. I guess it had been a while since I bought my last rocking recliner, and needless to say, prices have increased. I remember the saleswoman telling me there were additional chairs on the other side of the store. I wondered if they would be more affordable. Disappointed, I strolled over to the other side. I told myself it would take an unexpected windfall to afford a new chair. 

  As I went to try another chair, I saw something interesting sticking out of the side of the cushion.  It was a wallet with an outside money clip filled with money! I laughed, thinking, "Wow, my wishes usually don't come true like this."  I immediately turned in the wallet, knowing the owner would soon panic over its disappearance.

  When I returned home and told my daughter the story, she laughed and said, "You know, Mom, if it wasn't for your morals, you would be sitting in a new chair."

  "I'd rather have my morals."

  "What if that was God's way of helping you?' my daughter teased.

  "I don't think that's the way God works.  But that is how someone else works, and I don't like being trapped in his lies."

  I share this story because we live in a world filled with many voices, opinions, and versions of the truth.  There is, however, one Truth.  Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)  Consider how valuable the Truth is.  It is the path that leads to the Father.  Avoid any shortcuts or alternate routes.  Know the voice you are listening to and stay on the path leading to Eternity.

The Harvest

  

  One of the many wonderful things to look forward to at the end of August is all the delicious farm-grown vegetables. Dinner sides and salads often rival the main course. I love a tasty harvest! My shade-covered yard doesn't get enough sun for my vegetable garden, so I rely on farmers' markets and roadside stands, but that doesn't mean I haven't been planting seeds. The seeds I plant are often slow-growing and bloom elsewhere. It is a garden not for myself, but for the Lord.

  We can all sow seeds of faith, hope, and love regardless of our occupation, location, or lifestyle. The Lord has blessed us with these seeds, and He only asks that we accept what we are given and share it with others. It's such a simple concept. And during those seasons when the sun isn't shining in our yards, we can benefit from those whose harvest is plentiful.

  This week, look deep inside yourself. Today might not be the right time for you to harvest. It could be time to plant new seeds or nurture what you've already grown. God doesn't require any green thumbs, only a heart full of love.

Speak His Name

 

 Those who know me know I am a big fan of Diet Coke. It's my "go-to" drink. Diet Coke's recent marketing campaign has added different nicknames on the cans, like Bro, Sis, Friend, etc., to make you feel personally connected. This morning, the Holy Spirit woke me with this idea: What names best describe God to you?

  Depending on the day, what I'm going through, or whom I’m speaking to, I refer to God differently. Sometimes I call Him Daddy, My Shepherd, the Almighty, My Savior, My King, The Creator, My Lord and Savior, etc. Each name reveals a different attribute of God that draws me closer to Him as I pray.

  It's a shame God doesn't have a large marketing team to help people feel connected to Him. Or does He? Yes, He most certainly does! It's you and me, and we have an important job to do! Go out into the world and speak God's name! Whatever name you feel best reveals God's truth, share it with others. Let others know that God is familiar to you. Let others know that you daily feast on His goodness!

  A few days ago, I turned on the morning news while drinking my coffee. After finishing my coffee, I went about my day, addressing various tasks. I had forgotten to shut the TV off, and I happened to walk into the room an hour or so later. A different talk show was on, and the guest was encouraging everyone to ask for signs from the universe to help manage their life. Signs from the universe, what is she talking about?

  I didn’t know if she thought stars and planets cared about her problems and could help her, or if she was just trying to discuss God without actually mentioning His name.  Either way, I was annoyed, so I shut the television off.   I wondered why it is so difficult for people to say, “I believe in God, the Creator? I believe that God cares deeply for me.  I pray to God because I know He is listening to me, and I am listening to Him as well." Our love for God should not be kept a secret. 

 This week, I would like us to all be bold. Each day, find a way to let others know how grateful you are for God’s love. Find ways to express gratitude or praise to God in your daily conversations with others. Don’t leave people wondering if God is essential to you; leave them knowing that God is everything to you!

New Release in Ten Days!

 

  Check out the new season of Lent 2025, which launches in ten days! Be sure not to miss it! There has been quite a bit of buzz about what to expect. The Creator says this season will definitely be different from last season and promises some big rewards to all participants. As in seasons past, this year will again be 40 days. However, everyone is expected to do a complete overhaul of past mistakes.  Everyone will get multiple passes to try again.

  The goal this season is not to let the enemy get between you and God's Will. The path will definitely have new and unseen challenges and surprises. And don't worry; some of the fan favorites will definitely be returning, but hopefully, they will do so with an added layer of zeal.  These favorites include Adoration, Reconciliation, Stations of the Cross, Rosaries, fasting, almsgiving, and service, to name just a few.

  For those who have not participated in the past, here are some insider tips for succeeding.  Call on the Holy Spirit to direct your steps, never miss an opportunity to receive Holy Communion, and praise God wherever you go!  Don't forget to use the intercessory prayers of Mary and all the saints.  They are the perfect go-to if you are confused.  Also, remember that calling on friends and family who are participating can help you stay strong.

  This season promises to be a real game-changer.  Many will obtain holiness.  You could be one of them!  But you can't do it watching someone else.  This new season is all about the decisions and opportunities you create.  Make Lent 2025 part of your legacy.

Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas! (It's Not Over Yet)

 

 

 I hope you all had a wonder-filled Christmas and continue to stand in awe in front of the manger. In the past, I have heard coworkers remark that they took down all their Christmas decorations on December 26th, exclaiming that Christmas was over. But it's not.  Christmas is a season. Could one day be enough to marvel and thank God for the birth of Jesus?  Could one lifetime be enough to thank God for loving us so much?

  I don't think so. Continue to dive into the rich mysteries surrounding Christ's birth. The birth of a child is only the beginning; it's not the end.  Keep growing in Christ's love.  Sit next to Mary and let the face of Jesus melt your heart.  Stand next to Joseph and learn how to protect the love of God from being destroyed by the world.

  Although the world may view December 25th as a singular day, I believe it was the day that changed the world forever. This is only the beginning!

Keep Your Focus On Jesus

 

    I love reading about the saints!  Their unwavering focus on Jesus is something I strive to emulate. I often find myself lost in thoughts about what it might be like to have a mystical vision of Jesus. If the Lord stood before me today, would I look away even for one second?  I imagined at that moment that I would be so overwhelmed with love that nothing could distract me. It would be the most glorious moment of my life!  

  Ironically, my closest experiences of Jesus standing before me occurred during Mass with my eyes closed. My eyes aren’t closed because  I’m trying to look holy. My eyes are closed because I am not holy. My eyes can’t perceive how close Jesus is to me. My eyes see what is in front of me. The person who walked into Mass late, the person texting on their phone, the time on my watch, etc. With my eyes closed, I can feel His Presence and hear His whispers, and my heart longs for heaven. I have found that my eyes see Jesus best when they allow my heart to see the vision. 

   This week, I encourage you to find your own unique ways to keep your focus on Jesus. Whether through prayer, meditation, or simply reflecting on His teachings, see what works best for you and embrace it.

Honestly Does It Really Matter?

 

  My dog began hitting the front window and barking loudly. He ran back and forth, obviously upset about something. I got up to look, but my daughter said, "It's just a squirrel, Mom."

    I looked at my dog and said, "Fitz, I'm sorry, but I just can't get excited or recognize the threat of a little squirrel." As I returned to folding the laundry, I wondered what other little threats I did not take seriously. Almost instantly, one word came to mind--truth. I've been thinking about truth and honesty lately.

  We live in a time where bending the truth and spinning our own truths are so common that it seems the laws of physics have changed. What happens to society when truth becomes arbitrary? Jesus discovered firsthand that a mob mentality can influence grave injustice when people stop listening to the truth. Jesus said, "For this, I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.  Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

  This week, let's pray to hear God's voice. If we can't hear anything, ask God to clarify any truths that have our heads spinning. The world is good at shouting words, but as disciples of Jesus, we need to value honesty. God is still speaking to us daily, and we need to hear His words of everlasting life. Small lies may seem like a small threat until you find yourself echoing Pilate's question, "What is truth?"

Making a Claim

 

 I was speaking with my insurance guy recently. "So, how much is everything going up this year?"  I asked.  The man spent fifteen minutes detailing cost-cutting savings that I could take now but would increase my deductible should I have to make a claim.  The different possibilities made my head spin.  "Could you send me an email with this information?  I need to see it in black and white."

  "Of course," he replied.

  "You know, I'm afraid of what would even happen to my rates if I had to make a claim.  I pay a lot for insurance that I hope I never have to use."

  The man sighed and said, "You are looking at this the wrong way.  You need insurance to live.  You can't drive your car or secure any loans without insurance." As he continued to deliver his spiel, I had to admit he was a good salesperson.  He could talk the talk.

  Later that evening, while praying, his words came to mind.  "You're looking at this the wrong way."  Am I practicing my faith because I want to be "insured" that I have eternal life with God, or do I really believe the words of the Gospel—Is the Christian life a better way to live?  I tried to look at this question very honestly.  Am I just checking off boxes so I can obtain the promise of heaven?  There is definitely some truth to that.  I really do want to live in Eternity with the Holy Trinity, the Virgin Mary, and all the angels and saints. And although heaven is my goal, following the Commandments makes so much sense.  How different would our world be if everyone followed the Commandments?

  So, do I need the assurance that God is beside me daily and will guide me along the path?  I sure do! But I also need Him every day of my life. I love his friendship and love. I also love His circle of friends who inspire and teach me to be holy. The best part of Christianity is that I don't have to be afraid to make a claim. In fact, the more I claim to be a Christian, the more I am rewarded!

I Care

 

  I wanted to catch up on some much-needed landscaping work this weekend.  Nothing crazy, just trimming trees, pulling weeds, and laying down mulch. Halfway through the project, I realized I would need more mulch.  My son and I jumped into the car to buy some more.  We hit up the landscaping store and then another retail store.  After the second store, I entered the car and glanced down at my knees.  "Oh my gosh," I exclaimed. "Why didn't you tell me my knees were all stained from laying down the mulch?"

  My son said, "Don't worry about it, Mom.  No one's going to notice or care."

  "You don't think anyone in the last two stores wondered why my knees were stained?  I could have easily washed it off."  A few minutes later, I started another conversation with my son.  "So, how many of your friends go to church?"

  My son gave me a face,  "None of them.  Nobody cares about church."

  "Seriously, that's so sad."  Later in the day, I couldn't help but recall these two conversations. I kept hearing the words "Nobody cares" in my thoughts.

  I want to announce to everyone that I care and invite anyone who has been away from the Mass to come back. I care about your relationship with Jesus. It must be so challenging to live life without Him. There is nothing complicated about coming back.  God welcomes you with open arms. As just as a bit of soap and water washed my stains, God can also cleanse you.  He's just waiting to shower you with His graces. So come on back home. God has a beautiful fountain of Mercy that He can't wait to share with you!
