A Son Is Given To Us

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Christmas!  I love that Christmas is a whole season and not just a single day. I really enjoy the days after Christmas. All the busy, running around town is over, and the Christmas peace, which is what I truly wanted for Christmas, finds me. As I gaze upon my manger, I am so grateful that I opened the door to Mary and Joseph again this year.  They came and placed the Christ Child into my home. My heart overflows with joy and love. With Elizabeth I ponder the incredible blessing, “ And how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me,” and share the Son of God with me?

"For a child is born to us, a son given to us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful..." (Isaiah 9: 5-6). I hope you all continue to enjoy the blessings of this Christmas.

The Letter Exchange (6): Christ Is Born!

(This Advent, we will prepare for the coming of the Christ Child through a series of fictional letters filled with hope, trust, and endless possibilities.)

Dear Elizabeth,

My heart is bursting with joy! Dear cousin, the wait is finally over! The Messiah has been born! Rejoice in the goodness of the Lord! Sing praises to the Almighty! Jesus was born here in Bethlehem just as the prophet Micah predicted. My son Jesus is here! I can't wait for you, Zachariah, and John to meet him.  He is so beautiful. I wish to share with you the details of his birth.

My labor began as we entered Bethlehem. Joseph was confident we would easily find a place to stay, but that was not the case.  The city was overcrowded because of the census. No one could make room for us until someone finally offered us the space where they kept the animals.  Joseph was beside himself, thinking his wife would have to give birth to the Messiah in a stable.  He wanted to keep looking, but  I told him we were out of time. I assured Joseph that this must be a part of God's Plan.

We tried to tidy things up as best as we could, considering my condition. It was not anyone's ideal situation, but the Lord chose to enter into the poverty of this world so He could fill it with good things. As I lay on the stable's floor, I could hear angels singing outside. The light of a bright star hovered over the stable, dispelling the darkness. God's love filled the room as my son left my womb and took his first breath. I placed him on my chest and held him close to keep him warm. Joseph wrapped his arms around both of us, and we wept tears of joy. I will never forget that moment. After some time had passed, I swaddled him in the clothes I had prepared and placed him in a manger.  Joseph and I knelt beside him, adoring the miracle before us, and then joined the angels singing songs of praise.

I'm not sure how long this adoration of the Lord had lasted when the shepherds appeared, asking to see the Savior.  They, too, had heard the angels singing and were told to search for him. I shared my son with them and watched their hearts and lives transform before me. Deep inside, I realized this is God's plan for me—not only to give birth to the Messiah but to share Him with everyone. When you gently place the beating heart of Jesus in someone's arms, they can never be the same. His love changes them. Their eyes open, and their ears become eager to hear God's voice. Let all who want to encounter the Lord come to me, and I will place Him in their lives forever!

Emmanuel is here! "Shout joyfully to the Lord, all you lands, serve the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful song.  Know that the Lord is God, he made us, we belong to him, we are his people, the flock he shepherds.  Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his courts with praise.  Give thanks to him, bless his name, good indeed is the Lord, his mercy endures forever, his faithfulness lasts through every generation."

Love your cousin,

Mary

The Letter Exchange (5)

(This Advent, we will prepare for the coming of the Christ Child through a series of fictional letters filled with hope, trust, and endless possibilities.)

Zachariah

I write to you in haste. We have just received news about the Roman census.  We will be leaving soon for Bethlehem. The thought of this trip worries me greatly. It is such a long journey, and the baby is nearly due. I worry that this trip could put Mary in danger. The thought of Mary going into labor on the side of the road fills me with such anguish. How can I keep both of them safe? I have never delivered a child before.

I truly appreciated your words of encouragement. They resonate deeply.  I, too, will lift my eyes towards the mountain and know that the Lord will protect us. Though I feel most unworthy of this role, I will place all my trust in the Lord. He understands my weaknesses and can be my strength.

Zachariah, I will pray for your family, and I ask that you pray for mine. The plans of the Lord have not been revealed to others. I am grateful to share my thoughts and fears with you.  I have so many questions and concerns. How could I possibly be a father to the Messiah?  Mary gently reminds me that the Lord is our shepherd and will lead us; we simply need to follow.

I am so blessed to have Mary as my wife. She has taught me so much about prayer.  I do my best to imitate her complete trust in the Lord. All my fears fade away when I see her pray.  There is a light that emanates from her that I cannot really describe or understand.  Peace fills the room, and I am moved to fall on my knees and pray alongside her.

I must finish preparing now.  I'm sorry my thoughts have been so scattered. We will send word when we have returned to Nazareth. Please pray for us. You know how dangerous these trips can be.  I just keep praying, “Keep us safe, O God, in you I take refuge. “

The Letter Exchange (4)

(This Advent, we will prepare for the coming of the Christ Child through a series of fictional letters filled with hope, trust, and endless possibilities.)

Shalom Joseph!

I wish to extend my blessings to you and Mary.  Now that I have recovered the ability to speak, I desperately want to talk with you. I hope circumstances will allow that to be soon.  I'm sure Mary has told you that an angel of the Lord came to me while I was at the altar of the temple.  Though the angel delivered incredible news, I doubted in my heart that it was possible. I have vowed to spend the rest of my life proclaiming His great love and mercy.

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for He keeps all His promises! Mary has told us that an angel of the Lord came to you in a dream and revealed His mighty plans! You and Mary will be the parents of the Most High, and my John will be the prophet to announce his coming! Like me, you must be overwhelmed with joy! I praise the Lord each day for His goodness, but I also feel the heaviness of this responsibility.  I wonder if you feel this as well? Protecting the Messiah and his holy mother may demand a great deal of you. For their sake and ours, you must stay strong in faith and in all your actions.

I have not been given any instructions, but I trust the Lord will provide me with what is necessary. Joseph, we must place all our trust in the Almighty. Let us fervently pray to the Lord for guidance and wisdom.  "I raise my eyes towards the mountains. From whence shall come my help?  My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.  He will not allow your foot to slip, or your guardian to sleep."

I am offering you my support and service. I have prayed my whole life for this moment to arrive.  I eagerly await the birth of the Messiah and look forward to serving Him with all my heart. Joseph, you will soon hold the Messiah in your arms, and as you do, whisper John's name into His ear.  Ask him to give John all the blessings necessary to accomplish the Lord's plans. Pray that my son will boldly proclaim God's words. Pray that he, too, is given the strength to battle the evil he may encounter and to have a heart loyal to the will of the Almighty.  I am an old man, and I may never see the good works he will perform, so I beg you to pray that John will be pleasing to the Lord.

Joseph, my family, and I live to serve the Lord. I am filled with happiness knowing that I will soon see the face of my Messiah! Let me know what assistance your most holy family may need.

Respectfully,

Zachariah

The Letter Exchange (3)

(This Advent, we will prepare for the coming of the Christ Child through a series of fictional letters filled with hope, trust, and endless possibilities.)

My Dear Children,

Thank you for sharing this special day with me. It brings me such joy to celebrate the incredible grace God has given me. The Almighty has been preparing me for my mission since the moment of my conception. Mighty are the Plans of God! "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways-oracle of the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, my thoughts higher than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:8-9).

God has also given each of you special graces to fulfill your mission. We are called to bring Christ to every person on this earth. My Son wants everyone to know and feel His love.  My dear little ones, you have been blessed in many wonderful ways. Be faithful to the Lord.  Do not take any of His blessings for granted. Today, as we gather around the altar, let us pray that the Father's Will be accomplished in each of our lives.

Your loving Mother,

Mary

The Letter Exchange (2)

(This Advent, we will prepare for the coming of the Christ Child through a series of fictional letters filled with hope, trust, and endless possibilities.)

 Most Blessed Mary,

I hope your journey back to Nazareth was not too difficult. Every day, I thank the Almighty for blessing us with your visit.  I am overwhelmed with joy that the Mother of my Lord would come to my side in my time of need. Your visit deeply touched each of us. The day I heard your greeting has changed me forever. Before that day, I just breathed the air around me, and now I breathe in the Lord's Spirit. The long-awaited Messiah is nearly here! Nothing will ever be the same for me.

My John grows more beautiful each day. As Zachariah and I hold him in our arms, we try to imagine the mighty words he will speak. We wonder how he will prepare the world for the Messiah! It is almost too much to understand, and it is this holy fear that leads us to pray more deeply each day. Zachariah and I recite the psalms with greater fervor, both for ourselves and for John. We know the Lord himself will give him the words to speak, but we feel a strong obligation to do our part as well. Please pray that we do not fail in this task.

Please let me know how I can assist you. I imagine you are becoming more radiant with each passing day. I am not bold enough to interfere with the Lord's plans, but if He desires, I will place myself before you. I will do all that you command me to do. You humbly served me, who is most undeserving; please allow me to serve you as well.  I miss our moments of prayer we shared.  You have taught my heart to love the Lord in ways beyond my own understanding. My own heart yearns to be present for the birth of your son, My Messiah.

You and Joseph are in our prayers every day. Has the Almighty revealed His plan to Joseph yet? Joseph is a good and faithful man. He is obedient to God and not the opinion of men.  He will make an excellent father. "Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, the Lord will be their trust."

I look forward to all of us being together again!

May God's peace shine through you,

Elizabeth

The Letter Exchange

(This Advent, we will prepare for the coming of the Christ Child through a series of fictional letters filled with hope, trust, and endless possibilities.)

My Dearest Elizabeth,

I know I have frightened you today.  I am mute because of my own disbelief.  In my heart, I doubted God's goodness. He has prepared something wonderful for our future, and in a moment of weakness, I faltered. Do not worry, though, and keep your faith steady and joyful. Today, the Angel Gabriel appeared on the right side of the altar as I burned the incense!

Elizabeth, I have never experienced an angel of the Lord appearing before me. I was overwhelmed with fear and awe. He came to deliver a special message to us. The angel Gabriel said, "Do not be afraid, Zachariah,  for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John.  And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth; for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb."

Elizabeth, you will bear me a son! Let us put aside our thoughts about our age and instead rejoice in the Lord's mercy and kindness!  We will be parents, and our son will do mighty deeds for the Lord!  Gabriel said, "He will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah." My dearest wife, our son will be a great prophet who will prepare the people for the Lord! Our son will prepare the way for the Messiah!

My heart is overflowing with happiness! Though you will not hear the sound of my voice for now, let us unite our hearts in prayer. We must not delay; we must prepare immediately.  Let us dedicate ourselves entirely to His plan of salvation.  Let us render our hearts to the Lord,  "for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy." The day of the Lord is coming; let us be well prepared.  Let us pray that the Lord guides us with His gentle love.

Forever yours,

Zachariah

FEEL THE JOY!

My four-year-old granddaughter picked up my phone and started taking pictures of everything in my house. Then she switched to videos. I saw her filming my picture of Jesus, so I asked her, "What can you tell me about Jesus?" She paused for a moment. "Who was Jesus' mother?" I asked.

  "Mary!" she responded quickly.

"Very good!  What else do you know about Jesus?"

"He is kind and joyful, and He loves me very much!" my granddaughter answered.

I smiled and said, "Yes, He does!" I really loved her answer. Jesus is kind and joyful! I have to admit, I’ve never heard her use the word joyful before, and I love that she sees Jesus this way. Often, Jesus is portrayed more seriously. In fact, Jesus wasn’t even smiling in the picture she was filming.

I thought about this again later that day.  I wondered if someone had asked me the same question: would 'joyful' even make my top 20?  Probably not, but honestly, it should. When Jesus told the Parable of the Lost Sheep, He revealed that there is "more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance." Jesus tells us that he will put that lost sheep on His shoulders with great joy and call His friends and neighbors to rejoice with Him!

This week, I hope you will join me in imagining Jesus smiling and full of joy. I plan to focus more on smiling as well. And why not? I have a Savior who is kind and joyful and loves me very much. Jesus also said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." I feel very fortunate to have such a wise granddaughter who is willing to share her wisdom and faith with her grandma.

You Can Bank On It

My kids and I were sitting around the kitchen snack bar when a bank commercial came on TV. The bank's name started with the letters "JE" and ended with an "S". My son laughed and said, "Oh, I thought that said Jesus Bank."

We all laughed at his comment, and I replied, "I'm glad you see Jesus in everything!" Then I started thinking...what would a Jesus bank be like?  That sounds like the kind of bank I would want to belong to

I imagine that a Jesus bank would have vast deposits of faith. This family bank has existed for thousands of centuries and is known for its loyalty. Built on the cornerstone of love, you can trust every promise made to you. Everyone's saving grace accounts would be freely given and yield a high return. Bonuses are often awarded for good works and acts of charity.  A checking account of actual grace is linked to the savings grace account for those daily situations when extra help is needed.  This bank becomes personally invested in everything you do, and its doors are open to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  No matter what stage of life you're at, the Jesus Bank is committed to being there for you always.

Would I bank at this bank?  Absolutely! I would bank on Jesus every day of my life, and every day in eternity!

All Souls Day

Often, while I pray the first glorious mysteries of the Rosary, I feel so grateful that I was born after Jesus' Resurrection! Jesus conquered death, and I no longer need to fear it. How immense is God's mercy! We don't have to fear the unknown because we know and follow Jesus. Choosing to trust in God instead of fearing is the deal of a lifetime!

Loss and grief are painful experiences here on earth, but they are transformed into joy in heaven. Today, let us pray for each other and for those souls who will begin their eternal life with God in heaven. Let us never forget that we are one family praying for one another. Souls on earth long for heaven, and souls in heaven long for our hearts to grow deeply in love with God. You know what they say, "The family that prays together, stays together." Your loved ones in heaven are praying for you. Make sure you are praying for them too. Some people overlook this incredible opportunity to love, and I hope you are not one of them this November.

I feel so blessed to know you! Enjoy your special day, and please continue to pray for me and everyone here on earth!

Dinner and Prayers

I was surprised one day when my son told me, "My friends think it's ridiculous that I have to come to the kitchen table and eat dinner as a family."

I was shocked.  "What do you mean? How else would we eat dinner together?"

Well, their moms just put dinner on a counter and everyone takes what they want and eats it in their room or in front of the television."

"Really?  I think that sounds ridiculous."  Sharing a meal with my family has always been important to me. It is a fantastic way for everyone to connect.  It offers a chance to talk about the day's events and learn about each other's upcoming plans. Sharing dinner with others goes beyond just eating nutritious food; it is an opportunity to learn from and about those at the table. So often in the Gospels, we hear about Jesus sharing a meal with others. A good meal is a great way to bring people together, and prayer is the best way to begin a meal. This got me thinking, could a meal be a great way to start a prayer?

Most experts agree that we should all eat a well-balanced meal. And I believe most saints would agree that our prayers should also be balanced.  Our prayers should include an entree of our personal struggles and a plea for help and understanding.  We should have a side order of intercessory prayers focused on others, and a tall glass of refreshing thanksgiving. A starchy side of repentance could be topped with self-awareness, reflection, and a desire to hunger for God's Will. A sweet, tasty treat of praise for God's goodness and love would be a perfect way to end the meal.

Just like a meal brings people together, so should our prayers. We should never be satisfied with grabbing our food and eating in silence. While eating, don't do all the talking. Listen to those around you. While praying, listen to God's responses. God has so much He wants to share with us. Good food and good company are the perfect way to be fed.

No Fear Lives Here

It's that time of year when haunted houses pop up everywhere. Sometimes it's the neighbor a few houses down, and sometimes it's a paid attraction. I have little interest in adding fear and anxiety to my life. I would much rather walk into a house where the peace of Christ surrounds me.

Imagine living in a world that doesn't want to increase our fears but instead takes them away. Imagine a world where people turn to God and trust His wisdom and love. Imagine a world where Jesus, Mary, and the saints walk among us and guide our steps. Imagine a world where everyone gathers in prayer, and your faith grows because of your neighbor's prayer. Imagine a world where the Gospel is not just a story in a book, but the driving force behind all your decisions.

This is the world I want in to live in.  It sounds heavenly, and it is entirely possible.  Jesus gives us His divine life and soul in every Eucharist we receive.  Jesus said, "I came that they may have life and have it more abundantly." Jesus came to establish God's Kingdom here on Earth. There is no lock on the door to the Kingdom.  Jesus has flung the gates wide open. Don't let any fears hold you back.  Why celebrate your love of fear when you can celebrate the love of Christ?

Meditating With Mary

With your eyes closed, envision the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Your desire to draw nearer grows as you whisper prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Mary quietly enters your thoughts as you pray and says, "Would you like to come closer? I know the way in." You nod. Mary reaches for your hand and gently holds it in hers. She raises her other hand, and suddenly, a door appears. She smiles and says, "Let me show you how to draw nearer to Him." Mary’s love pulls you closer to the love of Jesus.

Mary tells you, "We can stay here as long as you desire." With Mary by your side, your heart beats in unison with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and warmth engulfs your heart, almost overwhelming yet exhilarating at the same time. You close your eyes and allow the peace of Christ's love to fill you. Let go of all your stress and worries. Relax and remain silent as He whispers His desires. Listen carefully and allow His Words to realign your heart with His.  Remember, you can stay here as long as you desire.

Dedicated to Mary and the Rosary

My daughter needed pictures of her and her siblings as preschoolers for a project she's working on. She asked if I could look through the photo albums and send her a few. I always enjoy walking down memory lane when my children were younger. Revisiting all the happy moments in my life is always fun. I looked at all the first day of school, dance recital, prom, and homecoming pictures, and I smiled. But I smiled for another reason. In the background of many of my photographs was our statue of Mary. Mary is always with us. Thinking of all my moments with Mary brought happy tears to my eyes.
Although Mary is in the background of all my pictures, she has always been beside me or in front of me, guiding me through the twists and turns of my life. How grateful I am to have my heavenly mother always ready to help me with both big issues and small daily moments. If Mary had not helped me with the daily challenges, I would probably have fewer happy pictures of my life with my family.
October is dedicated to Mary and the Holy Rosary, and I can’t think of anything more powerful than praying a string of prayers with Mary and Jesus to help me get through life. The rosary isn’t just a habit for me; it’s a lifeline. Because of the Rosary, my life has more meaning, understanding, forgiveness, purpose, and love. My life isn’t perfect, and I don’t believe it ever will be, but I’m perfectly happy to spend each day with Jesus and Mary. Like the beads of the Rosary, my life’s path can shift and change, and I’m okay with that because Mary has never left me alone. She has held my hand, wiped my tears, and celebrated my joys, all while helping me focus on the crucifix. Mary helps me to understand that the crucifix is at the beginning and the end of the Rosary and every moment in between.

What Path Are You On?

Many years ago, when Maps was a new app on my phone, my family and I had a funny experience. Our vacation was over, and we were heading to the airport. My son entered the airport information. As we drove down the expressway, I saw signs for the airport. "Should I get off here?" I asked my son.

"No.  Just keep following maps.  It always finds the quickest route."

We drove for several more miles following the directions from "Maps." After taking a few more turns down what looked like a back road, the voice announced, "You have arrived. Your destination is on the left. Be prepared to walk two minutes." Stunned, we all looked to our left. Behind a very tall fence were the airport runways. We were close to the airport, but definitely not in the right place. What were we supposed to do? Abandon the car, climb over the fence, and run across the runways?! We can laugh about it now, but it was incredibly frustrating at the time. Circling back definitely put us on a time crunch.

I share this story because I want everyone to check their path this week. Today's world offers many popular options.  Some paths will definitely lead you away from God.  Some will get you close.  But are you on the path that will get you inside the gates? Double-check the voice of scripture and listen to His guidance. God has a very beautiful, intentional path designed just for you.  Make sure the voice you are hearing is His. And don't short-change yourself on time; be sure you have plenty of time to correct for mistakes.

So let's double-check our position and direct our hearts toward heaven. God wants everyone to make it back home. In fact, He's waiting for us with open arms.

Keep Striving

I have a running game with the children I teach at the church. I bring to mind a previous Gospel story we discussed, share four statements about it, and ask them which one is correct. I make the game easy for them, so everyone will win a prize.  Last week, however, I was surprised by how many children answered the question incorrectly.  I thought the answer was very obvious.  While preparing for this week, I decided to quiz one of my sons with my question.  Again, I believed the answer was clear.  He said," Well, I think number two is the correct answer. 'If we want to be followers of Jesus, we need to make God our number one priority',  but I don't think number four is wrong."

I look at the fourth statement.  It read, "There is nothing hard about being a follower of Jesus.  It's super easy." My eyebrows and voice raised at the same time. "You think being a Christian is easy? Really?  I certainly don't."

"Yes, it is, " he answered.

"So you have no problem with the ten commandments, forgiving others,  praying for your enemies, or being kind to those who mistreat you? What about always being honest? How's that going for you? Or proclaiming the Gospel to others?"

My son started laughing. "Ok, I see your point."

This week, ask yourself, "Which of Jesus' teachings do you find most difficult?"  Spend some time in prayer with the Holy Spirit discussing it.  For most of us, following Jesus is challenging.  It's challenging but not impossible.  The Holy Spirit will give us the necessary graces, but we must do the work and stay committed.

Now that I have given this question more thought, I have decided to change the fourth statement.  Now it will read, "Following Jesus is impossible, and no one can do it."  That statement should be clearly wrong to all my students, and with the Holy Spirit's help, I will pray that anyone who has walked away from the faith will realize this as well. There is a prize to be won, and Jesus wants everyone to obtain it.

Happy Birthday Mom!

Sunday, September 7, 2025

Oh, His Light!

My sister and I went on a girls' trip to Antelope Canyon in Arizona earlier this year. We were lucky enough to take three different tours of the canyons: one by boat and two separate hikes. The canyons were breathtaking and mesmerizing.  Depending on the sunlight filtering through, the canyons looked completely different.  You could stand in one spot and turn 360 degrees, watching the color intensity shift before your eyes. I took picture after picture trying to capture their beauty, but I fell short of doing it justice.

Faith can be like that, too. Feeling God's love is incredible! Then God reveals a little more, and you are even more amazed. As you turn to focus on His mercy, you can't even fully grasp it! As you try to share this experience and describe God's love to someone else, your words fall short because you can't truly capture how He has touched your life and changed your heart. His beauty can't be contained in just one conversation or thousands of books. His Light transforms everything! God is the adventure of a lifetime, and we are all lucky enough to experience it!

Listen Carefully

Last week, I was shopping for a new rocking recliner. With the arrival of another beautiful grandchild, I thought it would be a good idea. I found the perfect chair until I looked at the price tag. I guess it had been a while since I bought my last rocking recliner, and needless to say, prices have increased. I remember the saleswoman telling me there were additional chairs on the other side of the store. I wondered if they would be more affordable. Disappointed, I strolled over to the other side. I told myself it would take an unexpected windfall to afford a new chair.

As I went to try another chair, I saw something interesting sticking out of the side of the cushion.  It was a wallet with an outside money clip filled with money! I laughed, thinking, "Wow, my wishes usually don't come true like this."  I immediately turned in the wallet, knowing the owner would soon panic over its disappearance.

When I returned home and told my daughter the story, she laughed and said, "You know, Mom, if it wasn't for your morals, you would be sitting in a new chair."

  "I'd rather have my morals."

"What if that was God's way of helping you?' my daughter teased.

"I don't think that's the way God works.  But that is how someone else works, and I don't like being trapped in his lies."

I share this story because we live in a world filled with many voices, opinions, and versions of the truth.  There is, however, one Truth.  Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)  Consider how valuable the Truth is.  It is the path that leads to the Father.  Avoid any shortcuts or alternate routes.  Know the voice you are listening to and stay on the path leading to Eternity.

The Harvest

One of the many wonderful things to look forward to at the end of August is all the delicious farm-grown vegetables. Dinner sides and salads often rival the main course. I love a tasty harvest! My shade-covered yard doesn't get enough sun for my vegetable garden, so I rely on farmers' markets and roadside stands, but that doesn't mean I haven't been planting seeds. The seeds I plant are often slow-growing and bloom elsewhere. It is a garden not for myself, but for the Lord.

We can all sow seeds of faith, hope, and love regardless of our occupation, location, or lifestyle. The Lord has blessed us with these seeds, and He only asks that we accept what we are given and share it with others. It's such a simple concept. And during those seasons when the sun isn't shining in our yards, we can benefit from those whose harvest is plentiful.

This week, look deep inside yourself. Today might not be the right time for you to harvest. It could be time to plant new seeds or nurture what you've already grown. God doesn't require any green thumbs, only a heart full of love.

Mary's Assumption into Heaven

If you could mystically experience one moment in Mary's life, which would it be? There are so many moments to choose from. The birth of Jesus and Mary's Assumption would be at the top of my list. I would love to see Mary's face the first time she sees the face of God and holds Him in her arms. I also would love to experience the joy in Mary's heart when she is carried into heaven and sees Jesus' face surrounded by all His glory and the glory of heaven! I imagine her pure heart overflowing with love, knowing that neither time nor space would ever come between them again.

Mary desires that each of us long for that moment too—our moment when we will see the face of Jesus forever. Mary wants to bring us into unity with Jesus! She understands the deep longing of a soul craving complete union with God. Like Mary, we must be faithful and watchful while we live here on earth. So, grab your rosary and let Mary teach you how to stay faithful. She is eager to help you.

We would be wise to open the door of our homes to Mary just as Elizabeth and Zachariah did. Let Mary enter your home, speak your name, and allow the Holy Spirit to fill you. The sinless virgin can do so much for you if you let her. Once inside your home, open the door to your heart as well.  Let Mary write her prayers on your heart so that together you can give honor and glory to God. Give Mary your heart, and she will give you hers as well. Through the heart of Mary, you will see the face of God, hear His voice, and experience the joy of heaven!

We have so much to celebrate today! Let Mary open the door of our hearts to the splendor of heaven!

Walking Towards Heaven

Paulina knew she had tried hard to "fight the good fight."  Was she perfect?  Of course not.  She did her best to listen to the Lord's voice when making decisions.  She could clearly hear His voice right now. He was calling her.  A small smile appeared as she took her first step.  As she slowly walked toward heaven, she fixed her eyes on the Lord.

The path was straight and narrow, but many others were on the same path with numerous familiar faces around her. The music softly touched her ears, seeming to amplify the Lord's call at the same time. She was almost there. The glories of heaven surrounded her.

Paulina trembled slightly as she took her last step forward. Reverently, she bowed before the Lord, then fixed her eyes entirely on Him. This was the moment she had prepared for, and she was ready. She reached out her hands, eager to embrace Him. Then the sweetest words were spoken to her, "The Body of Christ."

Paulina let her heart, mind, and soul speak at the same time, "Amen!"

A Far Greater Plan

Last week, I talked about my family trip to Boston. One of my favorite things about vacations is that they can provide rest and a new perspective. My oldest daughter was excited to experience the Freedom Trail in downtown Boston.  She had learned earlier in the year that her husband's great-grandfather (x 5) was buried in one of the cemeteries on the Freedom Trail. Both my daughter and son-in-law wanted to pay their respects. Later, one of my other children asked my daughter why she was so excited about it, since it wasn't her heritage. My daughter quickly responded, "I wanted to say thank you. My husband or children would not have existed if it weren't for him."

I reflected on this conversation later.  Each of us, no matter how ordinary our lives may seem, is so important to God's plan of salvation.  Our names may not be written in the history books, but they are engraved in God's heart. Every time we respond "Yes" to God, we have the potential to change the world.  The measure of our success is not how we or the rest of the world view our lives, but how God sees them.  God's plans are far greater than we could ever imagine, and this thought gives me great hope.

People may not know about our trials, failures, or joys in a few hundred years. Perhaps the only thing that may endure is a name etched in stone.  Yet, I would consider it an honor to have a young family approach that stone and say, "Thank you, your life made all the difference in our lives."  And I hope they thank God for all His Plans known and unknown to them in their next breath.

Cathedral of the Holy Cross

While vacationing with my family in Boston, we had the chance to attend Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. It was a stunning cathedral, a masterpiece of architecture and art. The impressive stained glass windows, each depicting a different biblical story, bathed the cathedral in a kaleidoscope of colors. What caught my eye before Mass began was the gold angels in front of the ornate white altar. A crucifix in the center of the altar reflected the radiance of God's love. Statues of the saints, each a work of art in its own right, were scattered throughout the cathedral. This cathedral was magnificent, but that wasn't what took my breath away.

The art was beautiful, but more importantly, I felt the Holy Spirit nudging and reminding me that the angels, saints, and Mary celebrate the Mass with us.  Even though I know this is true, I can sometimes take it for granted. Looking at the gold angels above me, I was filled with awe, wondering how many angels were present during the Mass. This reality was nothing short of a miracle. I could experience heaven's glories by opening a church door and entering Mass. God's generosity and love are more than I ever deserve.

Celebrating Mass with my children by my side always fills me with joy. Feeling the presence of my heavenly family beside me lifts my happiness to new heights. I couldn't help but be overwhelmed with gratitude and thank God for this moment. This is the family vacation of my dreams!

You Will Be happy

One of my favorite movie lines came to mind today. The main character is about to get married and asks his best man for advice on marriage. The best man responds, "You'll be happy; you just won't know it." That simple truth always makes me smile. We often overlook the small, joyful moments, wishing for a fairy tale life full of endless fun and happiness. Rather than focusing on everyday blessings, we tend to judge our lives based on our worst moments and what we lack.

God is always working in our lives. Jesus reminds us of this during His Sermon on the Mount and His teachings on the Beatitudes. Even when life is tough, God is close to us, drawing us nearer to Him. Can we truly be happy despite our pain? Jesus tells us, "Yes." Even on our worst days, we can receive the Eucharist, and the Holy Spirit always dwells with us. Our cup isn't half full; it's overflowing with divine graces. We are blessed beyond understanding!

This week, do yourself a favor and try to remember all the blessings in your life. Our lives are better than any fairy tale. They are filled with God's love and Divine Presence! My advice is to remember that you are blessed, even when you don't feel it. If you spend your life united to God, you will be happy, and you will know it!

I'll Take That To Go

Jack pulled up to the window and rolled down his window. “Welcome to Heavenly Treats. Can I take your order?” asked the polite voice through the speaker.

“Yes, please, I’ll take the large cup of blessings, one order of forgiveness, and a side of charity.”

“What type of forgiveness would you like?” asked the voice.

“Oh, just give me a variety. I’m sharing it with my coworkers.”

“Would you like to supersize your cup of blessings?”

“No, thank you. I’m trying to sacrifice this week.”

“OK, pull up to the first side altar window, and we’ll prepare it for you.”

Clearly, this is not how we develop faith. We can’t demand God bless us (even though God freely offers this). Forgiveness should be given genuinely and intentionally, reflecting on our actions and the desire to rebuild our relationship with God.
Growing in faith requires time, commitment, patience, love, and trust. Some days are easier than others, and it involves prayer, reflection.  We need to discern God's call and then respond. We can’t just pick up some faith; we must dedicate our lives to honestly examining the truth of the gospels. We can’t just stop by church to meet our needs; we should bring the church to those in need. It will take effort, but as they say, “If you enjoy what you are doing, it doesn’t feel like work.”
Please come by the Church this week. Ask Jesus to bless and forgive you.  Spend time with Jesus and ask Him to reveal His heart to you. Stay as long as you can, then take Jesus by the hand and share Him with the world.  It’s okay to take Jesus to go.

Drive Safely

During a recent family road trip, I took the first shift driving so my kids could sleep. A few hours later, my son volunteered to take his turn behind the wheel, and I was glad to let him. It wasn’t long before I nodded off in the backseat, but I wasn’t asleep for long.

"Hey Mom, I think you should wake up now.”

I opened my eyes. “What’s wrong?”

“I think I’m going to get pulled over pretty soon. There’s a cop behind me.”

“Were you speeding?” Of course, I already knew the answer. I breathed a heavy sigh. “How much were you going over?”

My son, who has mastered the art of giving his mother elusive answers, replied, “Enough.”

I quickly saw him make the sign of the cross. I was about to comment that’s not how that works, but I kept quiet. We sat silently for a few miles until we saw the cop turn off at a different exit. My son got lucky.

As we continued to drive, I thought about my son making the sign of the cross. While our faith is not a “get out of jail free card,” I’m glad he thought to turn to God after making a mistake. Turning to God doesn’t get us out of the consequences for our actions, but God’s grace helps us navigate those consequences. Fortunately, we are never alone. God is always there to help us. We only need to open our hearts to Him and ask for His forgiveness.

Whichever road you choose this summer, I hope it draws you closer to God. Hopefully, the sign of the cross will be the only hand gesture you turn to while driving.
