"I Am the Light of the World"

This is a picture of my brother's backyard on Christmas.  My brother is one of those people who's yard always looks impeccable and his Christmas decorations and lights always turn heads, but he was truly humbled as he looked out.  He sent me this picture with the following message, "God's Christmas lights are always the best...Merry Christmas!"
I had been sitting beside my dad's hospital bed and missed the beautiful sunset, but I didn't miss the point.  Over two thousand years ago, God shared His Light with the world and Jesus continues to illuminate the Father's love to each of us.  When all of the presents had been exchanged on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, God reminds us that the best gift to receive is the Light of Christ. The world's lights of the season will come and go, but the true Light will never leave us.  My brother recognized that God had blessed our corner of the world with a beautiful gift this Christmas, and the best thing to do with God's gifts is to share them!

Merry Christmas!

May we humbly adore the beautiful Christ Child,
and allow ourselves to be overcome
with God's love for us!
Merry Christmas!

Advent Changes-The Invitation

Chelsea was surprised by Her guardian angel’s question.  Of course she wanted to say “yes” right away, but she knew that wouldn’t be easy for her.  Chelsea was not an extravert  How was she just supposed to invite people to mass.  Who would even listen to her?  Chelsea tossed and turned the rest of the night.
Chelsea woke up and remembered her dream.  It made her uncomfortable.  She knew she was being asked to change- to step out of her comfort zone.  How was she going to just ask people to come to church?  She thought for awhile. “Come on, Chelsea,” she said to herself. "Christmas is a religious holiday, this is probably a great time of year to try.”  As Chelsea continued to get ready for the day she came up with an idea.
She began going out of her way to wish people, "Merry Christmas."  Then she would ask them, "Hey, what do you like best about Christmas?"  She made sure she gave each person her full attention and responded positively to their answer.  Next she would share what she loved most about Christmas. She would always answer, “I love going to mass!”  Chelsea would share something she loved about the Christmas mass.  She was surprised how positively most people responded to her answer.
Chelsea knew this wasn’t exactly a direct invitation to go to mass, but she felt this approach was a good start. She was able to talk to others about the mass in a casual, comfortable way.  Was it simple?  Sure. Was she making a difference?  She didn't know, but Chelsea decided that it really wasn’t up to her alone. She was planting small seeds.  She knew that God could do great things with just the smallest amount of faith.  As Advent drew to a close, Chelsea found herself more excited than ever to celebrate the Christmas mass with everyone this year!

Advent Changes- Week 3

Chelsea continued to pray for guidance each night.  During the third week of Advent she experienced another dream.  In the dream she found herself praying at mass.  This mass seemed different.  The music was so joyous!  It was as if the number of voices singing had been doubled.  She looked around to see how crowded the church must be.  Chelsea was confused when she saw so many empty seats.  She turned her focus back to the mass.
After receiving Communion, Chelsea knelt down and prayed like she always did.  However, she felt a hand on shoulder and heard a familiar voice say, "Look up." Chelsea saw a brilliant beam of light coming from the altar. She had never seen anything so incredible.  She didn't understand how, but she felt as if her prayers joined with the light.  In the background she could hear the beautiful Communion song singing Jesus' name over and over, and she no longer knew if she was in heaven, or earth, or both! Her heart was filled with joy!
As the celebration of the mass came to an end, Chelsea once more noticed the number of empty seats. She again heard her angel's voice, "I truly wish everyone would answer the invitation.  They have no idea what they are missing."
Chelsea felt her angel's sadness.  "Maybe God just needs to tell them how beautiful the mass is and invite them again."
Chelsea felt her angel's hand on her shoulder and his breath on her ear as he asked, "Could He use your voice? Could you deliver His message?"

Advent Changes Week 2

Chelsea knelt down and repeated her prayer from the previous week.  "Lord, help me to draw closer to you this Advent season."  She thought about some of the changes she had tried to make this week.  Changing habits is easier said than done, but she felt like she was making some better choices.   Whenever she felt like making a snide comment, she held her tongue and remembered the beauty of the garden.  She pictured herself holding baby Jesus in this beautiful garden on Christmas Day. When she was done praying, Chelsea fell asleep trying to feel the incredible love she had felt in the garden.
An hour or so later, Chelsea found herself far from the beautiful garden.  She found herself walking on a dusty street amid make shift houses of cardboard one right next to another.  The conditions were deplorable.  Who could live like this? Unfortunately, there were many living here.  Old and young,  malnourished and sickly, and so many different ethnicities were crying out and speaking different languages. Their voices were piercing, their stares disturbing, and the smell was unbearable.  Chelsea wanted to run, but there was nowhere to run.  Why was she here?
Once again she felt a hand on her shoulder and heard him speak,  "Do you recognize where you are?"
"No! I don't!" Chelsea almost screamed. Chelsea slowly turned 360 degrees trying to take in everything.  "I don't know where I am, but its obvious these people need help."
"Who should help them?" her angel asked her.
"I don't know who could help them," she hesitated for a minute and then added very softly, "Why doesn't God help them?" As the words came out of her mouth, she suddenly noticed that many of the people were on their knees. She looked up for the first time and noticed a roof above her.  Chelsea was so confused.
"Chelsea if you look closely, you will notice you are in your church."
"What?  I have never been in a church like this!"
"This is the church you attend weekly."
Chelsea shook her head.  "I don't understand."
Christ came two thousand years ago to help the oppressed, the lonely, the forgotten, the poor, the isolated, the sinners.  The Church continues to do the same.  Think about some of the prayer intentions during the mass.  We are all children of God.  We need to help one another. We need to pray for one another.  If only people understood how powerful prayer can be. Prayer opens a heart and mind to the merciful love of God.  If only you understood His goodness and generosity, life on earth would be so different.  God hears every prayer and He inspires His people to act with mercy towards each other. But when hearts and minds and ears are closed to His voice, injustice and greed and jealousy flourish. Chelsea allow your prayers not only to touch the heart of God, but let your prayers touch the hearts of your neighbors.  Do not judge. Do not offer excuses.  Do not let your differences make you uncomfortable.  You are not different than them. At times, others have seen your face in this crowd.  God heard your cries and petitions and inspired others to help you.  Remember your garden will bloom wherever you allow it to grow roots."
Hours later Chelsea woke up.  The vision her angel shared with her, burned deeply with in her. She had always seen her church as a building that housed the Lord. Now she understood that the Church needed no walls.  The Church needed people to carry the light of Christ out into the world.  After a lot of prayer, Chelsea went outside and began tearing down the fences that she had built between her and her neighbors.  Then she got down on her hands and knees and began to plant a garden.

Advent Changes

Chelsea knelt down in prayer. "My Lord, I desire to draw closer to you this Advent season. I don't want to just repeat what I did last year. Sometimes I feel like I am not fully awake to Your Presence. How can I better prepare for Your coming this year?"  Chelsea resisted the temptation to continue speaking. She cleared her mind and waited for a response. Moments of silence passed.
"Ask your guardian angel to help you prepare," was the thought she heard.
Chelsea wondered how she might do this?  She turned her attention to her invisible angel and said, "Please my angelic friend, help me prepare for the coming of Christ."  Nothing happened immediately.  Chelsea finished her prayers and then crawled into bed.  She closed her eyes and fell asleep within minutes.  An hour later Chelsea found herself walking into the most beautiful garden she had ever seen. She had never seen plants and flowers like this before.  Their vibrant colors were indescribable. The flower petals felt like velvet and the blades of grass felt like silk.  Exotic birds rested in amazing flowering trees. Each step forward led to another incredible discovery.  The air gently blew around her with a hint of honeysuckle and orchids. A flowing turquoise river tumbled down a granite mountain misting the air with refreshing peaceful energy.  Chelsea sat down near the river. She placed her hand on her heart expecting to touch the love she felt, while listening to a beautiful song of praise being sung from the mountaintop.  It was the most joyful moment of her life. She wondered if she had died and gone to heaven.
Just then she felt a gentle hand on her shoulder.  "Do you not recognize where you are?" asked a voice.
"I'm sure I would remember being in such an incredible place," Chelsea answered.
"You are inside your soul the day God made you."
" I was made with this much love and beauty?"
  "Yes."
"Does my soul still look like this?"
Silence. "The beauty of your soul is up to you. The more you are open to God's love, the more beautiful it becomes.  Be open to God, but guard yourself from what is not. God's love is unlimited.  He can restore and heal everything."
Chelsea awoke the next morning remembering everything. She realized that God's love was even more incredible than she had ever imagined.  She thought deeply for a minute, and then got down on her knees.  "Lord restore my soul to its former beauty.  Help me to guard myself against any damaging habits. Help me to be open to new possibilities."  Chelsea spent the next week very consciously choosing to make changes in her life.  She was no longer willing to risk injuring the beauty of her soul with unthoughtful habits.

So Thankful to Be Blessed

I am blessed.  Some days that is difficult for me to say, and some days it comes more easily.  Like most people, I have my ups and downs, and plenty of difficult moments. I am not blessed with an easy carefree life, instead I feel like most of my blessings come as gentle little raindrops refreshing me and calling me to draw closer to God. As I prepare for Thanksgiving I would like to thank God for all these little moments.

So Thankful
Thank you God for putting so many smiles in my life
which made me feel happy and loved.
Thank you for those moments you helped me to see things clearer
and for giving me people who help me see things differently.
Thank you God for bringing loved ones to my aid
when I thought no one else was listening.
Thank you for all the outstretched hands
that generously helped me and made me stronger.
Thank you for all those moments you allowed me to feel
Your peace amidst my inner storms.
Thank you for those moments when life excited me
and laughter flowed with family and friends.
Thank you for the changes that I expected,
and all the changes I resisted.
Thank you for Your gentle touch of healing,
and for quieting the screams inside my heart.
Thank you for dwelling within me-
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
I am so thankful.
I am blessed.

The Present Moment

This week I had the opportunity to venerate a relic of Blessed Solanus Casey at my church.  It's hard to believe that two years have already passed since I attended his beatification ceremony.  It's so easy to love Father Solanus. Some of his superiors may have thought him to be too simple at first, but in fact, he simply loved Jesus-- and it was his love that made him extraordinary.  Day after day he happily opened the door to Christ's heart to everyone he met.
As I waited my turn in line, I prayerfully allowed my heart's intentions to ask Father Solanus for his prayers.  Was I hoping for a miracle? Yep.  I'm sure everyone else in line was as well.  I know that God is a God of miracles.  I know that God loves and cares for each one of us. So why not me?
Not only does God have extraordinary love for each of us, He wants what is best for our soul. It is hard to understand how our crosses lead us closer to God.  Crosses are painful. It is difficult to appreciate spiritual growth when we are exhausted physically and emotionally, or when we have to watch loved ones suffer.   I stood in line I hoping for healing, but more importantly, I stood trusting that God's plan for me is better than anything I could hope for. Regardless if my prayers are answered the way I hoped they would be, I really enjoyed spending time with Father Solanus. As I knelt down in front of his relic, I sensed a door opening for me. Father Solanus opened the door to Christ's heart and I was happy to enjoy being totally present in that moment.

A Touch Of Goodness

Sometimes when I listen to the news, I have to change the channel.  The violence and unhappiness in our world is so discouraging. At times it makes me wonder, "Is there any good out there."  Of course there is. God is good and His goodness dwells in each of us.
Today I’m going to ask you to find some quiet time and join me in prayer.   Close your eyes and pray, "The living God, lives in me. His goodness is overflowing." Pray it several times and allow yourself to get excited about God. What does God feel like to you?  What does He sound like?
If God is good and He dwells within you, you have an opportunity to share His goodness with others. Let God's goodness overflow in you and touch others.  Let’s make today a viol-less day.  God is more than good enough for me, is He good enough for you?

A Letter to My Daughter on Her Confirmation Day

But What If.....

How many of us have bought a product that promised to stop the effects of aging?  Of course, none of us can escape aging, we will all eventually wrinkle, go gray, move slower, and struggle with vision and memory.  We know that.  But what if ....there was a secret to slow down the process.  There are definitely some people who seem to age better than others.  If we didn't at least try, we might miss the opportunity that could really improve our lifestyles.  What if that product worked for us?
I imagine millions of dollars are spent every year chasing that dream.  But what if. . . there was a better dream to chase.  What if you embraced the Truth? What if you could find a way to stop the effects of sin in your life?  What if you could discover the path that led to eternity?  Would that be worth pursuing?  It is easy to believe the promises of advertisers, but what about the promises and suggestions of the saints?  Why is it easier to believe we can beat the effects of aging, rather than believe we have the power within us to become saints?
Today is All Saints Day.  Let's not just admire those who lived faithful lives even through difficult circumstances.  Let's ask them for their advice. Let's not be content with having mediocre faith lives, let's aim for something extraordinary.  What if we seriously took their advice and it worked!  What if the Lord has been waiting for us to jump at this opportunity? Shouldn't we at least try?

Step By Step

Have you ever helped a baby learn how to walk?  Day after day you hold their hand until they are sturdy enough to let go.  Then you stand close to them with your arms extended ready to catch them if they lose their balance.  It’s not long after that, the tiny toddler begins to walk from room to room, trusting they are always safe. Often they are completely unaware of nearby dangers.
And so it is with us and our heavenly mother as well. Mary is ever at our side teaching us how to walk in faith.  Even when we lose our balance, Mary is ready to catch us and keep us safe.   We should therefore be very careful to stay as close to her as possible. We should follow in her footsteps because she will never lead us astray. Mary knows the best and safest paths to Jesus. She can guide us past the dangers of pride, jealousy, deceit, and worldly desires.  Step by step, we become the child of God we were created to be.   Hand in hand, Mary brings us closer and closer to God.

How Beautiful!

Always stay close to this heavenly Mother, because she is the sea to be crossed to reach the shores of eternal splendor.
St. Pio

This past summer I found myself a little early for work.  I was pleasantly surprised when  I didn’t hit any construction or traffic.  I wondered what I should do with my extra 15 minutes. I remembered seeing a church down the road and headed in that direction. The church had a long entrance with what I thought was a parking lot on both sides. I decided to turn to the right, and was so excited that I did. At the end of the parking lot was a beautiful Shrine to Mary!  It was the perfect place to say my rosary.  I almost felt giddy as I sat down to pray in front of Mary.   It was so special to spend this time with her!
The shrine reminded me of the times I had been in Italy. It seemed no matter where you walked, eventually you would come across a small shrine to Mary or a statue of Mary with flowers.  I loved that!  I loved running into my Mom all the time!
I have been back to the shrine several times.  It just feels like a little piece of heaven to me.  I wonder if one of the surprises of heaven will be, that heaven was in front of us the whole time, we just had to pray with Mary to see it.

Shhh...Be Quiet

I happen to overhear a conversation between my daughter and my dog.  My daughter was trying to tell our dog that she wanted to do something special with him.  In the middle of her conversation, my dog ran to the window and started barking at a squirrel.  My daughter got close to him and tried to repeat her conversation, but my dog kept barking louder.  She tried a third time and my dog starting racing back and forth across the window ledge while barking nonstop.  Finally I heard my daughter just yell, "Hey could you just shut up for a minute?  I'm trying to tell you something important!"
My daughter's words made me stop and think.  I wonder how many times God may have felt like saying that to me?  Sometimes I can get so easily distracted while praying. Sometimes I can get so focused on my plans, my disappointments, my list of prayer intentions that I forget to stop and listen.  I forget that God does have a voice, He does have a plan, and He is speaking to me.  I need to remember that I can't do God's Will if I don't know what it is.  I need to quiet my own thoughts and be reflective and open to God's voice in my life. I need to be still, let God draw close to me, and tell me some important things, too. I need to relax and stop barking about everything.

Chain Reaction

It

I like this above quote by St. Francis Xavier Cabrini.  I feel that if the Rosary had a motto, it might be this.  Mary's greatest desire is to remind us of Christ's great love for each of us.  A rosary's simple design allows us to carry Jesus and Mary with us no matter where we may be. It is a symbol of faith, trust, and love. It mysteriously connects our lives to Jesus. It is a prayer that leads us to inner peace so that we may extend peace to the world through our words and actions.
October is the month dedicated to the Holy Rosary, and the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary is celebrated on today, October 7th.  I would really like to encourage everyone to share the Rosary with at least one person this month.  We all know someone who is going through a difficult time.  Why not pray the Rosary with this person, or invite someone else to pray the rosary with you for that person in need. Peace and love in our lives can never be underestimated.  Life can wear us down, but each bead of the Rosary starts a chain reaction in our souls.  It stirs us to love, He who is love. It challenges us to love as Christ loves. As we pray each rosary, we change, and then we begin changing the lives of those around us. It's an incredible chain reaction.

The Tunic (part 23)

(The Tunic is a fictional story based on the Passion of Jesus. The story began on post March 18, 2019.)

Livia did her best to smile as she walked with Cato inside.  She wondered if Mary, Martha, and Lazarus would still be willing to help them after seeing Cato draw his sword. She didn't even want to think what might have happened.  "Everyone,  I would like you to meet my husband Cato. Cato this is Lazarus and his sisters, Mary and Martha."
Lazarus quickly stepped forward.  "I apologize for our unannounced visit.  We mean no harm.  In fact, just the opposite, we would like to help you and your family."
Cato quickly glanced at Livia.  "Cato," Livia began, "Cato this is the Lazarus.  The man Jesus raised from the dead.  They are close friends of Jesus. Cato....they want to help us.....they have a plan." Then very quietly Livia added, "They know everything.  I told them about the tunic."  Livia could see Cato's face turning red as he forced himself to control his anger.  "Cato, please don't be angry with me. They are very good people.  If you would just talk with them.  They could teach us so much about Jesus. They want us to be followers of Jesus with them."
"Martha, why don't you and Mary talk with Livia and Remus outside for a bit. I think it would be best for Cato and I to speak in private."
"Yes, of course.  We will just be outside."
After everyone stepped outside Lazarus said, "Cato I realize it would be difficult to trust a complete stranger. Perhaps it would be better if you got to know me first.  Let's sit down and talk.  Please, ask me anything."
Cato ran his hands through his hair in frustration. He didn't know why Livia would have put the whole family in danger.  This is not how he had expected things to go tonight.  He just wanted to get on the road.  He had no time for conversations.  Cato looked at Lazarus and sized him up.  He honestly did not look dangerous.  He seemed very calm.  Cato let out a big sigh.  He shook his head back and forth as if he was telling himself not to do this. Then the question he had wrestled with for weeks bursted out of him,  "Did you actually die?"
Lazarus eyes widened and his lips tightened and he slowly nodded his head up and down.  "Cato let me try to explain what I experienced.  I do remember being very sick.  I remember having the fever for many days. I remember being very weak...and then.....I felt as if I was not physically connected to my body anymore.  I remember being in a place I had never seen before.  I wasn't in pain anymore.  I wasn't afraid. I just felt like I was waiting for someone.... I can't explain it, but I knew Jesus was coming.  He was going to meet with me soon.  I didn't feel anxious or scared.  I was totally at peace.  I had no concept of time.  I didn't even care. I was completely happy.
And then, I heard His voice, 'Lazarus come out!' A jolt of energy ran through me and suddenly I was conscious of my body again.  However, I was very confused.  For some reason, I was all wrapped up.  I couldn't understand why I was wrapped up. I didn't even know where I was.  Next I sensed a bright light filling the room. I tried to make sense of why my head, feet and hands were all bound up. Instinctively I just walked toward the sound of Jesus' voice.
I heard Jesus say, "Untie him and let him go." I had no idea why I was tied up. I felt someone pull the cloth from my head. The light was so bright I could not even focus at first, but I could hear.
I could hear so many familiar voices screaming and cheering, 'He's alive!  Lazarus is alive!'  Within seconds I could feel Mary and Martha's arms wrapped around me.  They were laughing and crying and praising God all at the same time.  I actually did not even understand what was happening at first.  I didn't know I had died. I didn't know I had been in the tomb for four days.  This crowd of family and friends which were gathered before me had witnessed my death, my burial, and my rising."
Cato listened very intently.  "Why did He not save you before you died?"
"Jesus wanted everyone to witness the glory of God! He wanted everyone to understand and believe that He was sent from God! No mere man could bring life back to a corpse. Jesus told Martha this, 'I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.'  Jesus is God's Son!  Death has no hold on Him!  He, himself, has risen from the grave! I believe that with all my heart! Jesus is the risen Lord, the Messiah! He has asked us to share this good news with everyone!  This is my mission--our mission, we must tell the world about Jesus!"
Cato was deeply moved listening to Lazarus.  He had heard this story from countless others, but never quite like this.  This was not just a story. This was a personal testimony of truth! Cato was beginning to understand why Livia was so trusting and then--Cato's heart sunk very low. "I am a terrible sinner.  I helped crucify Jesus.  I rolled dice to win His tunic.  I am not worthy of His promises."
Lazarus smiled.  "None of us are worthy of His love or promises, but Jesus offers us His forgiveness so that we may continue to grow in love and share His love with others. Before they removed the wrappings from my head, I was blind to the miracle he was working in my life.  Now my eyes have been opened, my heart beats to the sound of His voice, and I will follow Him wherever He calls me to go.  You were blind to His love until you saw it reflected in your son and wife.  You, too, were a corpse, but now, He is calling you to a new life. I know this may be very dangerous for you, that's why we want to help.  We have a plan."
Lazarus and Cato continued to talk for a long while.  Lazarus explained to Cato how they could hide in the cave at the back of their property until it was safe. Cato and Lazarus discussed a use of different signals which would alert Cato to any danger.  Lazarus promised he could bring them food and also that he would discuss getting Cato, Livia, and Remus baptized with Peter and John.
Cato was feeling very hopeful with this new plan. He looked at Lazarus very seriously and asked, "Why would you do all this for us?"
"Because we are brothers and sisters in Christ now.  God is our Father.  We are His children. We must love the way Jesus loves. If I demonstrate with my own actions how to love like Jesus, I hope to inspire you to do the same. Once you are baptized, you will receive His Holy Spirit. This powerful love of His Spirit will change you--if you allow it.  One by one we will inspire others to join us, to live in the Kingdom of God right here on earth.  A kingdom not of wealth or power, but a place where the love of God is visibly seen in the heart and mind and actions of all. I do not see you as a Roman soldier or a sinner, but as my brother in Christ."
For a few moments both men remained silent.  Cato had never had someone unselfishly reach out to him like this before.  There was something so different about Lazarus.  His physical appearance did not boast of strength, but his words spoke volumes to his inner strength and trust in Jesus.  Cato was beginning to understand why Livia felt safe to confide their secret to this family of three.
"Lazarus, I do not even understand everything that I am feeling right now, but I know something inside me has changed.  I am tired of the violence and turmoil in my life.  I have been longing for something different.  I knew something was missing in my life, but I didn't know what that something, or more accurately, that someone was.  I want to know Jesus.  I want to be a part of this kingdom you describe.  I want my son to have peace and love in his life.  I don't want him to reach for a sword as easily as I do." Cato quickly brushed away a tear of regret.  "I would very much like to accept your proposed plan.  I would like to learn how to love as Jesus does. I would be grateful if you could continue to teach me and my family."
Lazarus smiled.  "Come on, let's go tell the women.  We can all help carry your belongings."
Cato stepped outside and was greeted by Livia's gaze.  Cato looked deeply into those eyes he loved so much and reached out for her hand. "Livia, I have accepted Lazarus' generous plan.  Our lives are about to change forever.  Are you ready for this?"
Livia threw her arms around Cato with delight. "Yes! I have everything packed!"
That night Cato, Livia, and Remus walked away from their former lives in search of Jesus.  Cato found this new journey to be more rewarding than he had ever imagined.  After two years of hiding,  Cato, Livia and Remus were baptized.  It was a day of great joy for all of them. When Cato emerged from the water he tightened the belt around his tunic and remembered the tunic he had won that fateful day. Cato now realized what an incredible gift he was given. Through Jesus' death on the cross he was given a new life. A life of love, peace, forgiveness and eternal salvation. Filled with His Holy Spirit, Cato, Livia, and Remus spent the rest of their lives thanking and praising Jesus!

The Tunic (part 22)

(The Tunic is a fictional story based on the Passion of Jesus. The story began on post March 18, 2019.)

As Cato rode home he had a million thoughts competing for his attention.  He had already requested three days off from his superior officer.  The officer was reluctant at first, but Cato pleaded his son was in need of healing.  It wasn't the first time he had made this plea.  Everyone knew Cato's son had been in a fire.  Cato, however, never told any of his fellow soldiers that Remus had already been healed-- healed by Jesus.

Cato had stopped at their home in Jerusalem. He left his soldier's uniform behind and changed into a garment he had bought from a Jewish man at the market. For a moment he wondered if he was making the right decision. It was crazy to think he would place his life and those that he loved most in danger.  It was even crazier to think that he had so much trust in a God he barely knew.
Cato pushed his doubts aside as he wrapped up some blankets.  He wanted to give the impression that he was carrying his son in these as he rode away.  He didn't think anyone was watching him, but he didn't want to take any chances.  He began to ride in the opposite direction of Livia and Remus and circled back when he was far away.  He had been accustomed to taking a different path to them every time.  Their safety always weighted heavily on his mind. Cato wasn't exactly sure how to pray to Jesus.  He wasn't sure if it was the same as the Roman gods, but he begged Jesus to keep Livia and Remus safe. Over and over he prayed, "Please, Jesus, punish only me.  My sins are many, but please let them live.  Do not punish them for my sins."
As Cato got close to the house, he noticed a group of people gathered outside.  His heart started racing.  "How did they find Livia and Remus already?  I had been so careful."  Instinctively , he grabbed for his sword.  He would do whatever was necessary for his family.  Again Cato prayed, "Please Jesus, punish only me.  Let my family live!"
When he was almost upon the crowd, Cato drew his sword. He was ready for a fight!
Livia's eyes grew wide as Cato got close.  "Cato! N0! NO!  We're safe!  We're safe!"  She turned to Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, "Go inside quick!  He doesn't know who you are!"  The three of them ran quickly inside before Cato had dismounted. Livia ran towards Cato, "Cato, please put your sword away!  We aren't in danger!  They are friends.  Mary and Martha are my friends.  Lazarus is their brother."
Cato quickly assessed the situation digesting Livia's words. Friends. Safe. No danger. Cato looked around.  Remus was standing next to Livia.  Both were fine.  Cato cautiously put his sword back into its sheath.  He reached his arms out to Livia,  "You're ok?"
"Yes, Cato.  We were just talking.  We are not in danger."
Cato let out a big sigh of relief as he engulfed both Livia and Remus into his arms.  "I was so worried.  I thought...."
"It's ok.  We're ok."  The three just stood there holding each other for a few minutes.  "Cato, I want you to meet Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.  They are good people, Cato.  They won't hurt us. Although I'm sure you gave them a pretty good scare."  Livia raised her eyebrows and threw Cato a smile and squeezed his hand. "Come on, let me introduce you...we have something interesting to discuss with you."
"Come on, Papa, you will like them.  They are very nice!"
Cato let out another deep sigh.  "Are you absolutely sure they are not enemies Livia?"
"I am absolutely sure they will not hurt us," declared Livia. "You know I would never put Remus in harms way." Livia was about to head towards the house when she changed her mind.  "Cato is everything okay for us to leave?  Is there anything I should know?"
Cato looked around before answering in a very soft voice.  "Yes. We will leave today before anyone is aware of what we have planned."
Livia lowered her voice as well,  "Do you have a definite plan for us?"
"I don't have definite plans.  I have bought us some time.  We have at least three days before they will come looking for us.  We should be able to put some good distance between us and them.  We will have to find a good places to hide along the way.  I promise I will keep you both safe.  I will do whatever I have to do. I want to leave as soon as possible.  Can we just ask these people to leave?"
Livia hesitated for a second.  "We could ask them to leave, Cato, but could you at least come meet them first.  There's something I want you to hear."

The Tunic (part 21)

(The Tunic is a fictional story based on the Passion of Jesus. The story began on post March 18, 2019.)

Livia looked around.  Everything was ready if they were to depart tonight.  She was exhausted and anxious for Cato to return.  She wondered how angry Cato would be when he discovers that Livia had shared everything with Mary and Martha.  She would have to tell him . . .  eventually. . . and hopefully before Remus said anything.  She wondered if it was right to ask Remus to keep this a secret for a little bit?
Livia headed outside to find Remus.  She decided to put all her worries on hold for a few minutes.  This may be the last chance they would have to just play openly in the fields.  Livia had no idea what their immediate future might look like. She quickly found Remus and challenged him to a race.  Remus loved running now, and he discovered he was actually a fast runner.  Watching his face light up with a big smile as he ran made Livia laugh with pleasure, too.  Losing a race to Remus felt wonderful!
Livia had sat down for a minute to catch her breath when Remus shouted,"Look Mama! I think Martha and Mary are coming back!  It looks like someone else is with them, some man."
Instinctively, Livia grabbed Remus' arm and pulled him close to her side. "Remus, please, let me handle this.  If I tell you to run, I want you to run as fast and as far as you can.  Try to find a good place to hide until Papa comes home."
Remus was shocked, "What?  Why would I do that?"
"Please Remus, you must do as I ask!  Stay right here.  I will go talk to them first." Livia released Remus' arm and slowly walked towards Mary, Martha, and the unidentified man with them.
As Livia approached them, Mary began yelling, "Livia!  Oh, Livia! We are so glad you are still here!"  Both Mary and Martha were smiling as they approached slightly out of breath.  Livia remained silent and motionless.  She had no idea what to expect.
Livia was even more surprised when Martha reached out and grabbed her hand. "Livia, we want to help you! All of you! We ran home and told Lazarus everything! Oh, this is our brother, Lazarus."  Now that Lazarus was close, Livia could not help but notice the family resemblance.  Lazarus nodded his head and smiled.
"Livia, I'm sorry we left without saying anything.  Martha and I knew we wanted to help you immediately, but we needed to discuss the details with Lazarus first. We know of a place not too far from here that you could stay.  It's nothing special-- it's actually very primitive.  It is a cave at the very far end of our property.  Many years ago, it was used by my relatives for herding.  It's been unused for a long time now. It is a bit difficult to find and very few people even know it exists."
Livia was completely overwhelmed.  "You are not angry with us?"
"No," said Mary and Martha in unison.
"Livia, I'm sorry if we gave you that impression.  Your story was quite unexpected, but it is obvious that the Lord is working in your lives. I once heard Jesus tell his disciples that a healing that touched a person's heart and caused a transformation was by far more incredible than any physical healing," explained Martha.
"Oh, yes, that's so true.  Remember sister when He said that heaven rejoices more over one sinner that repents, then ninety nine righteous people who do not need to repent!"
Livia smiled at hearing those words. "There is so much I need to learn!"
"And we can teach you if you stay close!  We could also help keep you safe and make sure that Remus always has food to eat," promised Mary.
"I am so very grateful. I never would have imagined such generosity, but I will need to discuss this with Cato."
"Of course you do.  Lazarus would like to discuss some things with Cato as well.  He wants to ensure our safety as well as your family's safety.  I think we need to let the men talk, and then we will be able to work out all the details."
"Mary, are you sure you want to risk your own safety for us?" Livia asked.
Mary smiled as if she new a secret. "Livia, the Lord is calling each of us to a new life.  We must leave our old ways behind. We must love one another the way Jesus taught us. So many times I heard Jesus preach about loving our neighbor. The world could know true peace if we just loved one another. That is how others will know we are disciples of Jesus--by our great love for one another."
"Mama, I see Papa coming!" screamed Remus.
Livia turned her attention to the road and saw Cato approaching. She felt both excited and scared as she wondered how she would explain things to Cato.

The Tunic (part 20)

(The Tunic is a fictional story based on the Passion of Jesus. The story began on post March 18, 2019.)

Livia slowly told Mary and Martha everything.  She began with the day Jesus had been crucified and Cato's role as a Roman soldier.  Livia could physically see the pain in Mary and Martha's eyes when she told them Cato had won Jesus' tunic.  Jesus had been their close friend, perhaps this was too much for them to hear. Livia then told them how the tunic miraculously cured both Remus and herself.  She shared the details of their painful injuries from the awful fire and how Remus could barely walk.  She did her best to describe the powerful surge of heat which coursed through her body as she had been healed.  Remus explained in his own words what he had felt as well. Livia revealed her unquenchable thirst for Jesus ever since the healing. The woman sat very still as they tried to understand all that Livia was sharing.
"I am no longer the same person." Livia explained.  "I want to be a follower of Jesus more than you can imagine, but I know my sins-our sins-may not allow us.  Cato, too, has changed.  He no longer wishes to be a Roman soldier.  In fact, he is making plans for us leave.  Cato will be killed if Pilate and the other's discover his desire to follow Jesus.  He comes home tonight and we may leave immediately." The silence felt alienating to Livia.  She wondered if she should have said anything at all. Feeling desperate she pleaded, "Please, I beg you to keep our secret. I would not have shared any of this with you, except when I heard everything that you have experienced, I want to live with faith like yours. I heard you say that Jesus came to save sinners. I want Jesus to save me. I want him to save Remus and Cato, too."
"Livia, where will you go?" inquired Martha.
"I don't know.  It will be up to Cato.  He will keep us safe."
"You would risk your lives in order to follow Jesus?" questioned Mary.
"Yes.  We are sinners, but we desire to change.  Cato heard Peter speak of being baptized.  His fiery words touched Cato's heart deeply.  We all wish to be baptized, but we realize we have much to learn.  We will hide until it is safe.  Then we will begin again."
The women looked at each other.  "Livia, do not take this the wrong way, but we need to step outside for a minute and process everything you have told us," explained Martha.
Martha and Mary stepped outside to talk.
"Mama are Mary and Martha upset with us?" Remus asked.
"Remus, I don't know.  There are so many things I don't know."
"Well,  I'm very happy we are going to follow Jesus.  He's happy about it, too!" revealed Remus.
"And how do you know that?" asked Livia.
"I had a dream about it.  At least I think it was a dream.  I was laying out in the field when I heard His voice.  I didn't even know I was sleeping, but I heard Him say, 'Remus I want you to follow My ways.'  I told Jesus, 'Yes, I will!'  It felt really good to tell Him that. It made me very happy!"
Livia smiled at Remus and hugged him tight.  "Well if you made that promise to Jesus, then I think you should do everything you can to keep it."
Livia went back to packing some belongings when she heard Remus shout, "Mamma I think they left.  I don't see them anymore."
Livia was sad that Martha and Mary had left.  She had hoped they would have understood.  Livia realized that things might be more difficult then she had originally thought.  Still she really wanted to follow Jesus. She was ready to endure whatever it would take, because like Remus, she had felt Jesus calling her as well.  She, too, had told Jesus, "Yes!"

The Tunic (part 19)

(The Tunic is a fictional story based on the Passion of Jesus. The story began on post March 18, 2019.)

The next twenty four hours felt like a lifetime to Livia.  She spent half her time very worried for Cato's safety and the other half longing to be a follower of Jesus.  She was anxious, scared and excited all at the same time.  She wondered how difficult being in hiding might be.  It was a little past noon on the next day when Livia heard the knock on her door.  Her heart began racing.  Who could it be?  Cato wouldn't knock.  Had someone discovered their plans?  Were they coming after her and Remus next?  Livia's eyes desperately searched for Remus when she suddenly realized he had gone outside!  Livia was crippled with fear. Her legs were too heavy to move. Panic was coming over her when she suddenly heard--
"Mama! Mama! Look who's here to visit us!"
Livia's maternal instincts kicked into high gear as she ran towards Remus' voice.  She opened the door prepared to fight for their lives when she saw Remus smiling and talking with. . . Livia let all her adrenaline escape with one big sigh of relief.  Remus was talking with Mary and Martha!  Thank God!  Livia smiled as she greeted Mary and Martha.  "Hello!  It is wonderful to see you both again!"
Martha exclaimed, "Livia we have wonderful news!  We have just returned from Jerusalem!  The Holy Spirit has come upon us!  We have been baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!"
"Livia it's true!  We have seen the risen Lord! We have to tell you all about it!" burst Mary.
"Please come in," invited Livia.  "I want to hear all about it!"
Mary and Martha took turns describing everything they had recently experienced.  They had been on the hill when Jesus rose into the heavens.  They had joined in prayer for nine days in the upper room asking for the Holy Spirit to come!  They described in detail the powerful wind that blew through the room and the tongues of fire that came to each one that was present!  It was the most incredible, compelling experience of their lives.  Livia tried to absorb every detail.  Just like Peter, the woman were powerfully changed.  They wanted everyone to know that Jesus was truly the Christ!
Livia listened very carefully.  She knew she had so much to learn.  She revealed to the women that her husband Cato had been in the crowd.  He too had been moved by Peter's words!
"Livia, join us! Come be baptized! Both you and Cato can become disciples of the Lord with us!"
"There is nothing I want more!" confessed Livia.  "but we may have to wait a little bit."
"Livia let nothing come between you and the Lord.  He is calling you!  I can see it in your eyes.  You have heard His call.  You must answer Him!"
"Yes, yes I want to......it's just I must....I must...." Livia searched for the words.  "I must tell you our story first.  You may not want us."

The Tunic (Part 18)

(The Tunic is a fictional story based on the Passion of Jesus. The story began on post March 18, 2019.)

Day after day, Livia had hoped Martha and Mary would visit again. Livia had so many new questions to ask them.  She wondered if she had offended them since they had not returned.
She worried that perhaps Cato was right, and they had realized what he had done.  Remus even went to visit them at their house, but he said no one was there.
In the evenings after Remus went to sleep, Livia and Cato continued their conversations about Jesus.  Cato would now come home and share any new stories or facts about Jesus. Unfortunately, though, Cato began having problems at work.  Some of the fellow soldiers began to accuse him of being too soft during his interrogations. Cato knew they were right, but he insisted it was part of his strategy to get more information.  Cato wished he could speak with Jesus' closest disciples, but they were still in hiding.
Cato began feeling very anxious.  He knew that he was not going to be able to play both sides of the fence much longer.  He knew he could not answer to Pilate and Caesar and be a follower of Jesus. He could feel the conflicting stress rising within himself.  He was going to have to choose.
Late one afternoon Cato came bursting into the door.  Livia was surprised he was home so early, but even more surprised with his uncontained excitement.  "Livia! Livia I was there when it happened!"
"You were where when what happened?"
"Livia the followers, the ones closest to him, they are no longer hiding!  I was patrolling the streets this morning because of the Jewish celebrations, when all of a sudden they all emerged and began preaching to the crowd!  The one named Peter spoke boldly about Jesus being the promised Messiah and how he had indeed rose from the dead! He was so compelling!  He said everyone should repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus.  He said those who are baptized in his name will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and be forgiven of their sins!"
  "Cato, that sounds amazing!"
"Livia you have no idea! I somehow understood everything he was saying!  Livia he was speaking in the language and dialect of the small town I grew up in!"
"What?  What do you mean? He spoke just to you?"
"No!  I was riding amidst the crowd when he came out and started speaking to everyone!  Livia everyone understood what he was saying!  Everyone heard him speak in their now native language!  Everyone was talking about it!  People from Judea, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Asia, and Rome all heard the message in their own language!  You should have heard Peter speak!  I felt so alive when he spoke!  I can't explain it!"  Without warning Cato picked Livia up in the air and swung her around with excitement!
"Cato, what does this all mean?"
"Livia I think you were right!  We are being called to be his followers.  I wasn't sure before, but now....now I know!"
"Oh Cato!  How do we do this?!"
"I'm not sure exactly.  I know we need to be baptized!"
"Today?" Livia was as excited as Cato.
"Ummm......probably not today.  But soon.  We have to be very careful." Cato suddenly seemed very serious as he looked into Livia's eyes.  "Livia our lives are about to completely change!  I think we are going to have to go into hiding for awhile."
  "Hiding?  Why?"
"Livia, I'm going to have to leave the army.  I can't be a follower of Jesus in Caesar's army.  They would never allow it.  I'm going to have to leave and they won't like it.  They will probably send people to kill me."
  "Cato are you sure?"
"Yes, no one gets to leave on their own."
"What will we do?  Where would we go?  How will we survive?"
"I don't have it figured out yet.  That's why I said we can't do it right away.   I... I have a some money...the money from the tunic.  That will last us for a little bit."
Livia's excitement turned into fear.  "Cato I don't want to lose you."
"You won't.  I'll try to figure it out.  But I have to get back to Jerusalem before I am missed.  I'm going to spend the next two nights at our place in Jerusalem. I don't want anyone to discover where you and Remus are staying.  I'm going to work on a plan, but I need to know you two will be safe."
"Cato how will I know you are safe?"
"Don't worry.  I am going to appear to be a loyal Roman soldier.  Only you know my secret.  Somehow I'm going to make this work. I have to go now.  I will be back in a few days."

The Tunic (Part 17)

(The Tunic is a fictional story based on the Passion of Jesus. The story began on post March 18, 2019.)

"Livia," began Cato, "let's start the evening over.  I would be very interested in hearing about the new neighbors you met today."

Livia wasn't sure if she should say anything.
"Please Livia, I would like to talk about this.  I have been thinking a lot about Jesus as well, lately."  Livia was surprised and completely taken off guard with that statement. "I have questioned a lot of people about him.  I have gathered many facts. I was shocked that Remus knew so much about Jesus.  He spoke with such enthusiasm.  He didn't seem to question any of the details.  I don't want him to be disappointed, if Jesus is in fact, just some delusional man who convinced people he knew the one true God.  I don't want you to be hurt with that news either. And......and I don't want any of us to be hurt if he really was God's son."
Livia was shocked with Cato's words.  She carefully chose her response by asking Cato a question.  "Cato, can you share with me what you have learned about Jesus?"
"Well I learned that he preached right out in the open.  He drew large crowds.  Besides the Jewish leaders, most people liked what he had to say.  They would sit for hours listening to him without growing bored. He supposedly healed a lot of people.  I have a whole list of ailments people no longer have. He seemed to have helped so many. There doesn't appear to be any obvious selfish motives about his preaching.  He didn't demand people to give him money. He didn't ask for special favors. He didn't encourage anyone to act out against Caesar or Pilate.  He would just ask people to stop sinning and to start taking care of each other."
Livia began feeling more relaxed as Cato spoke.  "Yes!  That's what Mary and Martha said as well.  He spoke a great deal about love.  He spoke about how much God loves each person and we should imitate God and do the same.  Mary and Martha said just being near Jesus filled them with peace and joy!"
"Do you really believe their brother was brought back from death?"
"Yes, I do.  There were many people who witnessed this.  They had been surrounded by friends and family while they were mourning.  People had witnessed Lazarus being placed in the tomb. They saw him come out of the tomb as well.  Both Mary and Martha are very emotional when they described what happened.  It is a very joyful ending to an incredibly painful experience for them.  If only you heard them speak about Jesus yourself, you would be moved by their testimony!"
"I think I would rather hear it from Lazarus."
"Would you like me to arrange that?'' Livia asked with anticipation.
"Livia, we need to be very careful.  There is a lot at stake here.  Do you really think anyone would accept me if they knew what I had done?"
"Cato, I have thought about this as well. Mary and Martha told me how Jesus healed sinners.  He came for those who were lost.  His healing sinners angered the Pharisees many times, but he continued to do it.  Cato... do you think we are one of the sinners, one of the lost ones that needed healing?  I know the scars on my arms were healed, but I think something inside me has changed, too.  I am not the same person.  I don't know how to explain it, but I have this desire in me to draw closer to Jesus." Very quietly Livia added, " I never felt this way when I prayed to the Roman gods."
Cato remained silent as he stared at his wife.  He tried to take in everything she was saying.  This conversation was making him uncomfortable.  He felt like his world was being tipped upside down and he wasn't sure if he would land on his feet.  After several long moments Cato replied.  "Livia, I need some time to think about all this. I don't know how. .  . I'm not sure. . . ." Cato let out a big sigh. He shook his head back and forth as if he was arguing with his own thoughts. "I don't know what to think.  I feel different, too, and it scares me."
