Reflecting God's Love

During the Christmas season, I enjoy watching a movie on the Nativity of Christ. Most of the films are well done. But I have to admit, I am often uncomfortable with how Mary can be portrayed. There is always something off about her character. I have even been known to say aloud, "Mary would never say that, or she would never have done that." I have even stopped watching movies because they do not do Mary justice. It may seem I'm claiming to be an expert on Mary, but I will admit I'm not. However, I do know Mary. She is the most wonderful, caring mother I have ever met, and I love her dearly.

It is difficult for an actress to demonstrate Mary's most extraordinary qualities. Mary's humility, love for God, and obedience to His Will are unmatched. Her holiness is so beautiful because she magnifies God's love to all. When I sit with Mary, I feel God's love. Mary never comes between me and God; she always nudges me closer. The thought that Jesus would share His Mother with me is a blessing beyond comprehension.

This truly is a beautiful time of the year to reflect on the birth of our Savior, followed by such intimate feasts as the Feast of the Holy Family and the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. May the love of the Christ child shine brightly in your lives. As we gaze at Jesus lying in the manger, do not overlook the loving gaze He gives Mary and Joseph.

Merry Christmas!

As I played with my grandchildren this past week, I was filled with many memorable little moments. Hot chocolate with whipped cream, trees covered in lights, and making Christmas cookies. However, my favorite moment came while we were playing Barbies. My granddaughter handed me a doll and said, "Here you are, Mary's Mom."

 "Oh, I'm St. Anne?"

 "Was that Mary's mom's name?"

 "Yes."

"I'm going to be Mary. I need to put something under Mary's dress to make her look like she is pregnant with Jesus." Once Mary was ready, she yelled, "Joseph, hurry up, we got to go before it's too late." Joseph, formally known as Malibu Ken, was quickly at Mary's side in his bathing suit. My granddaughter had Mary and Joseph walking until she looked up at me and said, "How do you think Jesus was born?"

I smiled at my five-year-old granddaughter and said, "I think it was a special miracle."

She nodded and said, "I think so too."

I tell this story because I wish you all a Merry Christmas, and I hope you take the time to marvel over the birth of the Christ Child. I spent that same night praying next to my own manger figurines. I imagined what it would have been like for Mary and Joseph to see the face of God for the very first time. It must have been incredible to touch His little fingers and toes and gaze into His eyes. No presents. Just His Presence, which was the fulfillment of every hope and prayer that was ever uttered. Life on earth would never be the same. One little baby, Jesus, would change everything. From this day forward, humanity would not only be touched by God but would be able to touch God. The birth of Jesus was indeed miraculous!

Merry Christmas!

Adding a Little Gloss to Advent (Part 3 of 3)

Lilly sat down at her usual table in the cafeteria for lunch. Most of her friends were already there talking about something (or probably someone ) in hushed voices. Lilly set down her pizza and pop before leaning into the conversation.

"Did you even see what she was wearing today?" Emily said.

Commonly, Lilly would have immediately asked who they were talking about, but she decided to eat her pizza and not join the conversation. Her friends continued to give their unpleasant opinions about the original person and then moved on to others. Lilly had managed to eat her entire lunch before the conversation was turned to her.

"Lilly, why are you being so quiet? By the way, I noticed your new lip gloss today. That color is good on you, " said Eva.

Olivia, Lilly's best friend, answered immediately. "Lilly's grandma bought her the new Advent lip gloss set we were all talking about last week, but Lilly had to promise not to talk crap about people while she was wearing it."

"You are so lucky your Grandma bought that for you. By the time I got to the store, they were sold out. Anyways, who cares about what you promised your Grandma? It's not like she can hear our conversations. It's not like she is God," replied Eva.

"I know," began Lilly, "But that's the point. I made a promise, and I'll know I didn't keep it, and God will, too."

"Lilly, are you serious right now? Nobody keeps their promises anymore if they are not going to get caught. What are you so worried about, girl?" Emily asked.

"Because when I pray tonight, I'm going to feel embarrassed because I didn't keep my word," Lilly said, feeling stupid. Was she really talking about praying in front of everyone at the table?

"Do you really think God cares if you kept a promise to your Grandma? Look at what's going on in the world. I think God has much bigger problems, " Eva answered.

Lilly suddenly felt an inner urge to speak. "Ya, I'm sure He does, but I also think he cares about me and what's going on in my life. What am I supposed to say, 'Hey God, you know how you made all those people in my school, and you love them all. Well, I don't, and I'm just going to make fun of them because I can't help myself?' That sounds like a dumb prayer to me."

Olivia tried to come to her friend's defense. "That does sound dumb when you say it out loud."

Eva looked at Lilly. "Do you really still pray every night?"

Lilly replied, "Yes, of course I do. Doesn't everyone?"

"Not me," Regan replied. "I don't have the time."

Olivia started laughing. "The girl who knows every person's TikTok post doesn't have time. I wonder why? Ok, let's help Lilly out. How about we agree not to talk about anyone at the lunch table until after Christmas. Agree? There are plenty of other things we could be talking about."

Lilly smiled at Olivia. "Thanks." Olivia smiled back before changing the subject to her Christmas list.

A few days before Christmas, Grandma stopped by the house to make Christmas cookies. "You look pretty today. Lilly." Grandma said when Lilly walked into the kitchen.

"Thanks, Grandma. This is the best color lip gloss so far."

"I think it's more than just your lip gloss," Grandma said with a smile.

"Hey, Grandma, I've been trying really hard to keep your promise about being more kind. But I have to admit that it has been a lot harder than I thought it would be. I've screwed up a few times."

Grandma laughed, "Well, haven't we all. God doesn't expect us to be perfect but is pleased when we try."

"Well, I have been trying Grandma. I even got my friends to try, too. I never would have guessed that lip gloss would make me brave enough to talk about God with my friends." Lilly shook her head, "It probably wasn't the lip gloss at all. I think it had more to do with visiting the Blessed Sacrament and praying. I feel closer to God."

Grandma smiled, and her eyes glistened with held-back tears. "From your lips to my heart, Lilly. You have definitely grown more beautiful this Advent."

Adding A Little Gloss to Advent (Chapter 2 of 3)

Lilly jumped into her Grandma's car and headed for the church. As they pulled into the parking lot, Lilly reached into her pocket. "Oh no, I think my rosary fell out of my pocket. It's not here," confessed Lilly.

"Would you like to use mine?" Grandma offered.

"What are you going to use then?" Lilly wondered.

"Oh, I don't always pray the Rosary before the Blessed Sacrament. Sometimes, I talk to Jesus from my heart; sometimes, I sit in His Presence and try to listen. I like just being near to Him."

"Really? I always thought you had to say a specific prayer. Hmm, maybe I'll talk to Him from my heart today," Lilly replied as she and Grandma walked into the small chapel. Lilly sat down and looked around. She was a little surprised there weren't more people there. Lilly turned her focus to the monstrance as she allowed her heart to take over. Then she closed her eyes and became conscious of each breath she took. As she breathed in, she silently prayed, "Jesus, I believe you are here with me."

After a few minutes, Lilly opened her eyes and noticed two pictures behind the altar. One picture was the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the other was Mary holding Jesus in her arms. Lilly remembered her Grandma's words from yesterday. "Ask Mary what she did to prepare for the coming of Jesus."

For a few minutes, Lilly just wondered. "Mary, did you spend much time just wondering what it would be like to hold God in your arms? Could you feel Baby Jesus' heart beating inside you? What would it be like to be that close to God? What would it be like to know God depended on you to bring Jesus to the world?"

Lilly closed her eyes and wondered for a while. Interiorly, she felt her questions being redirected toward herself. "What does it feel like to be so close to Me, Lilly? Do you not feel me?"

"Of course I do. I just..." Lilly didn't finish her sentence.

"You just what?" the Voice questioned.

"How come it's so easy for me to forget you are always with me?"

"That's a good question. I never leave you, you know." the Voice answered.

"If you aren't the one who leaves, then it's because I leave. A tear slid down Lilly's cheek. "Why is it so easy for me to forget about you? " Lilly sat with her own question for a few minutes, feeling uncomfortable and foolish. "I don't have any good answers for that one. I'm sorry. I guess it's good that you asked Mary to bring you into the world, not me," Lilly said, staring straight at the monstrance.

"Lilly, Mary's role was very different, but I have asked you to bring me into the world. Bring me into your world and the people you encounter every day. Speak my words. Be my Voice."

As Lilly brought her folded hand close to her face, she felt the gloss of her new lipstick touch her hands. She looked at the glossy sheen on her hand. Lilly remembered the promise she had made to her Grandma. "Ok Jesus, my lips are yours," Lilly promised as a small smile spread.

Adding a Little Gloss To Advent (Chapter 1 of 3)

Lilly and her Grandma were pulling into the outdoor mall's parking lot. "Grandma, can we start at the big department store first? There is an Advent calendar I really want to get. I want to see if it's on sale."

"Oh, I would happily buy that for you, Lilly. Why don't you show me which one."

"Grandma, you are the best!" Lilly responded. Lilly led Grandma through the cosmetic section. "Oh my gosh," Lilly exclaimed, "They have it!" Lilly excitedly handed the gift box to her Grandma.

Grandma look very confused, "Lilly, I don't understand. "What does this set of lip gloss have to do with Advent?"

"Grandma, look, there are 15 different shades of lip gloss. I could wear a different one every day up until Christmas. Then, I will know my favorite on Christmas day, and I'll be ready!"

"Lilly, I don't mean to hurt your feelings, but I think you are completely missing the point of Advent. Advent is about preparing yourself for the coming of Jesus."

"Well, I could wear the lipgloss when I go to church on Sunday." Lilly looked at her Grandma's expression and set the gift box down. " I guess you don't want to buy it for me anymore."

"Let me think about it. Lilly. How about you help me pick Christmas presents for the family first?"

"Sure, that's fine," Lilly said, dripping with disappointment.

An hour and a half later, Lilly and her Grandma found an empty table at the food court and sat down to refuel. "You know Lilly," Grandma began, "I've been thinking about that lip gloss set. At first, I thought it had nothing to do with Advent, but maybe I was wrong."

 "Really?" Lilly said.

"I'll buy you that set on two conditions. First, I want you to visit the Blessed Sacrament with me tomorrow. I'm going to bring my Rosary. Let's ask Mary what she did to prepare for the coming of Jesus. You know she was about the same age as you. Second, you must promise me that you will only speak kind words when wearing your lip gloss. That may help get both your heart and lips to shine through Advent. What do you think? Do we have a deal?"

"Yes!" Lilly answered. Lilly smiled at her Grandma, thinking how easy this would be. Grandma smiled back, wondering if she was asking too much from her granddaughter.

My King

I remember traveling in Germany down the romantic road. It is a road scattered with castles and picturesque Bavarian towns. It was fun to imagine what life would be like inside the castle walls. Where did the king and queen spend most of their time? I wondered if the fortress-like walls around the kingdom made the people feel safe or trapped.

I have only met one King in my lifetime. He is the King of heaven and earth. He is my Savior. He is Jesus the Nazarene. He rules without any walls, inviting all to His Kingdom. I may visit Him any day my heart desires. I know where He lives and dines, for I hear His voice calling me to the supper of the Lamb.

I know I am unworthy to draw so close to my King, yet He embraces me, cleansing my heart to receive Him. I bow before my good and loving King as He bestows graces upon me that I do not deserve but so desperately need. I am free to love him or leave Him, which seems absurd. This all-knowing, all-loving King is preparing a place for me. A place more magnificent than I could ever imagine, and all I need to do is love Him. Honestly, why would loving Him even be hard?

The Spirit of Thanksgiving

This week, we celebrate Thanksgiving! I like the simplicity of Thanksgiving. We gather with family and friends and thank God for the blessings in our lives. We don't have to buy any gifts. No oversized cartoon turkey is sneaking into the house and leaving presents. There is just looking at your life and telling God thank you. Sure, the world tried to turn Thanksgiving into the hurry-up and end holiday so we can get to a Black Friday sale. And that was almost successful until the world discovered Black Friday sales could start in July. Fortunately, Thanksgiving was saved.

The spirit of Thanksgiving speaks to our childhood trust in God. Many of us go around the table counting our blessings like a seven-year-old child. No one questions if we deserve these blessings. We believe that God loves us and is active in our lives. I wished we had that type of clarity at every meal. No matter how many bad days we may have had in the past year, we can still see how much God loves us.

Jesus, I trust that you will continue to walk with me each day. Continue to bless me even when I am oblivious to Your actions. I may not be good at noticing the day-to-day stuff, but each year, I realize You are faithful and good to me, and I am truly thankful.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

One-On-One

My two-year-old granddaughter was spending the day with me. Shortly after lunch, she fell asleep. When she woke up from her short nap, she was surprised that the neighbor across the street had put up three pretty Christmas trees. Her eyes got wide as she exclaimed, "Christmas trees! We have to put up our Christmas decorations!"

I looked at the pumpkins on my porch and said, "I'm not ready for that yet. I've got some cleaning up to do first."

Before you pull out the Christmas decorations this year, mark a special day on your calendar. Concentrate on your soul first. Plan for a Jesus and me day. Pick a day to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation before your calendar gets too full. Let's face it: you could use more one-on-one time with Jesus. He's ready and waiting for you. Open the Reconciliation door and feel His embrace. Stay close to Christ! It's the best way to start the season.

Last Moments

Just before the end of their days, the leaves burst into brilliant colors. After revealing their inner beauty, they fall gracefully to the ground. The tree silently waits for a new beginning.

In our last moments, will we experience a burst of color as we reveal our inner beauty to the Creator? No longer green, our growing season as a disciple of Christ has ended. Our roots and family branches wait to be buried in the earth’s soil as our soul is exposed before our God. Will our true colors be that of faithfulness and love?

Let us pray that God’s mercy allows us to be purified for The Kingdom in that moment. Let us also pray for those in the process of purification. May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

Strive For Holiness

Today is All Saints Day! It is a beautiful feast day where we celebrate with all those people who led lives dedicated to God. Their life stories are incredible. If you are looking for a good read whose main character is a compassionate, courageous, selfless, evil-fighting warrior, open a book on any one of the saints and be amazed.

Although we are all called to be saints, I wonder how many of us actually think it’s obtainable? Is it like the lottery? I could do so many good things if I won, but the odds are against me. I’m not even going to buy a ticket. But I’m here to tell you that you should do everything possible to strive for holiness and sainthood.

First, the odds are entirely in your favor because God wants you to become a saint. He desires that so much that He is willing to shower you with graces upon graces to make it happen. Day or night, God is there for you. He gives His own body to strengthen us. We have His playbook that has thousands of His own personal thoughts and helpful hints. And He gave us each other. We can help each other to become saints! Come on, people, let’s do this! Set your sights higher than the lottery. Everyone call upon your favorite saint, and let’s join them in doing so many good things!

DISALLUSIONED BY DEMONS?

It's that time of year when walking down your neighborhood street can make you feel like you are in the middle of a horror story. As I take my daily walk praying the Rosary, I can't help but feel all those demons are trying to distract me. And to be honest, they have caught my eye. Some decorations are fun, but plenty are disturbing. I wonder if they realize how many families with children are in the neighborhood.

As you might guess, I'm not into horror stories. I did, however, recently pick up a book about spiritual warfare. I was almost afraid to read it because exorcisms scare me. Still, I fear there are too many demons plaguing our society and families. I wanted to know how to protect my children and grandchildren. I wondered if I was strong enough for such a task.

Fortunately, the book concentrates more on the interior life of those in our families. How can we help each other strive for holiness? What weapons should we use to fight the demons around us? Not surprisingly, many of the answers focused on the Eucharist and Mary. 'The Rosary is a powerful weapon against evil.'

So, am I strong enough to fight the demons in the world? Not by myself. But I know who my Father is. I am a child of God. My soul is marked by the waters of Baptism. The Holy Spirit dwells in me, I am fortified by the body and blood of Christ, and I am consecrated to Mary. The battle is waging all around me and my family. It is my job to fight. With my Rosary in my hand, I'm ready to fight the good fight. Can I count on your help as well?

Praying For Peace

Diary of St. Faustina

Lord Jesus,

On behalf of all humanity, I want to say I am sorry.  You have asked us to love one another, and we have failed. Lord Jesus, have mercy upon us all. Give us the courage and wisdom to trust your words and promises. May the peace of Christ change our world.

The Little Moments

I wanted to continue highlighting Mary again this week by sharing my conversation with my granddaughter, Isabella. Isabella looked at my roses when she approached my Mary statue. She looked at Mary and said, "GG, Mary would like one of your roses."

I smiled as I went to find my trimmers. I cut off a pretty rose from my bush and handed it to Isabella. Isabella placed the rose on top of Mary's head. "There, that looks pretty," she said. She spent the next few minutes playing around Mary. Then Isabella announced, "GG, did you know Mary is thinking about getting her haircut?"

"No, I had no idea," I said, smiling.

Now, I can neither confirm nor deny that Mary was thinking about getting her haircut because, to be honest, I was not privy to that conversation. I thought about it, though. How many times did I have conversations with my own mother about hairstyles? Talking about hair is a typical mother/daughter conversation.

I'm sharing this story not only because it makes me smile every time I recall it but also to encourage everyone to talk with Mary. Don't wait until you are in a crisis. Spend little moments with her every day. Like all mothers, Mary wants you to share your life with her. And she wants to share her life with you. I want to encourage you to pick up your Rosary beads and share with Mary what is on your mind, and then as you pray the Rosary, listen to what is on Mary's mind.

Clear The Path

My youngest granddaughter, Angelina, likes to say hi and hug my Mary statue whenever she goes by. She also only cares about being barefoot in the summer. I saw her wincing slightly as she tried to step on the mulch in front of Mary. "Do you want to put your shoes on first?" I asked her.

"No. I can do it," Angelina answered.

That evening, I remembered her difficulty getting close to Mary. I decided to make the path to Mary easier. I removed some stepping stones from a different part of my yard and placed them in front of Mary. My granddaughter was thrilled the next time she came over. She walked right up to Mary, "See, it doesn't hurt!" she exclaimed.

As we celebrate Mary this month, consider your path to Mary. Are there any obstacles preventing you from drawing close to our heavenly Mother? I find the way to Mary is the shortest, quickest path to feeling closer to God. I will run to Mary, yelling, "Mother!" and she grabs my hand and pulls me close to the heart of Jesus.

The path to Mary is always sweet. I encourage you to take whatever stepping stones are necessary to be by her side. Also, if you notice someone else struggling to be close to Mary, do whatever you can to encourage them. Mary should not be our own personal secret weapon. Mary is the weapon God chooses to step on the head of Satan. If we desire a world with less evil, then clear the path for Mary. Perhaps, once this is done, we will look at the world and exclaim with my Angelina, "See, it doesn't hurt anymore!"

Share the Rosary

This summer, I habitually prayed the Rosary with the Halo app as I walked my dog. I would put the volume on my phone just loud enough to hear while walking. I found it very peaceful. I could not step outside one rainy day, so I listened to the Rosary app while sitting on my couch. My dog just about had a fit. He heard the man's voice say, "In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,"  and he ran barking towards the front door. I couldn't believe it! Praying the Rosary had become a habit for my dog as well!

Now I realize my dog probably doesn't know how to say the Rosary, but I tell this story to demonstrate how easy it is to pray the Rosary. It is repetitive and relaxing. It's like wearing an old warm sweater on a crisp Fall evening. It just feels good. The comforting rhythm of the Rosary wraps the love of Mary around you as she opens your heart and mind to embrace God's love.

October is the month we honor Mary and the Rosary. I encourage you to spend more time with Mary this month. Some beautiful Fall days are coming, so why not share them with Mary. Invite a friend to join you. Sharing your love of the Rosary with someone else is a path worth taking.

The Perfect Gift

Recently I celebrated my birthday with my family. We had a lovely day together. At the end of the day, they gave me a large box. It was a very thoughtful present. Looking at it, I imagined how perfect the gift was for me. I was very grateful.

A week later, the large box was still in the room I received it. It did get pushed from one side of the room to the other, so people didn't have to walk around it. My granddaughter and I had fun drawing pretty pictures on the outside of the box. It still has yet to be opened because I need to learn how to build it. I feel bad because I would really like to use the gift, but I'm afraid to try. I might do it wrong.

Are there people who approach the gift of faith the same way? Our faith is a beautiful gift from God. A gift that was definitely meant to be unwrapped and used. So many fear speaking about their faith because it might not be politically correct. That is a shame.

Jesus didn't come to be a political ruler. He came to rule our hearts. Speak His Truth. It's beautifully contained in the Bible. But God never intended for the Word to stay on the pages. He wanted it written on our hearts and proclaimed with love. Don't make God wonder if you will ever use His gift; show God that you can't get enough of Him!

Loving and Mending

My granddaughter asked me to fix her favorite doll, Dolly. She had a small rip in the arm. She watched me closely as I sewed up the area to ensure I was doing it right. When I finished, my granddaughter was so happy and lovingly hugged her doll. “Honey,” I said, “I noticed another little area with some loose stitches. Can I also take care of that area before it becomes a hole?”

“What?” My granddaughter replied. “I didn’t even see that.” She examined the doll carefully. “Yes, you can fix it. I don’t want anything to happen to her.” A few minutes later, Dolly was all stitched up and looking marvelous. My granddaughter was thrilled.

I wish people were as easy to fix when they are torn. It’s hard to watch people we love hurting. It’s also hard to warn someone to reconsider their actions because you fear things may begin to unravel. It’s also tough being the one who is falling apart.

I used a needle and thread to fix Dolly. Dolly couldn’t fix herself. She needed someone to love her enough to ask for help. Moved by love, our prayers can tug on God’s heart to heal those in need. We may not know where to begin, but God does. Perhaps making you aware was His first move. “Love one another” isn’t just a beautiful scripture passage; it is the thread God chooses to hold us all together.

Sunny Days Ahead

Faith is like a bright ray of sunlight.
It enables us to see God in all things
as well as all things in God.
St. Frances de Sales

August has been an unusual month this year for my corner of the world. It is typically hot and sunny, but lately, the sun can barely be seen through the thick blanket of dreary water-laden clouds. Today, however, the sun broke through, and it was terrific. I love summer and the feel of the sun on my skin. When the sun is out, the flowers are more vibrant, the grass is greener, and the blue skies heighten my mood. Life is just all around better when the sun is shining.

This is how I feel about the Mass as well. After praising God, the rest of the world looks brighter, and my soul is elevated higher than I deserve. It is beyond amazing! I couldn't imagine life without the Mass.

Can people actually live without going to Mass? Well, truth be told, I know many who do not. It makes me sad. So today, I want to invite everyone who has taken some time off from going to Church to come back! You have been missed, and the Church isn't the same without you. I want to take this opportunity to tell you that you are loved and needed. It's been a little cloudy without you, but I know the Son has glorious plans for us!

Mary’s Day!

What a glorious day to honor our Lady! Although the Gospels only record a few moments in Mary's life, each moment spoke volumes of her love for God and her desire to always do God's Will. Imagine what the world would be like if we woke up every morning and said, "I am the handmaiden of the Lord. May it be done to me according to Your Word."

Sometimes I think about the people who were considered to be holy during Mary's life on Earth. Jesus made a point to correct what holiness truly is. Many Pharisees appeared holy, but their hearts were far from God. Mary humbled herself and magnified God. Jesus said whoever humbles himself will be exulted. Today we celebrate this truth as Mary is assumed body and soul into heaven. I hope our celebrations here on Earth match the heavenly celebrations of a heart so pure. Let us echo St. Elizabeth's words, "Blessed are you who believe that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled!"

The Good Shepherd

I was lost in my own thoughts and my own problems. I wandered a little too far away.  I turned around, and I didn't know where I was. My anxiety tried to dictate my thoughts. I was scared. It took only three little words to turn everything around.  I whispered, "Jesus, I trust in you." Within seconds, my heart opened my eyes and ears.

"There you are. I was worried about you.  Are you ready to come back home?" Jesus bent down and picked me up. He brushed away my anxious thoughts and just held me in His arms.

I took slow, deliberate breaths in and out, trying to inhale His love. Peace pushed away my heavy thoughts as I rested my head on His heart.  I was all HIs.  He left the ninety-nine others to find me.

"I love you, Jesus.  Thank you for caring so much about me. I thought I was lost."

"My little one, you have no idea how much I love you. Trust me, I will always be here for you."

The Fragrance of Love

I visited this beautiful lavender farm while on vacation.  I love the smell of lavender, and its promises to bring a night of relaxation and restful sleep. Unfortunately, this technique isn't always successful. The day's stress cannot always be rubbed away with a fragrant lotion. True peace has only one source--God's love.

God's love can heal my heart when broken and calm my racing thoughts.  The balm of God's love releases my angry thoughts.  It encourages me to breathe hope into my future.  God's love softly touches my face and tells me, "Don't worry, dear child, we will face this together,"

The peace of Christ can be found in a pew, a field, on a mountaintop, in your own home, in a smile, or in an outstretched hand. Christ's peaceful love is yours for the asking. Just open the door to your heart and say, "Lord, you are welcome here.  Please come in.  I want you in my life,"

Watch Your Step

My family and I undertook a big project in the backyard this weekend. It was quite literally an "all hands on deck" situation. At the end of the day, I rounded the corner of my house to grab a hose. I was carrying my granddaughter when I mistakenly stepped into a hole left by a talented groundhog. I felt my knee twist as I held onto my granddaughter tight. Fortunately, I was able to keep my balance and not fall. My knee hurt, but it was not a serious injury.

I was so mad at myself. I knew that stupid hole was there. It was on my "to-do list" to fix. I have managed to avoid it plenty of times in the past month, but this time I was distracted, and my vision was partially obstructed. I had to ask myself, "What was I so busy doing that I couldn't handle this dangerous situation?"

Sitting on my couch, I remembered one of St. John Bosco's dreams about the boys in his oratory. In his dream, John Bosco saw a large pit in the middle of a meadow and noticed a serpent at the bottom. Its ugliness horrified John Bosco. Then he saw his students jumping over the hole. Some boys jumped over the pit quickly, but not all were so lucky. The serpent got some of them. In disbelief, John Bosco asked the boys why did they keep jumping if they saw what was happening to some of their classmates? The boys didn't think their actions were risky. They didn't perceive the danger of playing near the serpent.

My children filled the hole for me as I rested. "Wow," my daughter said, "The hole was much deeper than it looked!" It is good that the Lord gave us each other. We need to look out for one another. I encourage everyone to look around their homes and determine if dangerous pitfalls need filling. Not everyone perceives the danger.

Going Up?

I recently had the chance to get away on vacation with my family. I love traveling and spending quality time with my children away from our busy daily obligations. After arriving at our resort, we were anxious to take the ski lifts up to the top of the mountain. I love mountain tops and the perspective it has to offer. Remembering that there is so much more to life than my typical vantage point is good. The view from the top was beautiful, and I felt very blessed to have had this moment. After some time, we headed back down. As we descended the ski lift, my blood pressure climbed higher. Halfway down the mountain, I saw a teenage boy climbing out of his seat. He stood on the unprotected chair, turned around, laughed, and waved to his friends in the seat behind him.

I gasped. "What is that guy doing?' My daughter and I shared a look of disbelief. As his seat passed ours, I couldn't stay silent. "Do you not value your life?" I yelled. My question was met with a laugh and a sarcastic comment. It wasn't long before the ski lift operators caught sight of his foolishness and stopped the lift as they screamed for him to sit down. We were informed at the end of the ride that he would be banned from the ski lift and would be walking down the mountain.

I couldn't get this incident out of my head. Thank God this teenager did not fall. The question I asked the boy replayed over and over in my thoughts, "Do you not value your life?" This would be a good question for all of us to meditate on this week. Most likely, none of us are blatantly taking chances with our actual lives, but what about our souls? Does God deem any of our actions reckless or careless from His point of view? Let's take some time this week to shut down the ride, look at our decisions from the top of the mountain, and reposition ourselves accordingly.

Time To Go Outside

I wanted to share the following quote with you.  It is a message from Mary that she gave to the missionary Marija at Medjugorje on May 25, 2023.

"Dear children! I am calling you to go into nature and pray for the Most High to speak to your heart and that you may feel the power of the Holy Spirit so as to witness the love which God has for every creature."

Sometimes our life gets too busy, and we forget to do the simplest of things.  Just go for a walk with God.  Look at a tree or a flower like you have never seen one before.  Ask God to open your eyes to the beauty of the world He created.

Do you remember when you were a kid, and your Mom was tired of seeing you sit inside?  Eventually, your Mom would suggest, "Why don't you go outside and play.  It's a nice day." So let's obey our Mother.  Come on, everyone, let's go outside and play! God's waiting for us!

A Lovely Dream

Linda was struggling to sleep. She tossed and turned, wondering why sleep was evading her. Slowly, Linda began praying her favorite prayer, hoping it would bring her peace. It wasn't long before she found herself sitting on the beach a few feet away from the ocean's edge. Linda felt like a younger version of herself
and noticed some children's toys nearby. She picked up a plastic shovel and filled the sand bucket shaped like a castle turret. As she was building her castle, she heard a voice over her shoulder say, "What are you building?"

Linda looked over her shoulder and smiled at Jesus as if expecting His company. "Oh, I'm just building a sand castle."

"That mold will build some good walls for your castle. Could I offer you something better?" Jesus suggested.

 "Sure," Linda said with anticipation.

Jesus handed her a flimsy mold in the shape of a heart. Linda looked at the mold and raised her eyebrows. "It looks pretty fragile."

"It definitely is. Most hearts are. But if you take the time and effort to build something, it should be made with love."

Linda carefully held the mold in her hand. "But it's so flimsy. Are you sure this will work?"

"I prefer a heart that is not hardened. It has much more potential to love."

"But if I use this mold and someone steps on it, it will be easily broken ."

Jesus smiled and said, "That's true. And when a heart is broken, it is then that I will come and reshape it with my own hands. I will breathe into it and fill it with life. I can't do that with a heart that is hardened. Sharing love is always more important than building walls. Wouldn't you agree?"

Linda nodded and let the peace of her dream overtake her as she heard Jesus whisper, "Share this with others."

#1 Dad

I stood behind a mother with a two-year-old child on her hip at the grocery store checkout line. As I put my groceries on the conveyer belt, I noticed one of the items she was purchasing. It was a basket of goodies with a sign that said, "#1 Dad". I smiled and thought, she probably didn't realize I had the number one Dad! Many of you would argue with me as well. I have no problems with that. I'm glad that so many wonderful fathers are incredible, loving role models for their children.

It's not so important who is the best dad as it is which Father is number one in our lives. God the Father, of course, should be number one in our lives every day! We are blessed to have a Father who loves us completely and is always by our side. Today make time to spend with God. Mentally picture Him next to you throughout your life-the good days and the bad days. Spend some quiet time immersed in His love. You will forever be the child He always wanted and dreamed of having. He just couldn't imagine a world without you.

Jumpimg for Joy

My children and grandchildren love to jump on our trampoline. They can do flips and toe touches and all sorts of acrobatics. My granddaughter will chant, “Come on, GG, jump higher like everyone else!”

I always smile and say, “It’s better for my body if I do smaller jumps. I’m not as young as you.”   Our bodies have limitations, especially as we age, but what about the Body of Christ? Do we willingly or unwillingly limit what the body of Christ can do in our lives?

I love the Eucharist! I know my life wouldn’t be the same without it. But I wonder if it could be even more than I have allowed it to be? Receiving the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus is foremost in my mind during Mass. Can I honestly say that the Eucharist is foremost in my thoughts for the rest of the week? My faith is my backbone, my heart, and often my thoughts. I repeatedly feel, however, that Jesus wants all of me and not just part of me.

Perhaps it’s not only my granddaughter who wants me to jump higher. I think it would make Jesus happier if I didn’t worry so much about my fears and shortcomings and relied entirely on the strength of His Body. With my arms stretched out to heaven and willing to do His Will, I  could reach heights I never thought possible. The Body of Christ isn’t just for Sundays; it is for every minute of every day afterward. After receiving the Eucharist, we should bend our knees and jump for joy because it is the Body of Christ; if we allow it, that will catapult us toward eternal happiness.

The Beauty of the Holy Trinity

Some people don't love mystery and intrigue. They want everything to fit inside a labeled box with clearly defined definitions and perimeters. The Holy Trinity is a mystery that goes far beyond our understanding, and I'm okay with that. I will spend my life chasing the mystery of the Holy Trinity, knowing I will never learn all there is to know, but just enthralled with every little new clue revealed to me!

I enjoy hiking with my family, especially in the mountains. When you are walking, the world's natural beauty is all around you. It's peaceful and quiet. You know your surroundings because you don't want to take the wrong path mistakenly. Even if you are tired or hot, you just keep going because you know this path will be incredible in the end! Whether it is a mountaintop view of the world or a breathtaking waterfall, the trail's future is more than your senses can take in.

This is how I see the Holy Trinity. It is a beautiful, mysterious adventure. Even though I cannot comprehend the Trinity nor the path He will lead me down, I can feel the beauty of His Love all around me. Whether I am conversing with God the Father, God the Son, or God the Holy Spirit, I speak with a God who is Love itself. And no matter how tired I am, I thirst for Him. Of course, I am just a small child with little thoughts, and I'm okay with that because when the time is right, God will reveal His magnificence so that I can comprehend how mighty He truly is. So, for now, I will follow all God's clues allowing this quest to shape my future for tomorrow and all eternity!

Praying for A Powerful Pentecost

It's Pentecost! What an exciting day for all of us! I can only imagine the excitement in the upper room that day. Mighty winds and tongues of fire sound absolutely incredible! I understand why everyone was excited that day. But I wonder why people also don't allow that same power to consume them today. If you don't feel the Presence of the Spirit in you, do something about it. The Holy Spirit's power is as transforming today as ever.

Pray with Mary and the disciples. Be willing to make changes in your life. The apostles didn't return to their everyday lives after receiving the Holy Spirit. Instead, they opened their eyes and hearts to grow more lively with love for God. The fire may have begun as a flame above them, but they embraced it and allowed it to burn in their hearts.

Today allow each of your "Amen(s)" to ignite the power of the Holy Spirit within you. Be brave and allow the Holy Spirit to transform you into the child of God you were destined to be! You were formed by God to change the world. Let's not waste another minute. You got this because the Holy Spirit's got you. Today is our Pentecost, and it's going to be great!

My Mary

I want to share what I have learned about a mother's love from Mary. Even though I am not her only child, Mary makes me feel like I am. No matter how busy she is, she always has time for me. Mary listens--I mean, really listens. She listens when I'm mad or hurt, or confused. Whether I'm right or wrong, she lets me get everything off my chest before she gently calms me down and then helps me think through things. Her perspective often differs from mine, so I always value her gentle instruction.

When I'm elated, Mary's spirit soars around me. Together we giggle when the Holy Spirit takes me to new heights, and we marvel at the goodness of God. Her heart is pure joy, and yet she understands sorrow so well. Mary never gives up on me. She knows which dreams matter and which ones I should let go of. My advice for everyone is to love Mary with all your heart and let her love you with all of her heart. Mary's heart is filled with love for the Trinity, and while my heartbeat says, " lub-dub, lub-dub," Mary's heart always says, "Love God, Love God!"

Happy Mother's Day, Mary! I love you!

The May Challenge : Dancing with Mary

Many of us are familiar with the show Dancing With the Stars. A program where celebrities team up with professional dancers and compete against each other. The stars have varying degrees of experience and train intensely with their professionals to learn the choreographed dance.

May is the month we honor the Virgin Mary. Would you allow Mary to lead you to dance and rejoice in the Lord? At first glance, the rosary may appear to have simple choreography. Still, the subtle nuances of Mary's wisdom bring this number alive. Gracefully she turns your face toward the Lord and positions your feet and fingers to fluently move forward. With love and faithfulness, your body will experience the beauty of every prayerful bead of the song.

You will discover that Mary's patience never tires. Her disposition is always sweet. Will it take some work? Definitely, but the payout is eternally rewarding. Throughout the training process, Mary surrounds you with others who are the best in their fields. Saints will cheer you on and encourage you to keep dancing no matter how tired you feel. It is the ultimate experience of a lifetime! Ready to take this challenge? Then,  reach your hand out to Mary, and she will lead you step by step to her heavenly Son.

Can You Hear His Voice?

I was talking with a friend about her one-year-old toddler. She revealed that when her son was frustrated, he would bang his head against a wall. "Why would he purposely choose to hurt himself? I spend all day wondering how to make him happy, and this is what he chooses to do." Most parents can relate. We want what's best for our children. It's hard to watch them make a poor decision. But, unfortunately, we can't make our children or others listen to us. We can talk louder so they hear us, but we can't make someone listen. Listening is a choice.

I wonder if God ever feels this way? Like my friend, He spends all day giving us what we need to be happy, and we sometimes make poor decisions. We may not be banging our heads against a wall, but our choices may be self-destructive. This is why prayer is vital so we can be tuned in to God's voice.

Over and over, God calls us to a life of holiness and love. Even when we choose to go our own way, God never gives up on us. He continues to pour His love and grace into us. Sometimes we may feel lost, but God never leaves our side. We are His beloved children, and He is calling us to draw near to Him. We have so many choices in front of us every day. Listening to our loving Father should be the obvious choice. Let's choose God and see if life becomes sweeter and more peaceful.

Let Your Heart Shout

As I stood in the gathering space of my Church, I saw my daughter and granddaughters coming through the door. Excitedly the grandchildren ran toward me and gave me big hugs. As I picked up Angelina, a little shy of two years old, she exclaimed, "Jesus!" as she looked over my shoulder. Instinctively I turned and looked at the large picture of Jesus. "You are right! That's Jesus!" It made me so happy that she had already recognized Jesus!

This got me thinking later. How many of us exclaim Jesus' name as we enter the Church? Unlike children who are put in a car and surprised where they end up, most of us are not surprised when we pull into the church parking lot and get out. We know exactly where we are going, or do we? Yes, we are at Church to celebrate the Mass, but have we forgotten that "the altar on earth is united and fused to the altar in heaven?" (Eucharist Prayer 1) Do we bring an attitude of wonder and awe that matches this reality?  Do you recognize Jesus before you on the altar? Does His Presence take your breath away? It should.

As we enter the Church this week, let's be excited. Let your heart shout, "Jesus, I see You!" Let your ears hear His voice. And let your lips praise Him joyfully!

Divine Mercy Sunday!

What a glorious day! Today is Divine Mercy Sunday! The joy of Easter touches us today in a unique celebration of the mercy of God.   Jesus has been so generous to us! First, He gives us the Divine gift of Himself in the Eucharist at the Last Supper. Next, Jesus demonstrates the depth of His love on Good Friday by offering His life so we may be saved. Lastly, He conquers death and sin through His resurrection and opens the gates to the Kingdom for all to enter.

There is no love greater than this.   God wants us in Eternity with Him- all of us. And to dispel doubt, He places a magnificent fountain for us to bathe in before we enter the Kingdom. It is the fountain of His Mercy.

The appearance of our souls before the fountain should not prevent us from entering. Jesus only desires that we place all our trust in Him, and He will bathe us in His loving mercy. Do not let fear keep you from the Kingdom. You are loved. You are wanted. Your past was yesterday. Today is Divine Mercy Sunday; your future is with Christ the King. Today is a day of celebration! Please join us!

Happy Easter!

Just before my morning alarm went off, I felt the light of day caress my cheek and a tiny whisper in my ear. “ Alleluia, He is risen! Alleluia, He is risen!”

My eyes opened as my heart beat faster. I jumped out of bed and exclaimed, “Yes, Alleluia, He is risen!” Joy overtook my senses. Today was not only Sunday but Resurrection Sunday! The day that changed everything.

My Glorious Lord stepped out of the grave and into my life. He has rescued me from sin and death with arms full of merciful love. I begged the Lord to hold me tight and never let me forget this moment. Peace filled my being. Love encompassed my thoughts. Today my King has opened my prison doors and offered me the Kingdom! Rejoice with me!

Focas Forwad

"Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, deeply regretted what he had done. He returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, "I have sinned in betraying innocent blood." Mark 27:1-4

Heather closed her bible as those words pierced her heart. She had heard those verses countless times, yet today, she felt a personal pull. Heather allowed herself to consider Judas for a minute. He certainly wasn't the person she wanted to identify with in the gospel. Definitely not. He was so easy to dislike. Heather thought for a minute about Judas. What did she know? He was the one who controlled the money bag. The man who voluntarily sold the whereabouts of Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. He was at the Last supper with Jesus. Allowed Jesus to wash his feet and dipped his hand into the dish with Jesus. He led a crowd carrying swords and clubs and then betrayed Jesus with a kiss.

Heather shook her head, "I am nothing like Judas... am I?" She sat with that thought for a long time, wrestling with her conscience. What had she confessed last week in the Reconciliation room? "Okay, well ya, I'm obviously not perfect. Those were just small betrayals. Everyone sins. Is Jesus as okay with my small betrayals as I am?" She let out a big sigh. "Probably not." She continued to think. "Have I ever cared more about money than my faith?" She looked around at all the things she possessed. The answer to that question was obvious. "Well, at least I never betrayed Jesus with a kiss...have I? Have I ever kissed Jesus on Sunday morning at Mass and then focused the rest of the week on my own agenda?" Tears began to run down Heather's face. "I don't want to be like Judas. Holy Spirit, please help me!"
