Love, Hope and Possibilities

This weekend we will celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family.  At my parish church we have a statue of the Holy Family hanging in the gathering space just outside of the worship area. I am very familiar with this statue, because unfortunately, near this statue is where I spent many Sunday masses when my children acted up in church.  Frustrated, I would tell my kids, “Do you see how nice Jesus listened to His parents?”
Needless to say, my family is far from perfect.  I often find myself repeating certain phrases such as, “We don’t use that word”, “Stop teasing”, “Why would you do that?”  And to be fair, my children have a mother who is often more tired than she is patient and understanding.  How can we ever become a holy family?
Holy doesn’t mean perfect (thank goodness).  Although my family has plenty of imperfect moments, we also have lots of moments where we say, “I’m sorry”, “I forgive you”, and “I love you”.  We keep trying to get it right, because deep down, we really do love one another.
“Love one another” is Jesus’ message.  It is a message of hope and possibilities. The more we love and care for each other, the closer we come to holiness. As we celebrate the love Jesus, Mary, and Joseph shared, let us remember to ask them to aid us in bringing holy love into our own families.

When Angels Speak (part 6: the conclusion)

When Angels Speak began on blog post Dec 5, 2017

You close your eyes and feel James place his hand on your shoulder once again.  You allow yourself to become completely wrapped up in the the feeling of peace, love, and joy that are powerfully felt inside you.  You loose any sense of time or space and just enjoy this amazing feeling.
"Alright, you can open your eyes again," James states.
You open your eyes to find yourself in the middle of a field.  In front of you is a man in his early twenties.  His clothes are quite shabby and his face has smudges of dirt on his forehead and left cheek.  He is lying on his back and staring up into the night sky.  His lips look like they are moving and you realize he is quietly praying.  You take a step closer to hear his words.
"God of the universe can you hear the cries of the poor?  I am an outcast living alongside fellow strangers.  Tonight, like most nights I am hungry.  Orphaned since my youth, I have longed for you.  I long to know love, and to be part of a family.  Inside me, my loneliness grows.  I am too ashamed to enter the synagogue.  I have nothing to offer you-- except my heart.  Could that ever be enough?  Could you ever love an outcast like me? .... I wonder about that a lot?"
The man closes his eyes and attempts to pull a very worn blanket around his shoulders.  You look at James and ask, "He is obviously very poor.  Is he homeless as well?'
James answers, "Many of the shepherds are very poor.  At times they appear more lost than the sheep they watch.  They occupy of very special part of God's heart.  He loves each of them dearly.  The emptiness this man feels will soon be a part of his past.  In a few months, He will witness a multitude of angels singing and announcing the Messiah's birth. He, alongside others, will be the first to visit baby Jesus.  He will also experience the love of the holy family.  For the rest of his life he will share this love with others, and he will never again question if God loves him.  He will allow this encounter with Jesus to transform his life."
For a moment you and James just stand their staring at the sleeping shepherd. Then James asks, "Do you wonder why God has asked me to share these moments with you?"
You nod your head and say' "Yes."
"You, too, have wondered why God hasn't answered your prayers.  You have cried out in pain searching for answers, and you have questioned if God even loves you.  God wishes to draw closer to you.  Let me tell you that God loves you tremendously.  He is always at your side.  He wants you to trust in His Plans and in His timing.  God wants you to be filled with peace, with love, and with joy.  This year as you celebrate the birth of Christ allow yourself to be transformed.  The birth of the Christ Child changes everything.  God wants you to be filled with the joy of this miracle!
Close your eyes, now, it is time to go back. Although you will no longer see me, know that I am always with you.  I will be praying with you and for you. I would love if our mornings included praise along with your coffee." You look at James and smile.
James places his hand on your shoulder.  You close your eyes and instantly you are filled with love and peace, except this time you can hear the voices of a thousand angels singing "Glory to God in the highest and peace to those on whom His favor rests!"  It was the most beautiful song you have ever heard as you experience the joy of the angels on that most blessed of all nights. You wish this moment could last forever.
You open your eyes again to your own familiar kitchen.  You look around hoping to see James, but he is no longer visible to you. You close your eyes trying to remember everything you had just experienced. In your memory you can still hear those angelic voices.  You suddenly realize "that moment in time" could last forever, if you let God transform you as He desires.  Your smile grows wide as you realize what a wonderful Christmas this will be!

When Angels Speak (part 5)

When Angels Speak begins on blog post 12-5-17.

"I'm not really sure," you answer.
"You, too, must trust that God knows what is good for you.  I wonder why so many have such difficulty trusting God?  His love is so much greater than you realize.  Remember, your sorrow can be turned to joy as well.....Now close your eyes again.  I would like to share another moment with you."
Eager to feel that surge of love again, you close your eyes and feel James place his hand on your shoulder.  Your heart expands with peace and love, and with each breath, you can feel your lungs expanding with joy.  The feeling is incredible!  It feels as if you are being drawn closer to heaven with each breath.
James voice interrupts your thoughts, "Okay, you can open your eyes again."
As you open your eyes, you appear to be just inside a courtyard attached to a simple house.  You notice a man pacing back and forth.  Every few steps he stops momentarily to drag his hands through his dark, curly brown hair.  He stands their as if he is holding his head from the exploding thoughts inside.  Suddenly, he just falls to his knees.  He looks completely distraught.  He folds his hands in prayer and buries his head behind his clasped hands.
His body is trembling as he prays, "I will trust in you, my Lord.  I do not rely on my own intelligence..... My Lord, my heart is deeply troubled.  I beg you to instruct me.... I do not wish to stumble.  I am all but ruined.....  I feel betrayed.....  I do not understand what my own eyes can see. ... I know the law..... but I can not bring harm to the one I love.... Lord, allow me to act discreetly.... I place all my trust in you.... Guide my thoughts.... Speak, Lord, your servant is listening..... Let me hear in your mercy, for in you I trust..... Show me the path I should walk, for I entrust my life to you....  Let your Spirit guide me.... guide me with Your Wisdom...."  Next, you notice the man stretch out his arms and hands on the ground as his body continues to tremble.
You look at James and ask, "What has happened to this poor man?"
"He has discovered his betrothed is pregnant....the child she carries is not his.  This holy man relies not on his own understanding, but trusts completely in God's Holy Spirit to guide him.  Praying to the Holy Spirit to aid you in your decision making opens your heart to God's Will.  This holy man is Joseph.  Joseph understands that he needs the grace of God to get through this most difficult moment.  Notice that he does not allow his own personal pride and confusion to interfere with God's Will for his life.  He remains open to God's desires.  Often people pray for God's help, but at the same time continue to hold on tightly to their own pride with both hands.  Sadly, those are the people that sink into despair, because their hands are too full to grab a hold of God's outstretched hand.  God prepares and delivers special graces to those who are hurting.  A holy person, like Joseph, will desire the grace of God over their injured pride.  God can work incredible miracles when you allow Him.  No one can argue how deep Joseph's pain is right now, but God has a plan that is about to change everything.  This pain will soon become overwhelming joy.  Mary and Joseph shall aid in bringing the Messiah into the world!
God has allowed me to share one more moment with you.  Are you ready?"

When Angels Speak (part 4)

(When Angels Speak began on blog post 12-5-17).

You nod your head yes and smile.  James looks so happy with your "yes".
"Excellent.  I will need you to follow my instructions.  I am going to share with you some moments from the past.  God has granted me the privilege to share these with you.  Although it will feel like we have left this room, physically you will still be here.  Don't try to comprehend the physics that are about to occur.  It is beyond your comprehension.  Focus instead on what you will see.  Do you understand?"
You feel butterflies in your stomach as you take in James instructions. An excited but nervous "Yes," escapes from your lips.
James smiles and says, "Don't worry, I always take good care of you.  I want you to sit in this chair.  Now close your eyes and listen to my voice.  I am going to keep talking."  Next you feel James hand on your shoulder.  It feels powerfully strong, yet comforting at the same time.  A wave of peace comes over you, and you feel completely relaxed.  An instant later you feel a warm breeze blow through you.  Your heart feels as if has grown in size attempting to hold onto an incredible surge of love within you.
"Ok, you can open your eyes again," instructs James.
As you open your eyes, you try to take in your surroundings.  You notice a woman praying in the corner of a small room.  The room has a dirt floor, very few furnishings, and absolutely no modern conveniences.  You look at James with confusion, but James is completely focused on this woman.
  "Just listen," says James.
The woman speaks a different language, yet somehow you able to understand what she is saying.  "Do not  forsake me, O Lord; my God be not far from me!.....  Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my salvation...."  (She then begins to weep.)  "Listen to my prayer, Lord, hear my cry; do not be deaf to my weeping!...... Be gracious to me, Lord, for I am in distress.....my life is worn out by sorrow, and my years by sighing.  My strength fails in my affliction...my bones are wearing down....I hear the whispers of the crowd; terror are all around me.....But I trust in you, Lord; I say, 'You are my God.'..My destiny is in your hands.... (Again she begins to cry wiping the cascade of tears from her face.)....... Blessed  be the Lord, the God of Israel, from all eternity and forever."
The woman is obviously distraught.  Your heart is moved by her deep sadness. James quietly reveals, "She is praying from the book of Psalms.  She has been praying like this for 10 years now."
"Ten years!  Why does God not answer her prayer?"
"Oh, He will, but not now.  In seven more years, her prayer will be answered."
"Seven more years! Why so long?  Is she a sinful person?  Has she angered God?"
"Definitely not.  God is very pleased with her," answers James.  "She is faithful, loving, and kind."
Bewildered you ask, "Why doesn't God answer her prayer then?"
"It is not the right time.  Mankind has such difficulty being patient.  Many turn their backs on God and walk away because they do not understand or trust in His timing."
  "Does this woman walk away?"
"No.  This woman has placed all her trust in God.  She remains faithful even when it appears that the answer to her prayer is 'no'."
"Wow, that's a long time to wait for a prayer to be answered."
James smiles and says, "Perhaps.....but God's response to her prayer is amazing!  Do you know who this woman is?"
  "No."
"Her name is Elizabeth.  She will be the mother of John the Baptist, the messenger who prepares the way for the Messiah!  Not only will she be blessed with a child, but the Holy Spirit will reveal to her Jesus' Presence in the womb of His holy mother, Mary!  She will be filled with incredible joy when Mary comes to visit her!  Her prayer will be answered at the exact right moment in time!  Together, Mary, Elizabeth, and their unborn sons, will praise and rejoice in God's goodness! The answer to Elizabeth's prayer goes beyond anything she could have ever imagined. Her present sorrow will be turned to jubilation. Can you guess why God wished to share this moment with you?"

When Angels Speak (part 3)

"When Angels Speak" began on blog post 12-5-17.

You close your eyes and in a fraction of a second James is standing next to you.  He places your hand in his, and then raises your arm over your head.  Instinctively, you raise your other arm as well.
James says, "Repeat after me.  My spirit rejoices in God my Savior!"
Quietly you repeat, "My spirit rejoices in God my Savior."
"Good, now proclaim it for all of Heaven to hear," instructs James.
"My spirit rejoices in God my Savior!"
  "Again!"
"My spirit rejoices in GOD MY SAVIOR!"
  "Again!"
"MY SPIRIT REJOICES IN GOD MY SAVIOR!"
  "HOLY IS HIS NAME!"
You repeat, "HOLY IS HIS NAME!"
  "HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER!"
  "HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER!"
James lowers your hand down and exclaims, "Now that's the way we should start every morning!  Look at the smile on your face.  I haven't seen you smile like that in awhile.  Do you see now?  Mary said 'yes' to God's Plan. It is amazing what God can do with a 'yes'!  'For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son,  that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.'  Heaven rejoices over Mary's 'Yes' every day! God's love is so incredible!  You could feel His love couldn't you?"
  You smile and say, "Yes!"
"You don't realize it, but if you say 'yes' to God's love, it will transform you, if you let it.  Advent is a great time to open your heart to God.  I would love to share some experiences with you,  are you interested?"

When Angels Speak (part 2)

(When Angels Speak began on blog post 12-5-17)

"When was the last time I really praised God?"  That's a good question.  You begin to search your memory as you allow yourself to crawl back into bed and under your nice warm blanket.  You close your eyes and continue thinking.  "What exactly does that even mean?  I say my prayers every night.  I mean I don't get excited about them, but I say them.  Hmmm. . .  . I wonder why I don't get excited?"  As you ponder this last thought you drift off to sleep.
Thirty minutes later you hear your alarm go off.  You reach over and hit the snooze button allowing yourself another 5 minutes of rest.  "Wow, what a crazy dream I had last night.  Since when do I dream about angels?  Wait,  what did he ask me? Something. . . about praying. . . no it was something else. . . . praising, that's right, praise God."  You smile as you crawl out of bed and head for the coffee maker.  "What did he say his name was?"
  "James.  My name is James."
Your head spins around towards the kitchen table.  There he is just sitting at the table.  You shake your head attempting to wake yourself up.  "I must be sleep walking.."
"You're not asleep.  We start every day this way with a cup of coffee.  You sit there, and I always sit over here.  The only difference is that today you can see me," said James.  "Praise God for His goodness!  Praise God the Almighty Father who loves each of His children and pours His blessings upon them!"  James smiles and begin to sing praises to God.
You are absolutely amazed by James.  As he sings and praises God, you feel an energy fill the room.
"That's not energy your feeling.  What you are feeling is the Presence of the Holy Sprit!  Open your heart and mind to Him!  Feel His Presence inside you!  Put down your defenses and let Him fill you with His love!"
  "James, I don't know how.."
"You do.  Close your eyes and let your whole being be filled with His Holy Spirit!  Go ahead, you can do it!"

Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary

As I sat down to write this post I wondered, "How can anyone use mere words to describe the grace of God?  Are words ever adequate   to illuminate the beauty of God's love?"  Probably not.  I wonder what words heaven uses to express God's amazing generosity and bountiful love?  Since I am just a simple person, I have decided to keep things simple today.  This is how I would describe the beauty of today's feast.
From the very moment of Mary's existence, God looked at Mary and said, "My dear child, I love you immensely."  Mary didn't let these words lie dormant in her heart.  No,  God's words echoed in every beat of her heart.  Mary, in turn, spent the rest of her life responding with the words "I love you, too!"
This is a love story that began some two thousand years ago, and continues today.  How honored are we to witness such love.  How beautiful is a soul without sin.  I hope you allow the mystery of this love story to inspire you as you consider your own love story with God.  Have a blessed day!

When Angels Speak

"Wake up!  Wake Up!  How can you sleep on such a glorious day?"
As you roll over, a bright light hits your face. You instantly close your eyes, and bury your head under your pillow.  "Shut that light off, it's blinding me," you growl.
"Oh, sorry.  I was just so excited!  She said 'Yes!'. She said 'Yes!'  All of heaven is talking about it!"
  "Who said yes?"
"Mary, of course!  Mary said 'Yes!'
"Mary, who?  What are we even talking about?"  Suddenly a stream of panic runs through you.  'Who are you even talking to and why are they in your room?  Oh my gosh, this is not good."  You begin to stress out as you think,  "Where did I leave my phone last night?  I'm going to need to call for help." Slowly you open your eyes and scan the nightstand for your phone.  "Great, it's not there."  Your heart starts racing as you realize that you will have to deal with this intruder yourself.  Swiftly you jump out of bed in an attempt to protect yourself and yell, "Who are you?  Why are you here?"
The stranger seems a bit surprised by your abruptness.  "You don't recognize me?  I have been with you since birth.  I mean granted you have never physically seen me before, but isn't my presence at all familiar to you?"
You sternly repeat your question, "Who are you?"
"I am James, your guardian angel."
  "My guardian, what?"
"Your guardian angel.  God has granted that I may be visible to you, in order to help you discover what is getting in the way of your love for the Almighty.  Have you not been praying to discover what is missing in your heart?  Well, I am here to help you."
"You may think your funny, but I don't!  Get out of my house now or I will call the police!"
"Please don't get angry. That is the exact opposite of how I wanted you to feel.  The long awaited Messiah is coming!  Praise God! Praise God!!  You spend such little time doing that.  I find that so odd.  I sing praise to Him constantly!  Why don't you?" As James spoke the word "you" he disappeared.  His words, however, lingered for a long time in your mind.
You stand there confused, trying to remember everything James had spoken.  "Was I still dreaming or did that just really happen?" you ask yourself.  Surprisingly, you dismiss that question and ask yourself instead, "When was the last time I really praised God?"

I'm Dreaming of .....

This past week I asked you to consider where you see yourself on your spiritual journey.  I hope you have given this the honesty your faith life deserves.  I have one more question for you to consider as we prepare our hearts for the Advent season.  If you could ask God to share one of His gifts with you, what would you ask for?  What is missing in your heart?  The Christ child is coming.  He is God's gift to the world, but He also comes bearing gifts to share with all of us.  What is your heart's desire?  What are you dreaming of?
Do yourself a favor and spend some time praying about this with God.  If you want to grow spiritually this Advent season, you have to know where you are, and what do you feel is lacking for you to grow closer to Christ.  The angels are beckoning you to come see the Christ child, make whatever preparations are necessary now, so that you can move forward.

Honestly, Where Are You?

As the 2017 liturgical season comes to a close, I thought it might be a good time for each of us to take a look at our own spiritual path.  What does the path you are on look like?  Is it smooth or rocky?  Is it going forward or backward?  Ascending or descending? Are you crawling, walking, or running?  Are you on this path alone or are you traveling with others? What word best describes the terrain?  Are you using any type of compass?
Our Advent journey will begin very soon.  Are you ready for it?  What preparations are you making?  This would be good time to take an honest look at yourself.  Soon the angels will be beckoning us to journey towards Bethlehem.  Let’s all get ready for the trip.

Thanksgiving!

Today we will gather with family and friends and count our blessings.  According to St. Ignatius, we should spend time each and every day examining how God has been present to us, and recognizing all our little blessings throughout the day.  It’s funny that if you sit people down at a table filled with delicious food, they are not only willing to think about the blessings in their life, but they are willing to openly share how they have been blessed.  Thanksgiving is actually the perfect day to evangelize.  Today it will not only be socially acceptable to talk about how wonderful God has been in your life, but people are expecting it.  I wish Thanksgiving happened more than once a year.  Feasting on God’s blessings is filling— and fulfilling.  Who wants seconds?

Beatification of Father Solanus Casey

My family and I had the privilege to attend the Beatification Mass of Father Solanus Casey at Ford Field on Saturday.  It was an incredible experience!  The stadium was filled with over 60,000 people.  It was amazing to see so many cardinals, bishops, priests, Capuchins, and other religious orders all at one mass.  At different points of the mass I would glance up and be almost overwhelmed with the number of people all gathered around the alter.  A passage from the book of Revelation kept coming to mind, "After this I had a vision of a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue.  They stood before the Lamb....."  This was just one small corner of the world, I can't even imagine the multitudes in heaven.
I have been at Ford Field many times as the football players from the Detroit Lions have run out of the tunnel and onto the field with fans screaming, but I have never been as deeply touched, as when I saw the long procession of bishops come out of that same tunnel in order to honor our own hometown boy, Father Solanus.  Father Solanus was a very humble man who dedicated his life to prayer.  His prayers were a visible witness of his love for Christ as he served the poor and the sick.  He was the beloved door keeper at St. Bonaventure.  He physically opened the door of the church, and  the door to Christ's heart to so many in need.  I would definitely recommend reading the story of Blessed Father Solanus' life if you are not familiar with it.
Part of the beauty of our faith is that we are able to join with the angels and saints in praising God.  My eyes fill with tears when I try to even comprehend that.  I, who am sinful, weak, and undeserving, am loved by God so much that He calls me His child, gathers me into His arms, and allows me to share in the joys of His magnificent family.  I felt so blessed to be a part of this celebration.  The mass was beautiful from the beginning to the the end, and the music was extraordinarily moving.  I am looking forward to the day Father Solanus will be called St. Solanus.

A Web of Thanks

It's that time of year--parent teacher conferences.  It's a great opportunity to sit down with your child's teacher and talk on-on-one about your child.  Being a mother of six, I have been to my share of conferences.  I have learned to ask my kids ahead of time, "What do you think your teacher is going to say?  Do you think there are going to be any surprises? (In other words, is there anything you want to tell me first? Or any problems you feel you are having?)
When I asked my youngest that yesterday she looked at me completely shocked.  "Mom, you know me.  I love school and I'm a good student!"
This year, however, I discovered I was in for a surprise. As I sat and waited for my turn with the teacher, I looked at the display of school work on the walls.  The assignment was a writing piece entitled  "I am thankful for....".  The assignment began with brainstorming ideas using a web.  One web caught my eye when I saw the word "God" inside one of the circles.  I smiled.  As I continued to look, I saw God's name on many of the assignments, and also the words "my faith", "my church", "my religion classes".  I continued to smile as I read the papers written from these webs explaining why they were thankful for God in their lives.
My mood elevated as I read. I realized that no matter how hard some people try to take God out of the public schools, they will never succeed.  God is alive and well and living in the hearts of these children-- and that is something that I am quite thankful for.  I wanted to give a shout of "Thanks!" to all the parents who have made God a priority in their children's life.  Keep up the good work!  The future really does depend on it.

Story of a Leaf

A little leaf hung from one of the tall residential trees.  The leaf was quite ordinary.  It was green like all the others.  Every day the little leaf prayed that God would do something wonderful with it's life, but day after day, it appeared to be an ordinary green leaf like all the others.  The little leaf loved to watch all the people as they walked along the sidewalk underneath him.  As they walked by, the little leaf would ask God to bless them in some way.  He prayed and he prayed. Sometimes he wondered if his prayers made any difference to the lives of those who passed by him.
As the leaf got older, he noticed he was starting to shrivel up a little bit.  It was harder for him to sway with the wind like he used to do.  He began to feel frail and lonely.
One day while he was praying he distinctly heard God's voice, "I'm coming to visit you today."
The leaf waited with eager anticipation. In the afternoon a very bright light surrounded the little leaf, and then something incredible happened.  His coloring began to change.  The little leaf looked extraordinary!  Then he heard God's voice again, "This is how you will look for all eternity.  The beauty of your prayers will shine for all to see!  Do not be afraid in these your last days.  I am with you."
The little leaf trusted God completely.  He prayed over and over, "I love you God.  Thank you for all your blessings."  A few days later, a strong wind blew through the tree and softly the little leaf fell to the ground.  He was there but an instant, and then he felt the palm of God's hand holding him.  God smiled at the extraordinary little leaf and said, "I have prepared a special tree just for you.  It is in the middle of a beautiful garden.  As God carried the little leaf through the garden, the leaf was amazed at the spectacular flowers all around them.
"The flowers up here are astonishing!" said the little leaf.
God smiled and said, "Those aren't just flowers. Those are all the prayers you offered."
"They are?" exclaimed the little leaf, "They are so beautiful!"
"I couldn't agree more," answered God.
"I never realized my prayers were that special."
"My dear little one, loving and praying for others is one of the most extraordinary things anyone could do!" Then God placed the little leaf in the tallest tree in the garden, and the little leaf was happier than he ever dreamed he would be.

Reclaim the Name

Well I was not disappointed.  This week's Confirmation mass was beautiful.  I really enjoyed Bishop Battersby's homily. Towards the end of mass, Bishop Battersby gave the candidates some wonderful advice that I wanted to share with you as well. He said God’s name is holy and we need to reclaim the name. He said Jesus’ enemies use his name like a swear word, but we are not His enemies, we are His friends. We should remember that.
I couldn’t agree more. I hate hearing people use God’s name in vain. It hurts me to hear it, so I can only imagine the pain God must feel.  Whenever I hear God’s name disrespected I quickly pray, “Blessed be the name of the Lord!”
Reclaim the name.  Will this be challenging?  You bet. So who’s up to the challenge?  Let’s give them something to talk about.

Out of Control

At our church we will be celebrating the sacrament of Confirmation this week.  I love the Confirmation mass!  The liturgy and the music poetically highlight the powerful love of the Holy Spirit.  It is so easy to be completely overwhelmed with joy during the celebration.
A few days ago, I was creating a Confirmation bulletin board.for the mass.  As I carried my crafting supplies into church, my folder with the flames of the Holy Spirit kept falling open.  I bent down and quickly picked up the "Holy Spirit" and put it back in the folder.  A few minutes later, I accidentally spilled the folder again.  Initially, I was annoyed as I bent down and to pick everything up again.  "Seriously, Susan, what is your problem today?" I thought to myself.  Then I smiled as I realized, "You can't keep the Holy Spirit neatly contained, you have let the Spirit free."
Confirmation isn't just a wonderful mass of special memories that we place in a scrapbook or picture frame.  Confirmation is the continuation of an incredible adventure with the Holy Spirit.  We would be all be wise to ask the Holy Spirit to direct each of our steps, and remember not to be "the one in-control" all the time.  Generously allow the Spirit to spill forth from you and follow His inspiration.

All Souls Day

Each life is important.
      Every soul is precious.
Remember to pray for the holy souls
       Who have gone before us.
           Especially today.
                  They need our prayers.
          Our prayers can touch them,
Just as their prayers can touch us.

Celebrating the Saint's Stories

Have you ever read a really good book and found yourself both happy and sad when you finished, because you don't want the story to end? I sometimes feel this way when I read about the lives of the saints. I get so immersed in their story, that I don't want it to end.  And the "good news" is their story hasn't ended, the saints are still very actively building up the Kingdom. They have seen God face to face, and they want to share this joy with us! They want to intercede for us.
Do yourself a favor and start to build an everlasting friendship with the saints. Call out to them. Learn from them.  Follow their footsteps.  Follow a trail that has already been blazed by a soul filled with the Holy Spirit, because it will lead you directly to God.
Today, let us celebrate the beauty of a life devoted to God.  Let us celebrate the beauty of God's love. Let us remember that the grace to become a saint was given to each of us at our Baptism. Let us live lives that inspire others to follow Christ. Let us live so that the last sentence of our life reads,"and they lived happily ever after."

It's Going To Be Sweet!

Today on all Hallow's Eve, the neighborhoods will be filled with kids chanting "Trick or Treat" as their bags get heavier with candy.  I have passed this fun tradition down to my children as well.  But it got me thinking....instead of going trick-or-treating, what if I had taught my children to say, "Bless and guide" as we remembered as many saints as we could from 6-8pm?  Would we be amazed at how generous the saints were to us?  Would we sort out all our blessings and talk about our favorites? Would we trade and share their words of wisdom with each other? Would our lives be completely different?
I hope you all enjoy the festivities of today, but more importantly, I hope you remember how much more important, celebrating the festivities of tomorrow will be.  I hope you find attending mass on All Saints Day to be even sweeter than a bag of candy. God is gathering us all around the family table tomorrow,  don't miss out on the big family reunion! See you there!

Vacationing With God #13- The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

As I walked up the steps to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C., I could feel my  excitement growing.  I was so thrilled to be back again!  Thirteen years ago I had walked up these same steps with my parents and husband and had consecrated my heart and life to Jesus, through Mary.  At the time, I thought I was making a pilgrimage to this beautiful shrine as a sign of my love for Mary.  What I have since realized, is that this act was just the beginning of my pilgrimage with Mary.  A pilgrimage that has encountered challenges, pain, and suffering, as well as moments of joy, growth and love.  I asked Mary to dwell in my heart; day by day, little lesson by little lesson, she has been teaching me how to draw closer to the heart of Jesus.
If you have a chance to visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, you will not be disappointed.  It is the largest shrine in the United States. There is a beautiful cathedral on the main floor and the basilica has over 80 little chapels as well.  You could spend hours visiting the many different chapels filled with artwork dedicated to Mary and her loving influences upon the world throughout history.  It would be difficult to leave this shrine without being touched by Mary's heart.  I think a visit to the basilica could best be summed up by two little prayers from St. Teresa of Calcutta, "Lend me your heart, dear Mother" and "Keep me in your most pure heart."

Thank You!

I know it's hard to believe, but sometimes I think we all forget to simply tell God, "Thank you."  We are often too focused on the past or worried about the future, and we forget to be happy in the present moment.   God is always with us.  That thought alone should completely make our day.  Today, let's push away our own expectations of how God could make our lives better, and let's just sit and smile knowing that God is beside us and that He is on our side.  Thank God for all the ways He has blessed you in your life, and then thank Him for all the blessings He has bestowed upon you that you never recognized.  God works in big and little ways in our life, and we should be generously shouting and whispering, "Thank you for loving me so much."

Did You See That?!

My dog and I were out taking our usual walk through the neighborhood when I noticed it.  A large picture of Jesus laughing while He is holding the devil in a choke hold displayed on a neighbor's front porch.  I have never seen anything like it. I couldn't help staring, it just drew me in. "I would love to know the story behind that picture," I thought to myself.  Day after day, I would only pass by and wonder, until the day I saw a sign that said "Garage Sale."
"Hello," I said as my daughter and I walked towards the garage.
"Oh, we were just about to close up for the day," a very pleasant woman said. "But you can go ahead and look if you want."
Briefly, we looked around before I asked, "I couldn't help but notice the large picture of Jesus on your front porch, could I ask you about it?"
Just then a car pulled into the driveway.  The woman smiled.  "That's my husband pulling up.  He's the one who painted it!"
I ended up having a wonderful conversation with this couple.  The husband told me that while he was out walking his two dogs, he was given this vision and he painted it himself.  "Wow, that's amazing!" I said.  "What does the picture mean to you?"
The gentleman told me that it demonstrated that "Jesus has defeated the devil.  We all need to remember that."
His wife said, "Some people have told us they don't believe in the devil.  And I tell them that's their choice not to believe, but that doesn't change the truth."
We continued to talk for a good fifteen minutes about faith, and he revealed that he has been a minister for the past 30 years.  I asked if I could take a picture of the painting for my blog and he smiled and said, "Go ahead." He told me that he gets a kick out of watching cars pull up in front of the house and take pictures.
As I walked back home, I thought about how amazing God is and how He uniquely inspires each of us.  We all need to share our stories and experiences of God.  We need to add God to more of our conversations we have with each other.  We need to remember that God is always in our midst--even when we are out walking our dogs.

Our Lady of Fatima

Today we celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the miracle at Fatima!  I would like to encourage everyone to find their own special way to celebrate the message of Fatima, because it is as important today as it was 100 years ago.  If you are not familiar with the messages and miracle of Fatima, I would strongly encourage you to read this touching story of three young children devoted to their faith and our Holy Mother Mary.  I hope it inspires you to pray the Rosary and consecrate your own heart to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  Peace in this world is attainable if we give our hearts to Mary and allow her to lead us to her Holy Son, Jesus.  Ave Maria!

The Gift of Faith

One morning the angel Gabriel came to a small New England town.  He had been asked to deliver three very special presents to three individuals.  As he entered the large public building, he opened the second door on the right and stepped inside.  He smiled at the three individuals gathered around a small conference table.  "Good morning!" Gabriel began, "I want to thank you for meeting with me today."
Ron was the first to speak, "Actually, we have no idea why we are here.  Each of us received instructions stating it was imperative we arrive promptly for a 9:00 am meeting, but we were not told what this meeting was even about."
Gabriel smiled and said, "Please allow me to introduce myself.  I am Gabriel and I have brought a special present for each of you from God."
The three exchanged a look of confusion and frustration.  "I'm sure this if a funny joke to someone, but I am a very busy person and I don't have time for such nonsense," declared Ron.
"Please," began Gabriel, "This is no joke.  God has asked me to deliver these gifts.  They are a gift of faith.  They come with the instructions 'Trust me and believe.  Love, God.'"  Gabriel handed a box to each individual, and then vanished before their eyes.
The three individuals were speechless as they tried to comprehend Gabriel's sudden disappearance.  After a few minutes, Ron broke the silence as he looked at what appeared to be similar presents in front of each of them.  "Well, I guess I'll be the first to unwrap this gift of faith."  He cautiously unwrapped and then opened the small, flat box.  Inside was a very plain, old-looking brown vest.  Reluctantly, he put it on.  It felt uncomfortable and it definitely was not his style.  It seemed so out-dated.  He was pretty sure most of his friends would laugh at him if he ever wore it.  He shook his head and said, "This must be some kind of a joke.  I really don't have time for such nonsense."  Annoyed, he quickly took the vest off and set it on the table before leaving the room.
Alicia was a little more timid as she began to open her package.  She discovered the same brown vest in her present.  She smiled at her present from God and then carefully began to wrap it up again.
"Aren't you going to try it on?" asked Tony.
"No, I don't think so.  I want it to look perfect when I show it off to my friends."  Alicia brought the vest home and placed it in a special display case.  A few times a year she would bring it out and demonstrate it to her friends.  She enjoyed the fact that she could impress her friends with it.  Her special gift of faith was encased and untouched for the rest of her life.
Alone, Tony unwrapped his gift of faith.  He, too, received a brown vest. He repeated the instructions from God as he put the vest on.  "Trust me and believe.  Trust me and believe."  Tony really didn't know what to think about his gift.  He wrapped his arms across his chest and said, "God, thank you for this gift of faith.  I'm not exactly sure what I am supposed to do with it, but I trust you will help me figure it out."
Tony walked out of the room wearing the vest.  He bought his first bible that day and began reading.  As the days turned into weeks and years, Tony cherished his gift of faith.  He discovered that it protected him during stormy times, and he stayed warm when others were cold.  Surprisingly, he could share his gift of faith and wrap it around others who needed comfort, and yet it always seemed to fit him perfectly.  Day after day, Tony thanked God for His special gift, and God and Tony became close friends.
In time Tony realized that the special gift God had given him that day had nothing to do with the brown vest.  It was Tony's trust in God's ways that allowed Tony's faith to penetrate every aspect of his life. On his last day, God came to Tony's side.  He smiled as He looked at Tony's vest.  God gave Tony a big hug and said, "Tony the amount of time, love, and trust you "in-vested" in your faith has brought me joy.  Come on, I'm taking you home.  I can't wait to show you what I have prepared for you!"

Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

My love for the Rosary began in my late twenties after reading about the lives of different saints.  Each of the saints had a deep devotion to Mary and the Rosary.   They seemed to radiate with  joy, because they were walking through life with Mary.  Inside, I could feel my heart burning and changing as I read about their experiences.  I wanted to have that same experience.  I wanted to walk through life with Mary, too!
The Rosary is a chain of beads.  One Hail Mary connects us to the next, just as moments in our lives do the same.  We meditate on the mysteries of our faith, and in a sense, the mysteries of our lives.  We meditate on the painful and joyful moments Jesus and Mary experienced, so that we may begin to understand the pain and joy in our own lives.
With each Hail Mary, we pray that we may remain faithful in fulfilling God's Will.  We pray that we may have that same great love and trust in God that Mary had in her life.  Step by step, bead by bead, Mary shows us how to give our hearts and lives to God.  We pray the words "Hail Mary" and Mary responds with the words, "Love my Son," and bead by bead, she guides us.  As we hold the Rosary beads in our hands, Mary places the beads that are dangling in her own hands, and then gently pulls us closer and closer to her Son.  The Rosary is the path that leads to God's heart.

A Gentle Loving Voice

I found myself running a little ahead of schedule a few days ago, as I was driving into work from a different direction.  Out of the corner of my eye I saw a beautiful statue of Mary.  I quickly glanced at the time and then turned my car around.  I just had to be with Mary.  There she was waiting just for me in front of an empty church.  I walked up to the statue and found a vacant bench welcoming my visit.  Spending those few unplanned moments with Mary was such a treat.  After a day of running around, I enjoyed just peacefully sitting with her.  I was so grateful that Mary had caught my attention and called me closer.
October is dedicated to Mary.  I hope you hear the gentle, loving voice of Mary this month.  I hope, minute by minute, your heart expands with joy, peace, and love.  Let's be honest, couldn't you use a little more love in your life?  Mom is really looking forward to a few heart-to-heart moments with you.  Be sure not to miss her call this month, she has so much to share with you.

Let's Give Them Something To Talk About

A mile down the street, they are building a new church.  It's amazing how many people are involved and all the necessary equipment.  My family and I like to  comment on it as we go by.
"Hey did you see how much they did to day?"
"Wow, it's bigger than I thought it would be!"
"It looks like it's going to be really nice."
This got rethinking....I wonder if the saints in heaven look at all of us and say the same things?  Are they impressed with how we are building the Church here on earth?  Did they foresee how big the Church would become?  Are they praying that more people actively get involved?
This week I propose we give the saints something to talk about.  Let's really show God how much we love Him!  Make a special point to build up His Church--whether it be something big or something small.  Think about it, pray about it, and then act on it.  Every single one of us is needed for this project, and I for one would like to hear God say, "Well done!  I always knew the Church would be amazing!"

Correcting Our Vision

Unfortunately, we all make mistakes.  At times our vision is a little blurry.  We may fail to notice the warning signs, or we choose the easy path instead of the right path. Lies can get us into a slippery situation and before we know it, we are in a bad place.

This is how the world handles mistakes:
"Hello?  I've been in a car accident and I will have to file a claim."
" I will need your policy number and can you tell me what happened so I can determine who's fault it was?
"Ok, so this is what happened......."
"Well that was totally your fault."
  "I am aware."
"I'm going to have to send out an adjuster to determine just how much damage you have done."
" Is this going to cause my rates to increase?"
  "Yes.  This was your fault."

This is how God handles mistakes:
  "Father, I have sinned."
"Child, I absolve you of all your sins.  Now go and sin no more."

I was thinking about how fortunate we are to have a merciful Lord who forgives our accidents.  He doesn't make us pay for our mistakes, even though He knows the damage we have done. He looks at us with loving eyes and pulls us close to His heart.  He whispers "I forgive you" and strengthens us with His blessings.  He wipes the slate clean and allows us a fresh start.  God is so amazing and so generous, I'm confused why anyone would avoid going to Reconciliation.  If it's been a while for you, consider stopping by God's house this weekend.  He never closes the door to forgiveness.

A Cry from the Heart

Today while you pray, give your mind and lips a rest.  What is your heart aching to tell Jesus?  Jesus knows what your heart longs for..... do you?

I Hope It's Just a Phase

My son is going through a phase (at least I hope it's a phase) where it is completely embarrassing to be seen with his mother.  He doesn't mind talking to me when we are in our house.  He doesn't mind me feeding him or buying him things.  It's fine when it's just us, but he would prefer not to be seen with me in public.
I was thinking how ridiculous this was when something suddenly occurred to me.  How often do people have that same attitude towards God?  I mean sure He is our Father and we love Him, but how many of us prefer to keep our relationship with God something hidden from the public eye?  It's okay to love God in our own houses and in our churches, but do we really want to be seen caring about God in public?  Do we really want our friends and neighbors to know how much we love God?  Do we introduce Him to our friends or do we just kind of ignore His Presence?  What did God do that was so embarrassing?
My son needed a ride to work the other day.  As we pulled into the parking lot my son was quick to turn the volume down on my radio.  "Hey, why did you turn it down?" I asked.
"I think I should get of the car in silence," he answered.
I smiled and said, "Are you embarrassed someone might find out your Mom listens to Christian rock?"
He looked at me and said, "I think that is something you should keep a secret."
My smile grew wider and I said, "I have no intention of keeping it a secret!  I love Jesus!" and I turned the volume back up as my son quickly closed the door.  I'm not embarrassed to hang out with the Father.  I think He is awesome!
The question I would like to pose is this:  Are you embarrassed to love God in public?  I hope your answer was "No", and if it wasn't,  pray that you outgrow this phase.  Have a great weekend!
