Vacationing With God #11- San Fernando Cathedral, San Antonio, Texas

I wanted to share with you my experience at the San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas.  I had traveled there in early December.  The Cathedral was beautiful inside and out, and I'm sure I will be sharing many of the interior pictures in the future.  Today, though, I wanted to share what occurred outside the cathedral.  Projected on the facade of the cathedral was an approximate 24 minute projection mapping show demonstrating the rich history of San Antonio.  It was a stunning visual delight as the cathedral changed from one scene to the next perfectly accompanied by music.  The show itself was not "spiritual", but it demonstrated the struggles and victories that this cathedral and it's parishioners had witnessed since 1750.  Through the joys and sorrows of life, God is always in our midst.

This is the San Fernando Cathedral before the show begins.

Let the show begin...

The Road Less Traveled-Twelth Edition

(This fictional Advent story begins on post date November 28.)

The tightness lasted for only a minute. Mary looked at Joseph,  "I'm fine. I have never had a feeling like that before.  It might have been a contraction.  It happened so fast,  I'm not sure.  Let's wait a few minutes and see if it happens again."
Joseph began pacing.  What should they do?  He had relatives in Bethlehem.  Jerusalem was still close, but very crowded.  Would there even be a place to stay in Jerusalem?  Joseph paced back and forth keeping his eyes on Mary.  "Anything?  Do you think it's happening?"
"Joseph, please, sit down.  Everything is fine.  This is all new to me as well.  Let's join our  hands and pray for guidance.  Surely, the Lord has a plan.  Let us ask to understand and cooperate with His Will."  As the couple prayed,  a peace came over both of them.  Joseph no longer felt anxious.  They prayed for awhile before Mary spoke again.  "Joseph, I think we should continue towards Bethlehem."
  "Are you sure?"
"Yes.  I have not had any more tightness.  I have heard these things can happen days before the baby comes.  I know that the Lord will watch over us.  The Messiah will be born according to God's Plan."
"Mary, promise me you will let me know if you feel any more signs."
  "You have my word."
Joseph and Mary continued their journey towards Bethlehem.  They had hours in front of them, and Joseph wanted the donkey to keep a steady pace.  As they traveled, Mary and Joseph remained in peace and prayer as they recited psalms and sang praise to God.
When they arrived in Bethlehem the city was filled with people everywhere.  "I have never seen the town like this before," Joseph exclaimed.  Joseph decided to register for the census first.  After inquiring where the census was being taken, Joseph lead Mary through the crowds to a large public building in the center of town. The line was very long, and the sun was beginning to set by the time they had finished registering.
"Now my dear wife, we must find a place to stay."  As Joseph said this, Mary felt another tightening from her back to her abdomen.  This time it was much stronger.
Mary grabbed Joseph's arm, "Joseph! I need to sit down."
Joseph felt the strength in Mary's grab and understood the urgency in her voice.  It was happening!  Joseph led Mary through the crowd and found a place for her to sit.  "Mary...is it time?" Joseph asked already knowing the answer.
Mary nodded her head yes.  "I think this is the beginning."
Joseph looked around at the crowded streets.  "Mary, I need to find us a place. I don't want to leave you, but I don't want you in the crowds either.  I could move more swiftly by myself.  I could quickly find us a place and then come back to you.  Could you stay by yourself for a few minutes?"
"I'm fine, Joseph.  I think it would be better if I stayed sitting as well. I will immerse myself in prayer until you return."
Joseph looked anxiously at Mary.   "Don't worry,  I'll be back soon."  Joseph kissed Mary's hand and said, "I love you."
Mary smiled and said."I love you, too.  Go, I'll be fine."
Joseph began knocking on the nearest doors.  He begged for a place for them to stay, but no one had an empty room.  Desperate he went a little further away and knocked on the doors of relatives and friends.  The answer was the same.  No one had an empty room.  Large groups of people were staying in the small homes available.  Mary needed privacy.  He would not humiliate her.
Several times Joseph returned to the spot where Mary was sitting to see how she was doing. Mary remained in a state of peace even though the contractions were becoming steady.  Joseph on the other hand, was frantic.  He desperately knocked on every door, begging for a room.  "My Lord, show your servant the way." He prayed over and over.  "Please allow me to keep Mary and Your Son safe.  Please help me."
As he walked away from the last inn, a man yelled after him. "Hey, I have a field not far from here.  There is a small area of shelter you could stay.  It's not much, but you would have privacy."
Joseph quickly went back for Mary.  He was ashamed that this is what he had to offer his wife.  Mary deserved much better.  The Messiah, was going to be born in a field among the sheep.  He had failed his Lord .....and his wife.  Joseph ran as quickly as the crowd would allow him to find Mary still sitting and praying.
"Mary, forgive me.  I cannot find a single room in this town.  I can only offer us an abandoned shelter in a field just outside of town.  I'm so sorry.  I have failed you."
Mary looked sweetly at Joseph and said, "Joseph you have not failed.  You have searched and searched for where the Messiah was to be born.  You abandoned yourself to the Will of God, and now we will let Him lead us to this desired spot.  Joseph, pray with me. 'The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.  In green pastures you let me graze; to safe waters you lead me; you restore my strength.  You guide me along the right path for the sake of your name.  Even when I walk through dark valley, I fear no harm for you are at my side; your rod and staff give me courage.  You set a table before me as my enemies watch; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.  Only goodness and love will pursue me all the days of my life; I will dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come.'
Together, the holy couple allowed God's Will to guide their steps as they headed for the field. Once they arrived, Joseph searched the area.  He found an area carved out of stone that must have been used as shelter for the animals.  Joseph found some materials to start a fire.  Night had already fallen,  it was dark and soon would be cold.  As Joseph started the fire, Mary knelt down and praised God.  This would be the holy place where the Messiah would be born.  Once the fire was started, they could see around the shelter and they began to prepare an area for Mary to lay down.  Mary spotted a manger and asked Joseph to clean it well so that they would have a bed for the baby to lie in.  Exhausted but filled with joy,  Mary allowed herself to rest in the area they had prepared.
Together, Mary and Joseph prayed and praised God.  As they prayed a brilliant light filled the room, angels could be heard singing, and they were wrapped up in ecstatic prayer.  It was in these moments of perfect love and union with God, that the Savior of the World was born.
Mary wrapped her new born son in swaddling clothes and held Him close to her body for warmth.  As she gazed at the beautiful face of Jesus, tears of joy slid down her face.  Her heart filled with love like she had never experienced before.  For so long, she had prayed for this moment, and now that it was here, it was more glorious than she could have ever imagined.
God became man!  The thought was pure joy, and the reality was a love so great and encompassing, that the earth would celebrate this moment until the end of time.  Mary and Joseph allowed God to wrap them in His love and glory, and together they prayed that people everywhere would open their hearts wide to God, so that Jesus could fill them with His love as well.

The Road Less Traveled-Eleventh Edition

(This fictional Advent story begins on post dated Nov. 28)

In the morning Joseph greeted Mary with a smile.  "How are you feeling?" Joseph inquired.
"Much better than last night.  I was so tired yesterday.  I'm glad I turned in early last night.  I hope I did not appear rude to your friends."
"Of course you didn't.  In fact Simon and his wife were very surprised that you have been able to travel for so many days.  Simon says Joanna goes to bed early every night and she is not as far along as you.  Come, they have prepared a breakfast for us before we leave."
Mary and Joseph enjoyed the simple breakfast prepared for them.  Simon was obviously a very good friend to Joseph.  Mary enjoyed listening to the two men talk.  Mary only knew of Joseph's acquaintances in Nazareth,  she realized that there was so much more to discover about her husband.  That thought alone made her smile.  As Mary looked at Joseph during the conversation, she again thought about them becoming a family very soon.  It was hard not to think about that.  Mary wondered if their life would remain relatively the same or if things would be completely different.
Simon walked outside with Joseph and Mary to say good bye.  "I will miss you my friend.  Please stop by on your way back home if you are able.  Just think, next year when we celebrate Passover, we will all be parents.  I look forward to our children playing with each other."  Simon smiled proudly.  "Mary, please know that you are family to me.  You are always welcome to stay here.  If the trip home is too much, you could stay with us until the child is born."
Mary smiled and said, "Thank you, Simon,  for your kindness.  I am grateful that Joseph is blessed with your friendship.  I too, look forward to our children playing together one day, and I will pray that the Lord will send many blessings upon your family."
Joseph was in a very good mood as they began their journey towards Jerusalem.  It was good to see Simon again, and Mary was looking much better after a night of rest.  He hoped today would not be as difficult for Mary.  Joseph noticed that there were definitely more travelers on the road as they got closer to Jerusalem, and most were traveling at a faster rate.  He did his best to distract Mary with stories about his childhood in Bethlehem, but it was obvious that Mary's back was hurting again and she was growing tired.
As they went through the gates to Jerusalem, they were instantly overwhelmed with the sights and sounds of a bustling city.  Even though Joseph knew the city well, it was difficult to maneuver the streets crowded with people.  Joseph remembered Simon's warnings of thieves and chose a path that was not as direct, but somewhat less crowded.  He had hoped they would be able to sit and rest awhile once they got to Jerusalem, but he no longer felt this was a wise decision.  They made a small stop to buy some bread and fruit and decided to continue until they were through the city.  They found a quieter spot just outside Jerusalem to eat lunch and allow Mary some time to relax her aching back.  As she went to stand up, she had a strange tightness travel from her back to her abdomen.  Joseph noticed Mary place her hands on her stomach.
His eyes grew wide, "Is everything alright?"

The Road Less Traveled-Tenth Edition

(This fictional Advent Story begins on post Nov 28).

Joseph stayed for a few minutes watching Mary sleep before he returned to talk with Simon.  She looked so peaceful while she slept.  She didn't appear to be in pain anymore.  Joseph gently kissed her forehead and then quietly left the room.
As we allow the young Mary of Nazareth to sleep, we will travel to encounter Mary on a future path.

Mary walked into the hospital room and saw Cheryl resting comfortably.  Many years had gone by since their Advent meeting in the town's square.  Mary saw Cheryl's youngest daughter, Emily, sleeping in a chair next to her bed.  Emily was married with three children of her own now.  Mary looked around the room and saw a beautiful manger beside a large Poinsettia plant.  As Mary took a step closer to gaze at the infant Jesus in the manger, Emily woke up.
"Oh, hello," Emily said as she tried to place the woman's face with a name.  "I guess Mom and I both drifted off to sleep.  Mom had a difficult time last night, but she seemed to improve throughout the day."  Emily wondered which of her mom's friends this woman was.  Her mom had so many friends, it was difficult to remember all of them.  Mary continued to lovingly glance at the manger set.  "Isn't that manger set beautiful?" Emily asked.  "Mom insisted we bring it from her house when the doctors said she would have to stay here a few more days.  This manger set has been prominently displayed in our house since I was a little girl.  I remember the night Mom came home from shopping and told us kids to gather around her as she unwrapped the greatest gift of Christmas.  It became a tradition for our family ever since.  Every year mom would unwrap the box with love and announce, 'Never forget, that baby Jesus is the greatest gift of Christmas.'
Mary smiled, "That is a wonderful way to get ready for Christmas."
"I have always enjoyed listening to my mom tell the story of Jesus' birth.  Each year she would end the story with a question for us kids to think about during Advent.  It is one of my favorite Christmas traditions, and now I try to be just like her, and do the same with my kids."
"Your mother has a wonderful love for the Christ child.  Many people get so busy with the idea of Christmas, that they never discover  the true meaning.  Sadly, the path of pure joy leading to the Christ child is the road less traveled these days."  Mary and Emily continued to chat for several more minutes before Mary said, "I heard your Mom can't find her Rosary."
"That's true.  How did you know that?  We've looked through her house and can't find it.  She loves to pray the Rosary, especially when she is out walking.  We're afraid it may have fallen out of her coat pocket when she fell," Emily explained.
"I was hoping your Mom might like to borrow mine until she is able to find hers.  I know how important praying the Rosary is to her."  Mary handed a small jewelry size box with a single bow on top to Emily.
Emily smiled.  "That is so thoughtful of you."
Mary returned the smile and said, "You remind me so much of your ancestral grandmother Sarah.  You have her smile.  Merry Christmas, Emily, remember to tell your mother how much we are looking forward to celebrating Christmas mass with her."
"Merry Christmas to you, too," Emily said as Mary walked out of the room.
The next morning Cheryl woke up feeling better.  She smiled at Emily.  How fortunate she was to have children that stayed with her around the clock.  Cheryl's breakfast arrived a few minutes later, and while she was eating, Emily woke up.
"Hi, Mom," Sarah said groggily, "How are you feeling?"
"I am actually starting to feel much better.  I don't think I will be spending Christmas here.  I'm sure I will be getting out soon."
"That's what your friend said last night, too," informed Sarah.
"Did someone come visit me last night?  I don't remember anyone coming..."
"Yes, actually, we were both sleeping when she came in, but I woke up when she was looking at the manger set."
  "Oh, who was it?"
"Ummm, I don't know her name... I think she was one of your friends from church.  She knew you couldn't find your Rosary, and she wanted you to borrow hers.  Let me see.....where did I put it?"  Emily began to search through her bag next to the chair.  "Here it is.  Here, Mom, she left this for you."  Emily handed her Mom the small box.
Cheryl's eyes grew wide.  The box looked all too familiar to her.  Cheryl's fingers instinctively touched the heart necklace she wore every day.  "What did the woman look like?" inquired Cheryl.
"Well....she had brown hair that fell a little past her shoulders that was covered up with some type of scarf.  I don't think she wore any make up, but she had beautiful skin, and was very attractive.  She was soft spoken and very polite, yet she had this warmth to her as she talked."
Cheryl carefully opened the box and saw the most beautiful rosary she had ever seen.  As she picked up the Rosary, she saw a strip of gold paper underneath it.  Cheryl's heart began to pound faster as she picked up the gold piece of paper.  It read exactly the same as the strip of paper she had read so many years ago, but with one difference--one word was added.  "This Christmas, let your heart continue to be filled with the mystery of the Incarnation. God became man for you."
Tears began to stream down Cheryl's face.  "Did she say anything more?"
"You still don't know who she is?  Mom she knew me.  She knew my name.  She said, 'Merry Christmas Emily.' She told me I had some great ancestral grandmother's smile, which made no sense because she looked like she was my age.  Oh, and she said, 'Tell your Mom my son and I will be looking forward to celebrating Christmas Mass with her again.'
Cheryl smiled a smile that took years off her face.  She looked at the beautiful Rosary in her hand, and said, "I know for sure who she is now."

The Road Less Traveled- Ninth Edition

(This fictional Advent story begins on post November 28.)

Mary woke up to two round, beautiful brown eyes looking at her.  "Good morning, Mary!  I slept by you last night!" Sarah announced.
"I know.  I woke up and you were curled up right next to me," Mary said with a smile.
"Joseph went to get your donkey ready.  Don't go, Mary.  Please stay." Sarah pleaded as she held Mary's hand.
"Sarah, I wished I could stay with you, but we have to get to Bethlehem soon.  I'm not as fast as Joseph right now, because the baby is getting bigger.  I'm actually pretty slow."
"But I'm going to miss you!"
Mary took Sarah into her arms and gave her a hug.  "Sarah, I have something for you."  Mary slipped a beaded bracelet off her wrist.  "This is a very special bracelet that my mother gave me when I was about your age.  She told me to remember that the Lord gave me two hands to pray with and two hands to help others.  I want you to have it, and that way we will always be connected through our prayers."
Sarah's smile grew wide across her face as Mary slipped the bracelet onto her.  "I love it! I'm going to show Mama!"
Mary slowly stood up and tried to stretch her aching back as much as she was able.  As she placed her hands on her stomach, she felt a little kick.  "Good morning, my sweet son, are you ready for another day of traveling?" she whispered.  Mary felt a heavier pressure in her back today.  She wondered how much time was left before her precious son would be born.
Mary found Joseph outside by the donkey.  Joseph smiled as Mary approached and said, "Are you ready to get going?  I think we will be close to Jerusalem by the end of the day.  I have a good friend who lives a two hour walk from Jerusalem.  The next part of the terrain will be much more difficult.  How are you feeling?  Is it okay for us to continue?"
"Don't worry about me, I am ready to travel again."
Mary and Joseph went back inside to say goodbye to the family and thank them for allowing them to stay.  The children all gave Mary a hug and promised they would remember what she had taught them yesterday.  Sarah held onto Mary.  "I don't want you to go."
"Sarah, I will pray that the Lord will always bless you and your family.  Will you pray for me as well?"
"Yes.  Every time I look at these beads," she pointed to her new bracelet, "I will pray for you and your baby."  Mary and Sarah hugged one last time before Joseph helped Mary onto the donkey and they continued their journey.
Today's traveling was definitely more difficult for Mary. Joseph's worries began to grow.  Mary was growing tired much faster today.  Joseph recognized Mary's need to stop and rest more often today. As the day progressed, Joseph wondered if they would even be able to make it to his friend's house today.
As dusk approached, Joseph saw the familiar house in the distant. "Mary, we are almost there!  I can't wait for you to meet Simon.  We have been friends for many years now.  I think you will enjoy his company.  He has been married for a few years.  His wife has always been very kind."
Joseph walked confidently towards the door with Mary at his side.  Simon opened the door and instantly smiled when he saw Joseph.  "Joseph, my good friend, I am so happy to see you!  This is a wonderful surprise," he said as he threw his arms around Joseph.  Then Simon smiled at Mary and looked at Joseph with a raised eyebrow.
"Simon, I would like to introduce you to my wife, Mary," Joseph declared proudly.
"Welcome to my home, Mary!  Joseph is my dear friend and I am happy he has found himself a wife.  Is she from a good family Joseph?"
Joseph smiled and said, "The Lord has blessed me with a very good woman and soon to be mother.  I believe there is no man who feels more blessed than I."
"You must both be tired.  Please come sit down and let's catch up on each other's lives. I, too, have a surprise to share." Simon quickly left the room and came back with his wife, Joanna.  "We are expecting our first child as well!  Let us all celebrate the blessings we have received this year!"
Mary helped Joanna prepare a meal for everyone, while Joseph and Simon continued to enjoy each other's company.  Throughout dinner, Simon described the number of people traveling towards Jerusalem.  "The city is very crowded right now.  People are very upset with this whole census idea.  Herod has secret police everywhere reporting to him.  Be very careful, Joseph.  Herod has a temper and has been known to act completely irrational.  Also, keep in mind that the street thieves are out in greater numbers right now.  They are targeting all of the travelers."  Joseph nodded as he took in Simon's advice.  "Joseph, be careful in Bethlehem as well.  I have heard even the streets there are crowded."
Joseph kept an eye on Mary throughout dinner.  She looked very tired and uncomfortable.  When the meal was over, Joseph insisted Mary lay down and rest.  Joseph did his best to make Mary comfortable.  Her feet and ankles looked swollen.  "Mary perhaps I should leave you here and travel to Bethlehem myself.  I am very worried.  How are you and the baby?  Are you feeling any signs yet?"
"Joseph, I am just very tired.  I do not wish to be apart from you on this journey.  The baby and I just need to rest for the night.  Do not worry, we are fine.  Go and enjoy some time with Simon.  Please, allow me to turn in early tonight. I just need a good night of sleep."  Mary then closed her eyes and quickly drifted off to sleep.

The Road Less Traveled-Eigth Encounter

(This fictional Advent Story begins on post Nov 28.)

As they approached the nearest home, Joseph told Mary to rest a minute while he inquired if they could stay.  Joseph knocked several times before a man finally came to the door.
"My wife and I are traveling to Bethlehem for the census and we are need of a place to stay for the night."
"We don't really have much room," the man answered.
"Please sir, my wife is with child and I do not think she can travel any farther."
The man sighed.  "We have just received a visitor a few hours ago, the only room I have left is were the children sleep."
"We will take any space that is available.  Please, I am desperate.  My wife and soon to be child are my whole life.  I can not risk their safety."  Joseph looked anxiously at Mary.  It would be dark soon and he knew Mary could not travel any farther.  "Sir, I am a skilled carpenter.  I will gladly work the evening if you would allow my wife a place to rest."
"Well, that is an interesting idea.  I am behind on a few repair jobs....let me go inform my wife."
The man returned in a few minutes with his wife and allowed Mary and Joseph to stay for the night.  As promised, Joseph began helping the man repairing a shed in the back of his property.  Mary sat down outside to rest for awhile.  She was very tired and her lower back was aching.  She suffered silently, though, because she felt terrible that Joseph would have to work a few more hours before he could rest.  Mary closed her eyes and asked the Lord to bestow extra blessings on Joseph and also to bless the family they were staying with.  While she was praying, she suddenly heard whispers and giggles.
"See, I told you she wasn't sleeping," boasted five year old Benjamin.
"Your very pretty," said his six year old sister Daniella.  "Did you know your face shines when you close your eyes like that?"
Mary smiled.  "No, I didn't, because my eyes are closed."  Mary and the kids started laughing.
"Why were you sitting with your eyes closed if your weren't sleeping?" Benjamin inquired.
" I was praying.  Do you like to pray?"
"Um...sometimes," Benjamin admitted as he looked down at the ground.
"He only does when Mamma and Papa make him.  He's not as good at it as I am.  I don't fidget and I don't smile either," shared Daniella.
Mary looked at Benjamin and said, "You know, the Lord likes it when you smile Benjamin.  He likes to see you be happy.  And you don't have to sit really still when you pray.  You could run across a field while praising God!'
  "You can?" questioned Benjamin.
"Sure.  Do you want to try it?"  Benjamin nodded yes.  "Ok, look up at the sky and tell the Lord, 'Thank you for this beautiful day, thank you for blessing me with Mamma and Papa and Daniella, and your little sister Sarah.  Thank the Lord for giving you strong legs so you can run fast, and thank Him for making you so smart!' Now run as fast as you can across the field giving all that praise to the Lord."  Benjamin took off running, praising God loudly with a big smile on his face.
"I want to try, too!" said Daniella, and she took off running to catch up with her brother.  The two children were soon laughing and thanking the Lord for everything.
Mary looked at three year old Sarah and said, "Do you want to join them?"
Sarah looked at Mary and said, "No, I just want to be by you and the baby in your tummy."
Mary smiled and said, "We like being by you, too."
Sarah sat down very close to Mary and laid her head down on her stomach and wrapped her little arms around Mary.  They both just sat there smiling and watching Benjamin and Daniella give praise to God.
Benjamin and Daniella ran and ran until they were completely exhausted. They came back smiling and out of breath.  "That was the most fun praying I ever had!  Can I pray like that tomorrow, too?" Benjamin asked.
"I think that would make God very happy," Mary answered.  "There are lots of ways to pray.  Would you like to learn some more?"
The children replied, "Yes!" and then gave Mary their full attention.  An hour almost went by before the children's mother joined them.
"Mamma, Mary is teaching us how to pray! Come listen, she is really good at it!" declared Daniella.
Daniella's mamma looked a little surprised as she sat down.  "Sarah, please don't lean on Mary like that, you might hurt her."
"I not hurting her  Mamma.  I love her baby.  He makes me feel good." Sarah confessed.
Mary smiled at Sarah and said, "It's fine.  She isn't hurting me."
Both the children and their mother listened as Mary talked about God's love and mercy and the promised Messiah. The children were full of questions and respectfully listened to all Mary had to say. The time seemed to go by very quickly and before they knew it the men had returned from working on the shelter tired and hungry. They all went inside to eat and rest for the night, and Papa was very impressed with Benjamin's prayer at dinner.

The Road Less Traveled-Seventh Encounter

(This fictional Advent story begins on post Nov. 28)

Mary and Joseph had another long day of travel ahead of them.  Joseph kept thinking of Ruth's parting words, "You need to take good care of that little one inside you.  Soon your whole life will be changed."  Joseph wondered how he would protect and provide for the Messiah.  With each step Joseph prayed with all his heart, "My Lord, guide me along this path.  My life is Yours.  Your Will is my desire.  Enlighten and strengthen me to carry out Your Plans.  Help me to keep Mary and Your Son safe from all harm."
"You have been very quiet, Joseph, have I done something to upset you?" Mary asked.
Joseph turned and flashed Mary a smile. "You have done nothing to upset me.  I was just praying that I could be the husband you deserve and be able to provide for both you and our soon to be son."
Mary slid off the donkey and reached for Joseph's hand, "Well that is a prayer I would like to offer as well.  I, too, hope that I will be the wife that you deserve, and that I will be a good mother as well."
Mary and Joseph stood facing each other, holding hands, and silently praying for God's Wisdom to fill their hearts and minds, so that His Will would be accomplished.  Strengthened by their prayers and renewed with love they continued to walk the many miles that still laid ahead of them.
As the day wore on, Joseph noticed Mary's walk was becoming much more difficult.  Although she never complained, He could tell Mary was very uncomfortable.  She was definitely getting closer to delivering.  Fortunately, Bethlehem was getting closer, too. If she could just make it there, he knew everything would be fine.  Finding a comfortable place to rest in Bethlehem would be easy.  That was his hometown and he knew lots of people there.  He would do everything he could to make up for the difficulties of the trip. Yes, Joseph was sure, everything would be better as soon as they arrived in Bethlehem.
As the sun began to slowly approach the horizon, Joseph began to look for another place to stay for the night. "Joseph, could we possibly sit and rest for a while?" Mary asked.
"Mary, I see some homes off in the distant. If we could make it there before the sun sets, we will be safe for the night.  I know you are tired.  Would you allow me to carry you the rest of the way?"
Mary started laughing.  "Well that would be very unfair to you.  I know you are strong, but you may have misjudged my size."
Joseph smiled and did his best to flex his muscles.  "My dear wife, I am stronger than you know, and I would consider it an honor to cross an entire desert carrying the Messiah and His mother in my arms."  Joseph dramatically bowed to Mary and then allowed his smile to reach her eyes.
Mary saw her smile reflected in Joseph's eyes.  He truly was a very good man. "My dear husband, I have noticed how hard the walk has been on your feet.  You have allowed me to ride on our donkey, and you have never taken a rest for yourself.  I could not bring myself to increase your burden. I can continue a few more miles, if it means an evening of rest."
"Should you change your mind, my offer still stands," Joseph tenderly offered.
Mary again smiled at Joseph and said, "I feel very blessed to have you in my life."

The Road Less Traveled-Sixth Encounter

(This fictional Advent story begins on post November 28.)

Mary and Joseph awoke early the next day eager to continue their journey.  As they made their way towards the door, they heard Ruth's voice.  "You're not leaving already are you?"
"Yes, we have truly appreciated your kindness, but we must travel as much as we can while their is daylight," Joesph explained.
Ruth walked across the room and gave Mary a hug.  "I want to thank you.  The baby slept through most of the night and then woke up hungry and nursed well for the first time.  I think it was your prayers last night.  I have never heard  anyone sing the psalms that way.  It was as if a part of heaven was touching the earth."
Mary just smiled and said, "Our Lord is always eager to pray with us. Praying brings me such joy, I was happy to share that joy with your family."
Ruth handed Mary a small bag.  "I have packed some fruit and bread for your trip.  You need to take good care of that little one inside you.  Soon your whole life will be changed."
Mary graciously accepted the gift Ruth offered to her Son.  It was just a small gesture, but neither Mary nor Jesus overlooked the love and generosity it contained.  As Mary and Joseph left their house, a multitude of blessings were bestowed upon Ruth and her family.  Their love for God grew stronger each day and peace reigned in their hearts.  Jesus gave Ruth a present as well.  Each night as she said her prayers, she could still hear Mary singing the psalms, and Ruth's heart would fill with joy as she sang along.

The Road Less Traveled-Fifth Encounter

(This fictional Advent story begins on post dated Nov 28.)
When Mary finished singing the psalm, the man quietly and gently took the peacefully sleeping child out of Mary's arms, and laid her down in her bed.  The man smiled and said, "Thank you for bringing peace to my household.  You must be so tired yourself, please let me offer you my bed."
"It is a very generous offer, but we can not impose.  You and your wife should get as much rest as you can.  Joseph and I will be content to sleep on the floor.  We appreciate you allowing us to stay for the night," Mary replied.
Joseph and Mary were both quite exhausted from the day's journey and they almost fell asleep immediately.  As we allow the young Mary of Nazareth to sleep, let us now encounter Mary on a present day path.

Mary slowly walked down a path in the middle of the town's square.  Night had just fallen and the trees decorated with shimmering lights looked very beautiful.  As she looked across the street, she saw other lights: "Christmas on Sale," "Celebrate the Season," "Buy the perfect Christmas present".  She saw people rushing in and out of the stores.  Mary sat down on a bench and remembered the birth of her Son.  God loved us so much, that He humbled himself to become one of us.  The mystery and the magnitude of such great love still overwhelmed Mary with tears of joy.  She closed her eyes and remembered the first time she held Jesus in her arms.  His face was so beautiful...
"Wow, I just got the deal of the century!" a woman exclaimed with excitement as she sat down next to Mary on the bench.  "I am exhausted.  Do you know how hard it is for a mother to get ready for Christmas?"  She set down a number of shopping bags and began to drink a coffee.  "I'm going to need this caffeine if I'm going to have the energy to keep going.  You must just be starting, I noticed you don't have any bags.  My kids Christmas lists are so long this year. I have to admit, I have put a pretty good dent into their lists already.  I can't wait to see how happy they are going to be when they open all their gifts.  It's going to be a great Christmas!  How about you, do you have any kids?"
Mary smiled and said, "Yes, I very much enjoy celebrating Christmas with my Son.  Christmas Mass is always so beautiful to me."
"I wish we had the time to go to mass, but there is always so much to do that day.  I always have my side of the family over and I have to get the house ready, do the cooking, get the kids dressed and make sure everything looks festive.  You know how that is."
Mary looked tenderly at the woman and said, "You are a very good mother.  You obviously love your children very much.  If you would allow me, I would like to give you a gift."
The woman was quite surprised and said, "You want to give me a gift?  That is such a sweet gesture."
Mary handed her a very small jewelry box with a single bow on top.  The woman carefully opened the box and saw a heart necklace. Underneath the necklace was a slip of gold paper that said, "This Christmas, let your heart be filled with the mystery of the Incarnation.  God became man for you."
As the woman read the words she unsuccessfully tried to hide her confusion.  For the first time in her life, she had no words.  Finally she looked at Mary and said, "I'm sorry, but I don't understand."
Mary replied, "I know you don't.  But if you spent your time praying about the Incarnation, and then shared that gift with your children, it would be the most valuable present you could ever give them.  Merry Christmas, Cheryl."  Then Mary stood up and walked away.
Cheryl sat in silence and stared at the little piece of paper.  A few moments went by as she tried to remember the entire conversation.  Her eyes grew wide as she thought.  She said, "Merry Christmas Cheryl."  How did she know my name?  Cheryl  looked around expecting to see the woman a little way down the path, but she was no where in sight.  Cheryl took out her smart phone and googled the word "Incarnation".

The Road Less Traveled: Fourth Encounter

(This fictional Advent story began on post Nov 28, 2016.)

After several hours of traveling, Mary and Joseph decided to look for a place to stay for the night before they lost the light of day.  Although Mary never complained, Joseph could see how uncomfortable this trip was for her.  His concern grew that perhaps this trip would put her or their precious baby's health in danger.  They came to a house on top of a hill and requested lodging for the night.
A man answered the door saying, "I'm sorry I do not have any room available.  I have relatives traveling as well and they just arrived this morning.  Try the house at the end of the hill.  I don't know if you will have any luck, she just had a baby two weeks back."
Joseph thanked the man and he and Mary continued down the hill.  As Joseph and Mary approached the house a young man suddenly appeared.  Joseph smiled, "Excuse me, my wife and I have been traveling all day, and we are in need of a place to stay for the night.  Could you kindly allow us a small space?"
The man shook his head back and forth and was about to say "no" when he noticed Mary's condition.  "She's not in labor is she?"
"No." Joseph replied.  "She is just worn from the trip."
"That's good, because one crying baby is more than we can handle right now.  My wife delivered over two weeks ago.  She had some problems and the baby doesn't feed well.  The baby cries nonstop.  You can stay here if you want, but I doubt you will get any rest."
Joseph looked at Mary and Mary said, "Joseph, I really could use a rest from traveling." Then she looked at the man and said, "Sir if you would allow me, I would like to assist your wife in any way that I can."
The man nodded and lead Joseph and Mary inside his home.  As soon as the door was opened the sound of a baby crying echoed all around them.  "Ruth, we are going to have two visitors staying the night.".   A woman a few years older than Mary appeared with a crying baby and a toddler wrapped around her leg. She had dark circles under her eyes as if she hadn't slept in days.  The woman said something to her husband, but the cries of the baby got louder and drowned out her meek voice.
Mary took a few steps forward towards Ruth.  "Would you allow me the honor of holding your beautiful child?"
Ruth looked at her husband.  "Go ahead and let her.  It's not as if the child can cry any more than it already is."  Reluctantly, Ruth placed the child in Mary's arms.

Mary saw a chair and sat down allowing the baby to partially rest on her pregnant abdomen and whispered something in the baby's ear.  As soon as the baby touched her body,  the child stopped crying.  Mary softly hummed a familiar psalm, and the baby lovingly looked at Mary.
Ruth sat down next to Mary and said, "How did you get her to stop crying?"
Mary smiled and said, "I asked her if she wanted to join me in praising the Lord."
"I have been so exhausted,  and I have tried everything.  I never would of thought to ask her to pray with me.  She's too young to even know what prayer is."
Mary smiled and said, "When our words are not adequate, God, himself, will supply the words. It is an awesome privilege to teach a child to love the Lord."  Mary continued to sing her psalm and meditate in prayer as the baby peacefully drifted off to sleep. When Mary finished praying, she looked at Ruth and saw that both her eyes and her toddler's were closed as well, so she continued to softly sing.
Ruth's husband had stepped outside with Joseph to attend to the donkey. When he came back inside and saw his family sleeping, he was pleasantly surprised. He looked at Joseph and said, "Your wife has brought peace to my whole family. How is this possible?"
Joseph recognized the psalm Mary was singing and the love in her eyes.  He looked at the man and said, "She is praying. She has asked God to bless your family.  It has been my experience, that I feel closer to God when I join my prayers with Mary."  Joseph looked at the man and then the future's horizon and said,  "I would encourage you to pray with her well."

The Road Less Traveled: Third Encounter

(This fictional Advent story began on post dated 11-28-16)

Joseph helped Mary get back on the donkey as they continued their journey towards Bethlehem.  "It seemed to me you made quite an impression on that woman back there.  What were you talking about?" inquired Joseph.
"One of my favorite subjects, prayer.  I just shared how important prayer was in my life.  I told her how we made prayer a priority in our lives, and how important it is for a husband and wife to pray together.  I told her how blessed I was to have such a holy man as my husband."
Joseph turned back to see Mary smiling at him.  He blushed at such a generous compliment.  "Well I hope you told her that it was actually I who was blessed with such a devout spouse.  I really have no idea what I ever did to deserve having you as my wife."  Joseph stopped walking and leaned up against the donkey and Mary's side.  He looked up at Mary's face and said, "You have no idea how much I thank God every day for the gift of you and our soon to be son." Joseph turned his head into Mary’s side so that she would not see the tear of joy and love slide down his cheek.  As he gently pressed his face against her abdomen, he unexpectedly felt a kick.  "Mary, did you feel the baby just kick?"
Mary smiled and said, "I think we both did that time.  I think our son enjoys the sound of your voice and how much you love us both."
"Mary, sometimes I am completely overwhelmed when I think how you will give birth to the Messiah.  What do you think he will be like?  Do you think he will be just like other babies or will he know everything and just start talking to us?"
Mary laughed and slid off the donkey.  "Well I hope he doesn't start talking the minute he is born.  How could we possibly explain that to others?"  Mary took Joseph's hand in hers and said,” I wonder what he will be like as well.  It's exciting, isn't it?"
"Did the angel tell you if people will know he is the Messiah?"
"How and when people will know was not revealed to me.  I'm sure in time, God will let us know.  Joseph, don't worry.  I know you will be an amazing father."
"Just promise me one thing, Mary."
  "What?"
"Please don't have this baby while we are traveling.  I honestly don't know if I would be of any help."
"Joseph, I wish I could make that promise.  I get nervous, too, sometimes, but I close my eyes and I feel God's love inside my growing more each day, and I am filled with such joy.  Joseph, I think when his birth occurs it will be amazing."
Joseph looked at Mary with so much love that he felt his heart could not contain all the love he felt for her.  Again, he silently asked God what he ever did to deserve to have Mary as his wife?

The Road Less Traveled: Second Encounter

(This Advent story began on the post dated Nov 28, 2016)

Mary and Joseph awoke early the next morning and began their trip towards Bethlehem.  Joseph felt fortunate that they owned a donkey and Mary would not have to walk the entire way.  However, Joseph could tell that riding the donkey was not a comfortable situation for Mary.  Although she did not complain, Mary often requested that they stop and rest a minute as she rubbed her back.
"Well Joseph, I think it is your turn to ride the donkey," Mary said jokingly.
"Oh, you think I'm going to sit on this poor tired donkey while my pregnant wife wattles alongside?  I don't think you would be able to keep up with us," Joseph said teasingly as he flashed Mary a smile.
Mary started laughing.  She really enjoyed Joseph's playful sense of humor.  He was going to be a very good father.  He was loving and kind, generous and good natured, and He had a heart of gold.  "Well you and the donkey will have to forgive me for being so slow these days," Mary said with a smile.
"I will forgive you in a heartbeat, but I'm not so sure about our friend, Donkey.  He can be quite stubborn sometimes."  Again, Mary smiled at Joseph.  "Tell you what I think we should do.  Why don't we both walk together and give Donkey a rest.  I believe there is a small town coming up soon and we can stop and have lunch.  Maybe if you rested for a little bit your back will stop hurting."
Mary nodded her head in agreement, "I think that sounds like a good idea."
When they reached the small town, Joseph knocked at the first house and asked where he might find some water and a place for Mary to rest.  The man who answered the door looked at Joseph and then Mary.  He couldn't help but notice the young woman was with child.  He very politely invited Mary inside his home and then showed Joseph where he could get some water for the donkey.  While Joseph was gone, Mary quietly sat down on an empty seat and closed her eyes for a few moments.  Suddenly she was startled when a pot fell and an older woman emerged mumbling to herself and carrying a loaf of bread.
"My husband told me to offer you some bread.  I'm surprised you would be traveling when you are so far along.  You're pretty young, too.  Don't you know any better?" the woman rudely asked.
Mary politely accepted the bread that was offered to her.  "Thank you for your kind hospitality.  My husband and I are traveling to Bethlehem because of the Roman census."
"There are a lot of people traveling these days, thanks to Caesar.  As if Rome isn't already taking enough of our money for taxes, now they want a census taken, for what?  More taxes and more money?  Travelers just keep coming by and I'm just expected to give out what little food and drink we have," the woman sighed very loudly and then mumbled under her breath.  The woman was obviously not very happy.
"Again, I thank you for your kindness.  I shall keep you in my prayers today and ask God to bless you for your generosity."
The woman stopped for a moment and looked at Mary.  "You keep praying, because I have just about given up.  All my life I have prayed for the Messiah to come and save us.  And yet here we are, day after day, subjected to the Romans and burdened by their taxes and selfish leaders.  Why has God not heard our cries?"
Mary compassionately look at this woman.  It appeared that this woman had let her faith wear thin as the troubles in her life increased.  Her hope was gone. Her eyes blind to God's love around her.  Cautiously, Mary continued the conversation.  "I am young, and certainly not as wise to the ways of the world as you are, but I pray every day, and I do believe God hears our cries.  My prayers seek out God's love.  I, too, pray for the Messiah to come, but not to be a governing leader, but to lead my heart toward salvation.  I would like to see changes, too.....but I don't think a government can bring about the changes I desire.  I think the power of change resides in our own hearts.  I try to live as if the Messiah was already in our midst.  What if you found the Messiah to be your neighbor, would you conduct yourself differently?
We are all capable of changing this world we live in.  We can change our attitudes.  We can change how we speak to each other.  We can change how generous we are with one another.  We can change how we love one another.  Those are changes each of us are capable of making, and those changes could change our world.  It's a choice really.  You can live as if nothing you do matters, or you can live and truly believe that everything you do will be for the coming of the Kingdom of the Messiah.  Perhaps, only a few have power here on earth, but I think in God's Kingdom the power will reside in each and every heart faithful to God's covenant.  Love can be very powerful."
The woman looked thoughtfully at Mary, surprised and touched by her words.  "Your wisdom is greater than your years, but how powerful can one heart be?  Can it fight an army?"
"It is my prayer that one day we will all realize how much God loves us.  When we learn to love as God does, there will be no need for armies.  A heart filled with love desires peace,  and has no desire to allow power or jealousy to take root.  Jealousy is the seed of the Evil One.  We may not even notice it growing until it's roots begin to choke us and cut us off from the springs of everlasting love inside of us.  I try very hard to guard my heart from jealousy, and the riches and power of this world."
The two woman continued to talk and eat. Mary spoke about the joy she experienced while praying, and the woman listened very carefully to all that Mary shared with her.  Twenty minutes later,  Joseph and the woman's husband returned.  Joseph looked at Mary and said,  "How are you feeling?"
"I am feeling better.  We have been blessed to have found such gracious hosts along our travels."  Mary looked at the woman and said,  "I am grateful for your kindness.  I will pray that God brings blessings to this house."
The woman looked at Mary and said, "I feel as if God, himself, already blessed us, the moment He brought you to our door.  Please, keep us in your prayers and I will keep you in mine as well.  You were hungry and I fed you with some bread, but you have fed me with your faith, and I didn't even realize I was starving. I feel that God is very near to you. I will pray for my heart to be changed as well."
  Mary smiled.
"Shall we continue our journey, Mary?" Joseph inquired.
"Yes, I am ready," Mary replied, and then asked, "Are you?"

The Road Less Traveled

"Mary, please lay down and rest for awhile before we begin our trip.  I'm worried about you and the baby.  The trip will be very hard on you.  Are you sure we are doing the right thing?  Bethlehem is going to take at least four days of continuos walking.  I'm just not sure...," Joseph stopped mid sentence as he shook his head.  He was very worried about Mary and about the baby.  Everyone said she looked as if it could be very soon.  The last thing he wanted to do was a long trip to Bethlehem.  What if Mary went into labor somewhere along the road?  What if he was the only one to help deliver the baby?  Of course their neighbor Leah had explained to Joseph in detail yesterday what he should do, but honestly, he wasn't sure if he could do it.  Why would the Romans insist on this decree right before the baby was to be born?
"Joseph, please, do not worry.  I will rest as you have suggested.  We will put our trust in God.  Everything will work according to His Plan.  The Messiah will come at God's desired time," Mary smiled lovingly at Joseph.  Her radiance took Joseph's breath away along with his worries. "Remember, Joseph, The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack, " again Mary smiled a she gestured at Joseph to pray with her.
Together they prayed in unison, "In green pastures you let me graze; to safe waters you lead me; you restore my strength.  You guide me along the right path for the sake of your name.  Even when I walk through dark valley, I fear no harm for you are at my side; your rod and staff give me courage.  You set a table before me as my enemies watch; You annoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.  Only goodness and love will pursue me all the days of my life; I will dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come."
Mary looked at Joseph and then towards the future and said, "Let each of us pray for God's strength and His mercy as we begin this journey together."

Advent Begins

Advent is a time of anticipation, reflection, and joy.  We prepare for the birth of The Messiah.  "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life" (John 3:16).  We should spend these next four weeks remembering how Jesus became a small baby, just for us.  Advent is a special time where past, present and future coincide for a treasure of blessings for us. As we reflect on the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, in our hearts, and when Jesus will come again.
I'm going to ask a huge favor from everyone.  Please let this be a time of spiritual wonder and joy.  Listen to the very voice of God this season as He shares His Son with us.  I know it is difficult, but do your very best to turn away the marketing of the world.  The gifts that God has always intended to share with us, have nothing to do with what can be bought in a store.  In fact Jesus, himself, said, "Go and sell what you have, and give it to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me" (Mark 10:21).  This Advent season turn your ear to God, Hear His voice, and rejoice in His promises.
Theresa and I will beginning a new series of stories called "The Path Less Traveled."  It is a collection of fictional stories based on Mary and Joseph's journey to bring Christ to the world.  Like Advent, the stories will occur at a time where past, present, and future coincide and celebrate the coming of the Messiah.  We hope that you will choose to be a part of "The Path Less Traveled."

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Today as we gather with family and friends, let us thank God for placing these people in our lives.  Separately, we are all very different individuals, but we are bound and strengthened and challenged by each other and the prayers we share.  My life is far from perfect.  Sometimes I feel I've had more than my share of challenges, but I am grateful that the Lord has never left me alone.  He has blessed me with people who have stood beside me, laughed with me, cried with me, and strengthened me with their prayers.  Thank you Lord for allowing me to discover the beauty of life through all those you have chosen to place at my side.

Here's Looking at You

You know what they say--beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
What does God see when He looks at you?
